SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.

CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT LOST A VALUED MEMBER OF THE CITY OF CORONADO, AND SPECIFICALLY CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.

KATHY VIENNA SPENT DECADES WORKING WITH PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS TO HELP ENSURE THAT THEY ACHIEVED THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.

BEYOND SERVICE TO THE CLASSROOM, KATHY'S RECORD OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN CORONADO INCLUDES SERVING AS THE CORONADO SCHOOLS FOUNDATION BOARD MEMBER, SERVING ON THE CITY RECREATION COMMISSION, SERVING TWO TERMS AS A TRUSTEE ON THE CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD.

KATHY'S SERVICE AS A CUSD TRUSTEE AND BOARD PRESIDENT INCLUDED SEVERAL CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS, INCLUDING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING, THE EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTER, THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, THE CHS TENNIS COURTS, AND THE BRIAN BENT MEMORIAL AQUATIC CENTER, SOMETHING NEAR AND DEAR TO HER AS AQUATICS WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN HER FAMILY AND IN HER HOME.

KATHY VIENNA WAS A DEVOTED WIFE, MOTHER, EDUCATOR, AND LOYAL FRIEND.

I OFTEN REACHED OUT TO KATHY FOR GUIDANCE, AND SHE WAS ALWAYS GRACIOUS AND GENEROUS WITH HER TIME AND HER WISDOM.

SHE LEAVES US WITH A LEGACY OF SERVICE AND EXCELLENCE IN CORONADO AND WAS TRULY A GEM IN OUR CROWN, AND WE'D LIKE TO THANK YOU, CAPTAIN VIENNA, FOR SHARING HER WITH US.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, TO THE VIENNA FAMILY.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE ANTRIM.

THIS ONE'S FOR YOU. YOU CAN HAVE THAT AFTER.

ALL THESE FUN THINGS. LAURA HILL LAST YEAR.

[LAUGHTER] I'M ALLOWED TO DO THIS.

>> WE WERE HIRED TOGETHER.

>> YEAH. THIS IS MY PLEDGE CLASS HOME.

ON BEHALF OF THE ENTIRE ISLANDER FAMILY, I'M HONORED TO BE HERE TODAY TO RECOGNIZE THIS MAGNIFICENT, AND COMPASSIONATE EDUCATOR, NICOLE BELONG.

NICOLE BEGAN TEACHING IN CUSD IN 2003, AND HAS BEEN A DYNAMIC AND INSPIRING SCIENCE TEACHER AND ASP ADVISOR TO EVERY ONE OF HER STUDENTS FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS.

IF EVER THERE HAS BEEN SOMEONE TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON A SCHOOL CAMPUS AND ITS CULTURE, IT CERTAINLY NICOLE BELONG.

THIS RECOGNITION IS A TRUE TESTAMENT TO THE PASSION, HARD WORK, AND COMMITMENT SHE HAS TO HER STUDENTS AND TO OUR ENTIRE ISLANDER FAMILY.

NICOLE IS NOT ONLY AN EXCEPTIONAL TEACHER, SHE'S ALSO A WARM, DEDICATED, EMPATHETIC PERSON WHO TRULY LOVES THIS COMMUNITY.

CULTIVATING A POSITIVE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS IS HER PRIORITY.

IN HER ASP AND SCIENCE CLASSES, SHE FOSTERS AN ENVIRONMENT OF SAFETY AND COLLABORATION, PRIORITIZING NOT ONLY ACADEMIC CONTENT, BUT ALSO TEAMWORK AND ADVOCACY.

NICOLE ENSURES THAT HER CURRICULUM IS ACCESSIBLE AND RELEVANT TO ALL LEARNERS, INFUSING HER DELIVERY, WHICH IS A POSITIVE AND NON-JUDGMENTAL APPROACH THAT RESONATES WITH HER STUDENTS.

BEYOND THIS, NICOLE EMBODIES ENTHUSIASM, A SPIRIT COUPLED WITH AN ABILITY TO EMPOWER OTHERS.

SHE'S A GENUINE AND TRUE ROLE MODEL AND A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION TO SO MANY OF OUR ISLANDERS.

FELLOW STAFF MEMBERS AND FRIENDS RAVE ABOUT NICOLE, AND RIGHTLY SO.

CHRIS COLLINS TOUTS NICOLE'S BOUNDLESS ENERGY, CARING HEART, AND ABILITY TO DIFFERENTIATE HER TEACHING SO STUDENTS CAN MAKE REAL WORLD CONNECTIONS.

MARIA GUTIER HAS EXPRESSED THAT NICOLE BELONGS AT CHS, NAMING HER AS FAMILY, AND THE DEFINITION OF AWESOME.

HONORING THE MAGIC THAT SHE SO EFFORTLESSLY GENERATES WITHIN THE FOUR WALLS OF ROOM 702.

[00:10:02]

OTHERS NOTICE THAT SHE PURELY TEACHES STUDENTS THE POWER OF HER PRESENCE BY BEING AN AMAZING TEACHER, AND HUMAN, WHO MAKES A HUGE IMPACT, CHEERFUL AND POSITIVE IN HER MULTIPLE ROLES ON CAMPUS, GIVING STUDENTS THE GRACE AND CONFIDENCE TO BE THEMSELVES.

HER FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE, LAURA HILL, THANKS NICOLE FOR GIFTING HER STEEL TRAP SMARTS, SPARKLY SMILE, BOUNDLESS SCHOOL SPIRIT AND HER HOME AND HEART TO OUR ISLANDER FAMILY.

PERSONALLY, I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO KNOW NICOLE FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS.

OUR FIRST YEAR, WE WENT TO SIXTH GRADE CAMP TOGETHER.

DO YOU REMEMBER HOW FUN THAT WAS? [LAUGHTER] AS MY 2004 PLEDGE CLASS SISTER, I HAD BEEN FORTUNATE TO WATCH NICOLE POUR HER ENERGY AND PASSION INTO DEVELOPING LEADERS, CULTIVATING ISLANDER PRIDE, AND RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING STUDENT STRENGTHS, GIFTS AND TALENTS.

SHE TRULY VALUES OUR KIDS, REMINDING THEM ALWAYS THAT THEY ARE WONDERFUL INNOVATORS AND VISIONARIES.

ONE WOULD BE CHALLENGED TO FIND ANY PERSON WHO HAS NOT MADE A POSITIVE CONNECTION WITH NICOLE.

SHE'S A DYNAMIC UNDERSTANDING, GENUINELY, REALLY FUNNY, AND ALWAYS HAS A SMILE ON HER FACE.

SHE IS RESPECTED, ADMIRED, AND SINCERELY LOVED BY ALL THOSE WHO CROSS HER PATH.

NICOLE IS INCREDIBLY DESERVING OF THIS HONOR, AND THE ISLANDER FAMILY IS THRILLED TO ACKNOWLEDGE HER TIRELESS WORK TOWARDS MAKING CHS THE BEST PLACE THAT IT CAN BE AND IS.

WITH DEEP ADMIRATION, IT IS AN HONOR FOR US TO WORK ALONGSIDE A TALENTED EDUCATOR SUCH AS NICOLE BELONG, AN ADVOCATE FOR ALL STUDENTS, AND AN EXTRAORDINARY TEACHER, COLLEAGUE AND FRIEND WHO GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND IN ALL THAT SHE DOES.

THANK YOU FOR THE GIFTS YOU HAVE GIVEN AND CONTINUE TO GIVE TO CHS AND OUR ISLANDER COMMUNITY.

WE ADORE YOU NICOLE.

ON BEHALF OF THE ENTIRE ISLANDER FAMILY, WE ARE HAPPY TO RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE YOU, NICOLE BELONG AS THE 2024 CHS TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

[APPLAUSE]

>> THANK YOU. [BACKGROUND]

>> NOW I INVITE JENNY MOORE TO COME ON DOWN AND CELEBRATE OUR TEACHER OF THE YEAR FROM SILVER STRAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, JEZZELLE RENRE.

[APPLAUSE]

>> ON BEHALF OF THE VOYAGER COMMUNITY, I'M HONORED TO RECOGNIZE JEZZELLE RENRE, WHOSE PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING IS BASED ON WILLIAM ARTHUR WARD'S QUOTE THAT THE GREAT TEACHER INSPIRES AND MISSES RENRE'S GOAL IS TO INSPIRE KIDS IN EVERY LESSON, EVERY INTERACTION, AND EVERY MOMENT SPENT IN HER CLASSROOM.

IF YOU HAVE VISITED HER LEARNING SPACE, YOU HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY HER COMMITMENT TO CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERY STUDENT FEELS EMPOWERED, VALUED, AND CAPABLE OF REACHING THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL.

JEZZELLE RENRE STORY IS A QUINTESSENTIALLY CORONADO ONE.

SHE ATTENDED CORONADO SCHOOLS AS THE YOUNGEST OF FOUR SISTERS, STARTING HER JOURNEY AT THIS VERY SITE, WHEN IT WAS CROWN SCHOOL, AND THEN GRADUATING FROM CHS.

SHE EARNED HER BA AT UCSD, HER CREDENTIAL AT SCSU, AND HER MASTER'S FROM THE HIGH TECH HIGH SCHOOL OF EDUCATION.

AS A MILITARY SPOUSE TO HUSBAND STEVE, SHE HAS TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS IN VIRGINIA, PANAMA, TENNESSEE, TEXAS, FLORIDA, AND WASHINGTON DC.

IN CALIFORNIA, SHE HAS TAUGHT IN MONTEREY AND GET THIS.

AT THE VARIOUS TIMES, HER HUSBAND AND SHE HAVE BEEN TRANSFERRED BACK HERE.

SHE HAS TAUGHT AT CHRIST CHURCH, SACRED HEART, AND SILVER STRAND ONCE BEFORE.

I'M SUPER PROUD TO BE A PRINCIPAL WHO HIRED HER BACK.

AGAIN, SHE HAS DEMONSTRATED FLEXIBILITY AND

[00:15:02]

RESILIENCE ALONGSIDE HER MILITARY CONNECTED STUDENTS THROUGHOUT HER CAREER.

AS SHE SAYS, HER EXPERIENCES HAVE INCREASED HER ABILITY TO ADAPT, INNOVATE, AND FOSTER AN INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERY STUDENT CAN THRIVE.

SHE IS THE PROUD PARENT OF DAUGHTER EMMA, WHO ALSO ATTENDED CORONADO SCHOOLS, AND TEACHES HER THROUGH HER WRITING AND HER ADVENTURING OUTDOORS, AND SHE'S THE DEVOTED DAUGHTER OF GLENN AND TULA, WHO STILL LIVE HERE IN CORONADO.

AT SILVER STRAND, JEZZELLE RENRE TAUGHT THE MULTI AGE CLASS WITH HER MENTOR AND TEACHING PARTNER LINDA TRENA DURING HER FIRST ROUND.

THEN WHEN SHE RETURNED HERE IN 2019, SHE WAS ENTHUSIASTICALLY CAME ON AS OUR FIRST AND SECOND GRADE COMO CLASS TEACHER.

SHE NOW TEACHES THIRD GRADE, AND LOVES BEING A CO-TEACHER WITH HER EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST PARTNER, AS WELL AS A MEMBER OF OUR SCHOOL PSYCHE COUNSEL AND MTSS COMMITTEE.

SHE APPEARS IN HER STUDENTS EVENTS AND EXTRA CURRICULARS, AND IS A CHEERLEADER FOR THEM AS WELL ROUNDED WHOLE HUMAN BEINGS.

SHE IS ALSO KNOWN TO BE A COMPASSIONATE AND EMPATHETIC COLLEAGUE WITH HER CLASSROOM A SAFE SPACE NOT ONLY FOR STUDENTS, BUT STAFF WHERE THEY CAN BE THEIR AUTHENTIC SELVES AND FEEL SEEN AND HEARD.

REPORTS THAT SHE ALWAYS KNEW SHE WANTED TO BE A TEACHER, AND SHE FEELS DEEPLY BOTH WHEN HER STUDENTS STRUGGLE, AS WELL AS THEY TRIUMPH, AS WELL AS WHEN THEY TRIUMPH AND YOU CAN SEE HER BIG HEART RIGHT NOW.

HER TEACHER'S HEART IS HUGE AND WE'RE SO GRATEFUL THAT IT AND SHE ARE PART OF THE VOYAGER CREW ENCOURAGING AND INSPIRING US ALL OF US EVERY DAY.

CONGRATULATIONS.

[APPLAUSE]

>> NEXT UP, I'LL INVITE PETE FOR OUR VILLAGE ELEMENTARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR, KELLY FORTSON.

[APPLAUSE]

>> BOARD, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.

IT IS WITH IMMENSE PRIDE AND GRATITUDE THAT I STAND BEFORE YOU TODAY TO CELEBRATE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR ESTEEMED READING INTERVENTIONIST, KELLY FORTSON, WHO IS OUR VILLAGE TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

AT THE HEART OF EVERY SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL, THERE ARE DEDICATED TEACHERS AND STAFF WHO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO INSTILL THE LOVE OF LEARNING IN OUR STUDENTS.

KELLY EXEMPLIFIES THE SPIRIT WITH HER DECADES OF UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO HELPING EVERY CHILD REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.

KELLY HAS TAUGHT AT VILLAGE FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

SHE'S TAUGHT KINDERGARTEN, FIRST GRADE AND SUCCESSFULLY READ OUR READING INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.

SHE HAS SERVED ON VIRTUALLY EVERY COMMITTEE IN HER TENURE HERE AT VILLAGE AND CURRENTLY LEADS ARE ANCHORED FOR LIFE PROGRAM.

AS A READING INTERVENTIONIST THAT SERVES THE ENTIRE SCHOOL, SHE HAS NOT ONLY TRANSFORMED THE LIVES OF COUNTLESS STUDENTS, BUT ALSO HAS INSTILLED IN THEM A LIFELONG LOVE FOR READING AND LEARNING.

HER TIRELESS DEDICATION, CREATIVITY, AND PASSION HAVE CREATED RIPPLE EFFECTS IN HER STUDENTS THAT WILL RESONATE FOR YEARS TO COME.

BEYOND HER INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS, KELLY EMBODIES THE COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT THAT DEFINES OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY.

KELLY CAN OFTEN BE SEEN AT THE FRONT GATE WELCOMING IN OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS AND USING HER LUNCH BREAK TO HELP IN THE CAFETERIA.

SHE GOES OUT OF HER WAY TO HELP PROVIDE MORE INDIVIDUALIZED SUPPORTS AND MENTOR TEACHERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO GROW IN THEIR PRACTICE.

KELLY'S COLLEAGUES DESCRIBE HER AS INSIGHTFUL, THOUGHTFUL, CARING, TRUSTED AND HAVING A GREAT BE PORT WITH STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.

I WANT TO END WITH AN EXAMPLE THAT I THINK SUMMARIZES WHY KELLY IS SUCH AN EVALUED MEMBER OF THE VILLAGE TEAM.

IN THE DAYS THAT FOLLOWED THE FLOOD ON OUR CAMPUS, THERE WAS UNCERTAINTY, STRESS, AND HEIGHTENED EMOTIONS TO SAY THE LEAST.

DO THE NATURE OF KELLY'S POSITION, I PROBABLY HAD TO MOVE HER LOCATION AROUND A DOZEN TIMES AS WE GOT ALL OF OUR SPACES BACK ONLINE.

THROUGH ALL OF THIS, KELLY SHOWED REMARKABLE GRACE,

[00:20:03]

FLEXIBILITY, AND A SOLUTIONS ORIENTED APPROACH.

SHE ALWAYS ENDED OUR CONVERSATION WITH WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP.

KELLY, YOUR IMPACT EXTENDS FAR BEYOND OUR CLASSROOM WALLS.

YOU ARE NOT ONLY A TEACHER BUT A MENTOR, A ROLE MODEL, AND A BRIGHT SPOT FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

ON BEHALF OF THE SCHOOL, I EXTEND MY HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS AND GRATITUDE FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS.

MAY YOUR PASSION FOR TEACHING CONTINUE TO INSPIRE AS WE WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR EVERY CHILD WHO WALKS THROUGH OUR DOORS.

THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS.

[APPLAUSE] [BACKGROUND]

>> LASTLY, I'M GOING TO INVITE BROOK FLORA TO DO OUR CORONADO MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER OF THE YEAR, BUT ALSO OUR DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR, LINDA COLEMAN.

[APPLAUSE]

>> GOOD EVENING. THIS AFTERNOON, MS. COLEMAN STOPPED BY MY OFFICE AND SAID NOTHING EMBARRASSING.

[LAUGHTER] I DON'T THINK SO.

I'M SO PROUD TO RECOGNIZE LINDA COLEMAN AS CMS TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND CUSD DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

LINDA HAS BEEN TEACHING AT CORONADO MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR 31 YEARS AND IS CURRENTLY TEACHING ELEMENTARY MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR, PERFORMING ARTS WHEEL, ADVANCED PERFORMING ARTS AND AN ACADEMIC LAB CLASS.

LINDA IS ALSO A NATIVE CORONADO ISLANDER AND PRODUCT OF CORONADO UNIFIED ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL.

LINDA IS A KIND, TRUSTWORTHY AND NURTURING TEACHING PROFESSIONAL.

LINDA TRULY WANTS WHAT IS BEST FOR THE STUDENTS AND HER CARE AND THE ADULT SHE WORKS WITH EACH DAY.

SHE HAS GIVEN THE STUDENTS OF CORONADO A LOVE FOR MUSIC, AND THE STUDENTS HAVE SHARED THEIR LOVE WITH THIS CITY AS THEY PERFORM AT MANY EVENTS AROUND THE ISLAND.

I CAN GUARANTEE YOU THAT IF THERE'S AN EVENT HAPPENING AT OR NEAR CMS, YOU'LL FIND LINDA AND HER GROUPS PERFORMING.

LINDA BRINGS MUSIC ALIVE AND MAKES IT RELEVANT TO STUDENTS EVERYDAY LIVES.

SHE EQUIPS HER STUDENTS FOR LIFE BEYOND HER CLASSROOM.

EACH YEAR, SHE PREPARES EIGHTH GRADERS TO AUDITION FOR COSA, AND SHE HAS A VERY HIGH ACCEPTANCE RATE.

LINDA WORKS WITH STUDENTS IN GRADES 2-8 AT THREE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS.

SHE ENGAGES HER STUDENTS WITH SONG, DANCE, INSTRUMENTS, AND MOVEMENT.

AT EACH LEVEL, SHE'S MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH STUDENTS BY HELPING THEM DISCOVER THEIR MUSICAL TASTE AND SOME THEIR TRUE PASSION FOR MUSIC AND THE ARTS.

ARE YOU READY? OVER THE PAST 31 YEARS, LINDA HAS TAUGHT THE FOLLOWING; FIFTH GRADE, ELEMENTARY CHOIR, MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR, HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR, DRAMA, TEEN ISSUES, STUDY SKILLS, NEWSPAPER, YEARBOOK, I'M NOT DONE.

KCMS, SIXTH GRADE HUMANITIES, WHEEL, INTERMEDIATE PERFORMING ARTS, ADVANCED PERFORMING ARTS, ACADEMIC LAB, AND JUST IN CASE THAT'S NOT ENOUGH.

SHE TAUGHT INTRO TO KINDERGARTEN, ENGINEERING, AND DRAMA AT SUMMER SCHOOL.

EACH YEAR, LINDA'S ADVANCED PERFORMING ARTS STUDENTS PUT ON A SPRING MUSICAL, WHICH IS ALWAYS ENJOYED BY ALL.

SHE ALSO HAS A KNACK FOR TALKING STAFF MEMBERS INTO MAKING CAMEO APPEARANCES.

IN FACT, I EVEN REMEMBER A FORMER PRINCIPAL PLAYING THE ROLE OF DADDY WARBUCKS AND ANNIE.

NOT THAT LONG AGO, A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER WAS AN UPA LUPA.

[LAUGHTER] LAST YEAR, LINDA FORMED A STUDENT CLUB CALLED BLANKETS FOR LOVE.

SHE WROTE A GRANT AND WAS ABLE TO GET ALL THE EXPENSES FOR THE CLUB COVERED.

LINDA TAUGHT THE STUDENTS HOW TO MAKE THESE BLANKETS, AND IN FACT, I HAVE A BLANKET OF MY OWN IN TRITON COLORS THAT I USE DAILY.

THE BLANKETS STUDENTS MADE HAD BEEN GIVEN TO THE RETIREMENT CENTER IN

[00:25:02]

CORONADO AS HOLIDAY GIFTS AND TO PAUSE OF CORONADO.

NOW THAT YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT LINDA'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS, I'D LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT TO REFLECT ON THE LINDA I KNOW.

THE LINDA I KNOW SAT AT THE INTERVIEW TABLE WHEN I WAS HIRED 18 YEARS AGO.

LINDA I HELPED ME LEARN HOW TO TAKE STUDENTS ON FIELD TRIPS.

ON MY FIRST FIELD TRIP, WHICH WAS TO DISNEYLAND FOR A COMPETITION WITH THE BAND ENQUIRER.

THE LINDA I KNOW TRAVELED ON ONE BUS, WELL, I WAS ON THE OTHER.

BEFORE WE WERE EVEN OFF THE ISLAND, SHE SENDS ME A TEXT THAT SIMPLY SAYS, BUS HIT BY CAR.

I'LL SAVE THE FULL STORY FOR ANOTHER TIME.

THE LINDA I KNOW VOLUNTEERED TO MANAGE MY WEDDING CEREMONY ON THE DAY OF SO THAT I DIDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT.

THE LINDA I KNOW WAS ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE TO COME CHECK ON ME WHEN I HAD MY FIRST BABY.

I THINK IT WAS PROBABLY FOR SNUGGLES, BUT I'LL SAY IT WAS FOR ME.

THE LINDA I KNOW HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN HER HEART FOR FIREMEN.

[LAUGHTER] THAT'S SO EMBARRASSING IT'S THE TRUTH.

THE LINDA I KNOW TURNS INTO SUPERWOMAN WHEN THERE'S A FLOOD AT YOUR SCHOOL.

THE LINDA I KNOW TAKES A BUS LOAD OF STUDENTS ON COLEMAN CULTURAL EVENTS ON SATURDAYS, SO THEY CAN GO TO LOS ANGELES TO SEE BROADWAY MUSICALS.

I'VE TAGGED ALONG ON A FEW OF THOSE.

THE LINDA I KNOW LOVE SHARING HER PASSION AND MUSIC TO HER STUDENTS, SO MUCH SO THAT SHE PURPOSELY TAKES MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ON AN OVERNIGHT FIELD TRIP.

THE LINDA I KNOW WOULD GIVE YOU THE SHIRT OFF HER BACK WHEN YOU'RE IN NEED.

I GUESS MY POINT IS THAT THE LINDA I KNOW ISN'T JUST A GREAT TEACHER, SHE'S A GREAT PERSON.

ONE OF LINDA'S COLLEAGUES SAYS IT BEST.

EVERYONE KNOWS THAT IF YOU NEED AN EAR TO LISTEN AND A FRIEND TO COUNT ON, LINDA IS WHO YOU GO LOOKING FOR TO HELP.

LINDA IS LOVED BY STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND STAFF ALIKE.

LINDA, THANK YOU FOR YOUR MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO CUSD AND CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING NAMED CMS TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND CUSD DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

[APPLAUSE] I'M SO GLAD I'M THE ONE WHO GOT TO DO THAT.

[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE]

>> ACTUALLY, WE ARE PROUD TO SAY THAT LINDA WILL BE REPRESENTING CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE COMPETITION FOR COUNTYWIDE TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

SHE HAS JUST DONE ALL THE WORK TO COMPLETE THAT AND SEND IT IN, SO WE'RE EXCITED AND WE WISH HER WELL.

>> WOULD THE FOUR TEACHERS OF THE YEAR AND THEIR PRINCIPALS, PLEASE COME UP FRONT FOR A GROUP SHOT? AS THEY MAKE THEIR WAY UP, FUN FACT JEZZELLE RENRE AND LINDA COLEMAN WERE CLASSMATES AND GRADUATED TOGETHER FROM CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL.

I WASN'T GOING TO SAY THE YEAR, MS. COLEMAN.

>> DO YOU WANT TO DO A LITTLE ABOUT WHY THEY ARE HERE?

[00:30:21]

>> ITEM 2.5, SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD.

[2.5 Spotlight Presentation: Month of the Military Child]

AS MANY OF YOU PROBABLY KNOW, APRIL IS MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD, SO I ASKED THAT A COUPLE OF GROUPS FROM OUR DISTRICT THAT SPOTLIGHT OUR MILITARY STUDENTS COME IN AND PRESENT TO US.

MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD, AS YOU CAN SEE, THE COLOR IS PURPLE.

SOME OF US HAVE WORN IT UP HERE TODAY.

PURPLE IS A MESH OF THE COLORS OF ALL THE DIFFERENT SERVICE BRANCHES, AND THAT'S WHY THAT COLOR WAS CHOSEN TO REPRESENT MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD AND THE FLOWER IS THE DANDELION BECAUSE THE PLANT PUTS DOWN ROOTS ALMOST ANYWHERE, AND IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DESTROY.

IT'S AN UNPRETENTIOUS PLANT. I LOST MY SPOT.

GOOD LOOKING. IT'S A SURVIVOR IN A BROAD RANGE OF CLIMATES.

MILITARY CHILDREN BLOOM EVERYWHERE THE WINDS CARRY THEM.

THEY ARE HARDY AND UPRIGHT.

THEIR ROOTS ARE STRONG, CULTIVATED DEEPLY IN THE CULTURE OF THE MILITARY, PLANTED SWIFTLY AND SURELY.

THEY'RE READY TO FLY IN THE BREEZES THAT TAKE THEM TO NEW ADVENTURES, NEW LANDS, AND NEW FRIENDS.

WITH THAT, I'D LIKE TO CALL UP MISS KELLY FORTSON WHO RUNS OUR ANCHORED FOR LIFE PROGRAM.

>> THANK YOU MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.

I AM KELLY FORTSON, THE READING SPECIALIST AND ANCHORED FOR LIFE ADVISOR AT VILLAGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

I'M HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT OUR VILLAGE ANCHORED FOR LIFE CLUB.

BEING AN ANCHORED FOR LIFE ADVISOR IS VERY NEAR AND DEAR TO ME AS I AM A MILITARY BRAT, A MILITARY SPOUSE, AND A MILITARY MOM.

YOU CAN SAY I DON'T LIKE DOING THIS, SO I'M GOING TO TRY AND MAKE IT THROUGH THIS.

I'M SETTING A GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR MY GIRLS HERE.

ANYWAY, ANCHORED FOR LIFE IS A PEER TO PEER CLUB THAT PROVIDES LEADERSHIP AND CHARACTER BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP CONNECT OUR STUDENTS TO THEIR COMMUNITY DURING DIFFICULT TRANSITIONS WHILE HELPING THEM BUILD RESILIENCY SKILLS.

AS THE ANCHORED FOR LIFE ADVISOR, I COLLABORATE WITH THE FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE TEAM LEADERS DURING OUR MONTHLY STUDENT LED MEETINGS.

I FACILITATE THE MEETING AS TEAM LEADERS PLAN SERVICE PROJECTS, TOURS, DISTRIBUTION OF KITS, AND QUOTES.

THE CLUB FEATURES PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEERS TO ENHANCE SOCIAL SKILLS, LEARN LEADERSHIP SKILLS, BUILD CHARACTER, IMPROVE SELF ESTEEM AND INTEGRATE INTO THEIR COMMUNITY.

OUR TEAM LEADERS CREATE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT QUOTES THAT PROVIDE INSPIRING MESSAGES TO INCREASE POSITIVE INTERACTIONS AMONG ALL OF OUR VILLAGE STUDENTS.

THE TEAM LEADERS PERSONALLY MEET WITH STUDENTS DURING CHALLENGING LIFE EVENTS AND GO OVER THE CONTENTS OF ANCHORED FOR LIFE KITS THAT PROVIDE RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS.

THE KITS ARE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHEN THEIR PARENT OR GUARDIAN IS DEPLOYED OR RETURNING FROM DEPLOYMENT, AND TO STUDENTS WHO ARE NEW TO OUR SCHOOL OR MOVING AWAY.

TOURS ARE GIVEN BY OUR TEAM LEADERS TO NEW STUDENTS HELPING TO FAMILIARIZE THESE TRANSITIONING STUDENTS WITH OUR VILLAGE CAMPUS.

FURTHERMORE, OUR TEAM LEADERS INTRODUCE THE NEW STUDENTS TO THEIR K5 CLASSROOM CREW MEMBER AS AN ADDITIONAL ANCHOR FOR SUPPORT.

LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR, I'M EXCITED TO BEGIN IMPLEMENTING OUR ACTIVITY GROUPS.

THE ACTIVITY GROUPS HAVE A SPECIALLY DESIGNED LIFE SKILL CURRICULUM THAT FOSTERS PEER LED SUPPORT THAT I PLAN TO INCORPORATE INTO OUR DAILY SCHOOLWIDE LEADER IN ME CURRICULUM.

AT THIS TIME, I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO INTRODUCE TWO OF OUR FIFTH GRADE TEAM LEADERS TO TALK ABOUT THEIR ANCHORED FOR LIFE EXPERIENCE.

I HAVE EMMA BAY AND I HAVE HETTY HEALY.

>> HELLO, I'M HETTY HEALY, A FIFTH GRADE ANCHORED FOR LIFE TEAM LEADER AT VILLAGE ELEMENTARY.

IN ANCHORED FOR LIFE, WE GIVE PEOPLE GIFTS AND TALK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES LIKE WHEN A PARENT DEPLOYS OR WHEN THEY ARE NEW TO VILLAGE.

THE KIT AND BEING TALKED TO MAKE THE STUDENTS FEEL SPECIAL AND WANTED.

AS A MILITARY KID MYSELF, WHEN MY DAD WAS GONE, IT WAS HARD, AND HAVING SOMEONE THAT I KNEW UNDERSTANDS ME WOULD HAVE MADE ME FEEL SO GOOD.

ESPECIALLY FROM AN OLDER STUDENT OR A PEER, WHO MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A MILITARY KID.

THE ANCHORED FOR LIFE LEADERS ALSO GET A GREAT PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT THESE STUDENTS ARE GOING THROUGH, EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT A MILITARY KID.

AS AN ANCHORED FOR LIFE TEAM LEADER, THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT STICK OUT WHEN I'M GIVING A KIT.

FIRST, HOW THE KIDS KNOW THAT THEY HAVE A FRIEND AND HOW THEY EXPLAIN WHAT THEY'RE GOING THROUGH.

I WAS NEW TO VILLAGE IN FOURTH GRADE, BUT BEFORE THAT, I CHANGED TO FOUR SCHOOLS IN FOUR YEARS.

[00:35:01]

IT WAS VERY CHALLENGING, GOING FROM ONE SCHOOL TO ANOTHER, MAKING NEW FRIENDS AND LEARNING NEW RULES.

IT WAS TOUGH, BUT HAVING A GREAT WELCOME COMMITTEE AT VILLAGE REALLY MAKES THE CHANGE SMOOTHER.

LASTLY, THE LEADERS WHO ARE IN THE PROGRAM LEARN LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND TALK WITH PEOPLE THEY MAY HAVE NOT MET BEFORE.

THE STUDENTS LOOK MORE AND MORE CONFIDENT WALKING THROUGH A TOUR OF THE SCHOOL, WALKING TALLER AND SPEAKING LOUDER TO THE PEOPLE THEY MEET.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LISTENING.

HAVE A GREAT DAY AND HAPPY MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD.

>> MINE IS MORE ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE AS AN ANCHORED FOR LIFE TEAM LEADER.

HELLO, MY NAME IS EMMA BAY.

I'M A FIFTH GRADER AT VILLAGE ELEMENTARY.

I'M ALSO AN ANCHORED FOR LIFE LEADER AND HAVE BEEN SINCE FOURTH GRADE.

ANCHORED FOR LIFE IS A VERY FUN AND HELPFUL PROGRAM.

YOU'RE ABLE TO MEET A VARIETY OF NEW PEOPLE WHILE MAKING NEW KIDS MORE HAPPY AND COMFORTABLE AT THEIR NEW SCHOOL.

IT FEELS GREAT TO BE ABLE TO HELP YOUNGER STUDENTS AND STUDENTS THE SAME AGE AS ME TO FEEL WELCOMED.

MOST OF THE TIME, WE GIVE WELCOME KITS, GOODBYE KITS, AND DEPLOYMENT KITS, BUT IT IS ALSO OUR JOB TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE FEELS INCLUDED AT VILLAGE ELEMENTARY.

THERE WAS ONE TIME A GIRL NAMED KIRA AND I GAVE A WELCOME KIT TO A GIRL NAMED SHIRA IN MISS'S TUMMINS CLASS.

SHE WAS FROM UKRAINE AND DIDN'T SPEAK ANY ENGLISH.

WE HAD TO USE AN IPAD TO TALK TO HER.

IT WAS HARD FOR US, BUT IT WAS PROBABLY MUCH HARDER FOR HER.

IN THE END, WE WERE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE THROUGH THE IPAD.

IT WAS A VERY INTERESTING LESSON THAT TAUGHT US MORE ABOUT WORKING THROUGH BARRIERS IN HUMAN COMMUNICATION.

WE EVEN FOUND WAYS TO LAUGH TOGETHER.

ANCHORED FOR LIFE HAS MADE ME A MORE RESPONSIBLE AND UNDERSTANDING PERSON.

I ALSO THINK THAT IT MAKES OUR SCHOOL A HAPPIER AND BETTER PLACE. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH, MS. FORTSON.

THANK YOU SO MUCH GIRLS FOR COMING IN AND SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCES.

YOU HELPED SO MANY STUDENTS.

I KNOW THAT MY TWO YOUNGER KIDS DID GET THE DEPLOYMENT KITS WHEN THEIR DAD WAS DEPLOYED, AND THAT MADE THEM FEEL A LOT BETTER.

THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING ON THE PROGRAM AND DOING WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

NOW WE HAVE OUR NJROTC STUDENTS.

WE HAVE KYLE KEYSER? KYLE, NO?

>> YES KYLE.

>> ADEN ANDERSON.

[APPLAUSE]

>> GOOD AFTERNOON. I'M ADEN ANDERSON.

I'M THE CEO OF NJROTC.

MY DAD'S BEEN IN THE MILITARY FOR 18 YEARS AND I'VE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO LIVE IN CORONADO FOR THE LAST NINE.

>> I'M KYLE KEYSER. I'M A SENIOR AT CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL.

I WAS FIRST SEMESTER'S COMMAND MASTER CHIEF OF ISLANDER COMPANY AND THIS YEAR I WAS THE VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM CAPTAIN.

MY DAD HAS BEEN IN THE NAVY FOR 25 YEARS, AND I MOVED TO CORONADO HIGH AT THE BEGINNING OF MY JUNIOR YEAR.

>> WE WERE INVITED HERE TODAY TO SPEAK ON OUR EXPERIENCE AS MILITARY CHILDREN IN CORONADO SCHOOL DISTRICT.

>> FIRST, WE ARE GOING TO TOUCH ON SOME GREAT ASPECTS OF WHAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS DOING TO AID US CURRENTLY.

>> OBVIOUSLY, CORONADO IS A MILITARY TOWN, 34% OF OUR STUDENT BODY IS MILITARY CHILDREN.

THERE'S A VERY LIKE MINDED COMMUNITY THAT YOU ARE PUT INTO WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE SIMILAR EXPERIENCES TO YOU, MEETING NEW PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW THOSE EXPERIENCES.

IT'S VERY EASY TO TALK TO PEOPLE, TO FIND PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY MUCH LIKE YOU AND FIND COMMUNITIES SOMEWHERE THAT YOU WILL FIT IN.

>> HOW CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL EXCELS IS THROUGH CLUBS AND STUFF LIKE NJROTC THAT ME AND HIM HAVE BEEN IN.

I'VE BEEN IN FOR ALL FOUR YEARS. IT'S REALLY HELPED ME CONNECT.

A MAJORITY OF THE ROTC CADETS ARE MILITARY CHILDREN.

THAT JUST REALLY HELPS US BOND TOGETHER AND JUST FIT IN IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU COME IN.

IT'S GREAT HAVING A FRIEND GROUP IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU MOVE TO A NEW PLACE.

THIS IS MY THIRD HIGH SCHOOL IN FOUR YEARS, I GUESS.

ROTC HAS BEEN FANTASTIC FOR ME.

BUT WITH THAT BEING SAID, THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.

>> THINGS WE THINK THAT CAN BE IMPROVED UPON.

OBVIOUSLY, COMING INTO A NEW SCHOOL DISTRICT, ESPECIALLY ONCE YOU GET TO HIGH SCHOOL, WHERE OBVIOUSLY THERE IS COMMUNITIES, IS VERY HARD TO INTEGRATE BECAUSE YOU ARE COMING FROM A COMPLETELY NEW PLACE.

YOU DON'T KNOW ANYBODY, NOBODY KNOWS YOU.

YOU'RE ESSENTIALLY AN OUTCAST.

WHERE IT IS EASY TO FIND PEOPLE, IT IS ALSO VERY HARD TO INTEGRATE WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT MILITARY KIDS BECAUSE THE LARGER POPULATION ISN'T MILITARY.

THERE IS A DEGREE OF SEPARATION.

[00:40:01]

AREAS I'VE SEEN THIS IN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN SCHOOL.

A LOT OF FRIEND GROUPS, BY THE TIME YOU GET TO HIGH SCHOOL HAVE BEEN MADE SOME OF THESE KIDS HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER SINCE KINDERGARTEN, 2ND GRADE, BY THE TIME YOU REACH HIGH SCHOOL, FINDING A FRIEND GROUP WHO'S NOT KIDS LIKE YOU WHO YOU KNOW ARE GOING TO MOVE AWAY EVENTUALLY IS VERY TOUGH.

WHEN IT COMES TO SPORTS, THE COACHES HAVEN'T SEEN YOU A LOT.

THEY DON'T KNOW HOW YOU PLAY.

A LOT OF TIMES FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN, THE KIDS WHO'VE BEEN HERE LONGER PLAY MORE, THEY'RE WELL KNOWN BY THE COACHES AND IT'S VERY HARD TO INTEGRATE YOURSELF.

>> I FEEL LIKE ONE WAY HOW THAT CAN BE IMPROVED UPON IS JUST FIGURING OUT HOW TO JUST CONNECT THESE CIVILIAN FRIEND GROUPS WITH THE MILITARY KIDS.

WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO COME UP WITH WAYS LIKE THAT. I DON'T REALLY HAVE ANYTHING.

>> THAT'S WHY NJROTC IS VERY GOOD FOR US, ESPECIALLY WITH COMMANDER NESBITT AND SENIOR CHIEF HELLWIG, THEY MAKE IT A VERY OPEN COMMUNITY OPEN TO EVERYONE, WHETHER IT BE CIVILIAN KIDS WHO WANT TO GO INTO MILITARY, CIVILIAN KIDS WHO JUST WANT A GROUP OF PEOPLE AND MILITARY KIDS WHO WANT VERY LIKE MINDED PEOPLE.

THAT IS THE PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE FOUND.

I'VE BEEN IN FOR FOUR YEARS AND I'VE DONE A LOT AND THEY ARE SOME OF THE BEST PEOPLE I HAVE MET AND THEY'RE GOING ON TO MUCH BIGGER THINGS.

IT PREPARES US GREATLY FOR THE FUTURE.

>> YES. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK HERE TODAY, AND THANK YOU, HAPPY MONTH OF MILITARY CHILD.

>> WE APPRECIATE THE INVITATION. THANK YOU.

[APPLAUSE]

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR FEEDBACK AND YOUR HONESTY.

IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER THOUGHTS THAT MIGHT COME UP OR SOLUTIONS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT TO US ON THE BOARD.

WE'D LOVE TO COME UP WITH WAYS THAT WE CAN BETTER HELP THE MILITARY CHILDREN. THANK YOU.

MOVING ON TO ITEM 3, CONSOLIDATED MOTION FOR CONSENT CALENDAR.

[3. CONSOLIDATED MOTION FOR CONSENT CALENDAR]

DO WE HAVE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON THIS ITEM? TRUSTEES, ANY COMMENTS?

>> YES, PLEASE.

I'D LIKE TO SPEAK TO ITEM, EXCUSE ME, WHERE DID IT GO? THERE IT IS 3.12, THE SCHOOL CALENDAR FOR NEXT YEAR.

AS WE RECALL, WE HAD A DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT THE BOARD HOPED TO SEE WITH THE SCHOOL CALENDAR MOVING INTO NEXT YEAR.

THE CALENDAR THAT'S BEEN PRESENTED AND TENTATIVELY AGREED TO IS NOT WHAT WE HAD EXPRESSED REALLY A DESIRE TO SEE IN TERMS OF ADVANCING THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND, AT LEAST I SPEAK FOR MYSELF, ALIGNING THE WINTER BREAK WITH AFTER FINALS, ESPECIALLY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL.

I UNDERSTAND IT FELT A LITTLE RUSHED FOR THE PARTIES THAT WERE JUST GETTING TO THE NEGOTIATING TABLE.

THE CALENDAR THAT'S BEEN PRESENTED DOES NOT REFLECT THAT CHANGE.

WE'VE GOTTEN SOME REALLY GOOD FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERS, VERY THOUGHTFUL, DETAILED SOLUTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR WAYS THAT THIS CALENDAR COULD BE IMPROVED.

THAT SAID, I KNOW OUR COMMUNITY WANTS AND NEEDS A CALENDAR.

YESTERDAY MOST SCHOOL DISTRICTS AROUND US HAVE ALREADY APPROVED THEIR CALENDARS.

I RECOGNIZE THAT IT IS VERY UNLIKELY THAT EVEN NOT APPROVING THIS OR PUTTING THIS OVER WOULD BE OF ANY REAL POSITIVE FORWARD MOVEMENT.

WITH THAT, I WOULD ASK FOR A COMMITMENT TO HAVE EARLIER IN THE YEAR NEXT YEAR OR EVEN THIS YEAR, A COMMITTEE TO REALLY STUDY THE CALENDAR IN A ROBUST WAY AND TO PUT FORWARD A MODIFIED CALENDAR AND A MULTI YEAR CALENDAR, AND WE CAN THEN APPROVE ON A ROLLING BASIS, SO FAMILIES CAN PLAN BETTER BECAUSE IT'S NOT CONVENIENT AND IT'S HARD TO KNOW AND HARD TO PLAN.

THOSE ARE MY COMMENTS AND REQUESTS AND I REALLY WANT TO THANK OUR STAKEHOLDERS THAT HAVE SENT INFORMATION AND SUGGESTIONS REGARDING THIS PROPOSED CALENDAR.

>> I'D LIKE TO ADDRESS ITEM 3.1 AND JUST TAKE A MOMENT TO THANK MR. YUCUTZ FOR HIS GENEROUS DONATION.

THAT'S ONE $1,500.

WE DON'T HAVE TO SPEND FOR TABLES, AND I'M SURE THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE PUT TO GOOD USE SO THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEES. DO WE HAVE A MOTION ON THIS CONSENT CALENDAR?

>> IS THAT THE MOTION TO APPROVE?

[00:45:02]

>> YEAH.

>> SECOND.

>> CALL FOR THE VOTE, PLEASE.

MOTION PASSES.

[4.1 Approve the Annual Declaration of Need for Highly Qualified Educators for the 2024- 2025 School Year]

ITEM 4.1 APPROVE THE ANNUAL DECLARATION OF NEED FOR HIGHLY QUALIFIED EDUCATORS FOR THE 2024, 2025 SCHOOL YEAR.

YES. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.

[LAUGHTER]

>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS PETERS.

I'D LIKE TO ASK OUR DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES, MS. DONNA TRIPI TO COME UP, THIS IS THE ANNUAL DECLARATION OF NEED FOR HIGHLY QUALIFIED EDUCATORS FOR '24 '25 SCHOOL YEAR, MS. TRIPI.

>> THE EDUCATION CODE REQUIRES THAT ALL EMPLOYEES HIRED IN CERTIFICATED POSITIONS ARE APPROPRIATELY CERTIFIED BY THE COMMISSION OF TEACHER CREDENTIALING.

IF A DISTRICT IS UNABLE TO, BLESS YOU, FIND SOMEONE FULLY CREDENTIALED.

WE MAY CONSIDER APPLICANTS WHO HAVE INTERN CREDENTIALS OR EMERGENCY CREDENTIALS, AND THAT'S WHAT THIS DECLARATION IS ABOUT.

IT'S AN ANNUAL REQUIREMENT FOR ALL DISTRICTS TO FILE THIS DECLARATION ANTICIPATING ANY NEEDS THEY THINK THEY MAY HAVE.

WE BASE OUR PREDICTION ON THE PREVIOUS YEAR'S ACTUAL NEEDS AND THEN PROJECTED NEEDS.

WE ARE ADVISED TO OVERESTIMATE THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS THAT MAY NEED EMERGENCY CREDENTIALS, MAY BE HIRED WITH EMERGENCY CREDENTIALS SO THAT WE DON'T HAVE TO REVISE THE DOCUMENT AS WE FIND A NEED.

IF YOU LOOK AT THE DECLARATION, YOU'LL SEE A COUPLE OF THE NUMBERS THAT ARE HIGH OR YOU MAY HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT 25 CLAD CREDENTIALS.

THAT NUMBER IS SO HIGH BECAUSE WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS WHEN WE HIRE OUT OF STATE TEACHERS WHO DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE A CLAD CREDENTIAL THAT'S REQUIRED IN CALIFORNIA.

THEY'RE GIVEN A YEAR TO GET THE CREDENTIAL.

THEY CAN GET AN EXTENSION IF THEY NEED IT, BUT WE OFTEN HAVE TO APPLY FOR THEM TO HAVE THAT.

THEN THE EMERGENCY TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN CREDENTIAL, THAT'S BECAUSE THAT'S AN ADD ON CERTIFICATE.

TEACHERS WITH MULTIPLE SUBJECT CERTIFICATES CAN ADD ON A TK CREDENTIAL AND SO WE GIVE THEM SOME TIME TO DO THAT.

THAT'S THE OTHER REASON.

WE ONLY HAVE THREE TK CLASSES ANTICIPATED, BUT WE PUT FIVE JUST IN THE EVENT THAT WE NEED FOUR.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS I'M HERE. SORRY.

>> ANY QUESTIONS, TRUSTEES?

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, MS. TRIPI.

>> MOVE TO APPROVE..

>> MOTION TO APPROVE BY TRUSTEE ANTRIM.

>> SECOND.

>> CALL FOR THE VOTE, PLEASE.

MOTION PASSES. WITH THAT, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A FIVE MINUTE COMFORT BREAK.

POINT 1, ACT REPORT.

[5.1 ACT Report: President Jennifer Landry]

PRESIDENT JENNIFER LANDRY.

>> GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY, KENZIE.

YOU'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE LATELY, THE BLOOD DRIVE.

YOU'RE AWESOME.

HELLO, EVERYBODY. MY NAME IS JENNIFER LANDRY.

TODAY, I'M HERE IN MY ROLE AS THE PRESIDENT OF ACT, THE ASSOCIATION OF CORONADO TEACHERS.

AS PROFESSIONAL EDUCATORS, THE MEMBERS OF ACT ARE DEEPLY COMMITTED TO THE SUCCESS OF EVERY STUDENT.

STUDENTS ARE THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING WE DO, AND WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT HAS A CARING, QUALIFIED, COMMITTED EDUCATOR.

ALTHOUGH THE WORD TEACHER IS IN OUR NAME, WE ARE ALSO SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS, SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS, COUNSELORS, AND NURSES.

TONIGHT, YOU ALREADY HEARD ABOUT TWO CHS GRADS FROM THE CLASS OF '85.

I BELIEVE THEIR MOTTO WAS STAYING ALIVE IN '85.

THEY ACCOMPLISHED THAT.

TONIGHT, I'D LIKE TO TELL YOU ABOUT ANOTHER CHS GRAD.

MATT HEINECKE IS THE BAND DIRECTOR FOR CONCERT BANDS AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL IN CORONADO UNIFIED.

THE BANDS ARE A TRADITIONAL WIND ENSEMBLE.

HE'S THE CONDUCTOR.

MATT STARTED TEACHING IN CUSD IN 2007.

DURING HIS TENURE IN CUSD, HE HAS FULFILLED THE FOLLOWING ROLES. HERE WE GO.

COSA INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC CHAIR, VILLAGE BAND DIRECTOR, ELECTRONIC MUSIC INSTRUCTOR, GUITAR CLASS INSTRUCTOR AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL,

[00:50:03]

AP MUSIC THEORY INSTRUCTOR, AND HE'S CURRENTLY THE BAND DIRECTOR FOR CHS AND CMS. THAT'S WHAT HE'S DONE SO FAR.

MATT IS A PRODUCT OF CUSD MUSIC CLASSES.

GROWING UP IN CORONADO, HE PLAYED THE SAXOPHONE IN VARIOUS BANDS.

AT CHS, HE ADDED PLAYING THE GUITAR TO HIS SKILL SET.

HE DID THIS UNDER THE TUTELAGE OF BRIAN KOHN, A NAME FAMILIAR TO SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER AS HIS PREDECESSOR AT CANYON CREST ACADEMY.

AFTER LEAVING CUSD AS A STUDENT, MATT ATTENDED USC, STUDYING JAZZ GUITAR, AND MAJORING IN MUSIC BUSINESS.

THAT PART HAS ALSO HELPED HIM SINCE MATT EVEN HAS HIS OWN BAND, NOT WITH STUDENTS.

HE EARNED HIS MASTER'S DEGREE IN MUSIC EDUCATION ALSO FROM USC.

IN THE MIDST OF HIS EDUCATION, MATT MOVED TO NASHVILLE TO PURSUE A SONGWRITING AND PERFORMING CAREER.

MATT RETURNED TO CORONADO AND WAS HIRED BY CUSD IN 2007, AND HAS BEEN HERE EVER SINCE.

MATT LIVES IN TOWN WITH HIS WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN, ONE OF WHOM IS A STUDENT OF HIS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PLAYING THE CLARINET.

RECENTLY, MATT TOOK HIS HIGH SCHOOL BAND, SUPPLEMENTED BY SEVEN MIDDLE SCHOOLERS TO THE CMEA, THAT'S THE CALIFORNIA MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION, BAND AND ORCHESTRA FESTIVAL.

HE HAS NOT ATTENDED THIS FESTIVAL SINCE BEFORE COVID.

HE AND HIS STUDENTS WENT TO LEWIS MIDDLE SCHOOL IN SAN DIEGO, AND MET UP WITH VARIOUS BANDS AND ORCHESTRAS FROM AROUND THE COUNTY.

MATT'S GROUP PLAYED THREE DIFFERENT PIECES FOR THE JUDGES.

AT THE END OF THE COMPETITION AND JUDGING PERIOD, THE ISLANDER BAND EARNED A TOP RATING OF UNANIMOUS SUPERIOR.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME UNDER MATT'S TUTELAGE, OR EVEN WHEN HE WAS A STUDENT THAT AN ISLANDER BAND HAS EARNED THIS DISTINCTION.

THE LAST TIME A CUSD BAND MAY HAVE EARNED THIS DISTINCTION WAS UNDER THE FORMER DIRECTOR BOB DEMMON BACK IN THE 80S.

BOB DEMMON, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW, WAS A BELOVED TEACHER AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, ALSO AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, LIVED RIGHT DOWN THE STREET HERE.

IF YOU EVER WANT TO FIND OUT A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT HIM, GOOGLE HIM BECAUSE YOU'LL FIND OUT THAT HE WAS ALSO, AS MATT IS A MEMBER OF A BAND WITH ADULTS, BOB WAS A MEMBER OF THE ASTRONAUTS AND THEY HAVE RECORDS, DO WE CALL THEM LPS BACK THEN? I DON'T KNOW, RECORDS THAT THEY'VE RELEASED.

IT'S REALLY NEAT TO SEE WHO THE MENTORS ARE, WHO THEY ARE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL, AND JUST LIKE MATT COULD SEE BOB AS A LEGACY, WE'RE HOPING THAT STUDENTS SEE MATT AS A LEGACY.

I THOUGHT IT WAS NEAT THAT DURING THE COMPETITION, HE COULD BRING SOME OF THOSE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS WITH HIM TO THE COMPETITION SO THEY COULD SEE MORE OF WHAT THEY HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO.

THERE'S MR. DEMMON.

I USED TO SHARE A CLASSROOM WITH MR. DEMMON.

THAT WAS AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE.

THERE WE GO. ANOTHER CHS GRAD, PRODUCT OF OUR SCHOOLS CAME BACK TO TEACH HERE.

IT'S A WONDERFUL PLACE TO BE.

I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE SOME CONCERNS WITH YOU THIS EVENING.

I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU KNOW THAT LATELY SOME MEMBERS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT THEIR POSITIONS IN THE DISTRICT ARE BEING ELIMINATED.

THESE ARE IN ADDITION TO THE POSITIONS THAT WERE ELIMINATED OFFICIALLY LAST MONTH.

THE MEMBERS IN THESE POSITIONS WILL BE MOVING OVER TO TEACH IN A GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSROOM IN THE FALL, INSTEAD OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING NOW.

WHAT THEY'RE DOING NOW IS SUPPORTING OUR STRUGGLING READERS AND OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS WITH READING INSTRUCTION IN A SMALL GROUP SETTING.

THESE ARE TARGETED SUPPORTS FOR OUR LOWEST ACHIEVING STUDENTS IN SOME CASES.

WE ARE WORRIED THAT PARENTS AREN'T BEING INFORMED OF THESE CHANGES, AND MEMBERS AT LARGE AT A SITE ARE NOT BEING INFORMED.

THEY'RE JUST HEARING ABOUT IT IF A MEMBER TELLS THEM WHAT HAS HAPPENED.

THESE CUTS WILL IMPACT EVERY CLASSROOM WHO USUALLY HAVE STUDENTS THAT RECEIVE THESE SERVICES.

WE AS THEIR TEACHERS ARE NOT BEING TOLD WHAT'S GOING TO OCCUR TO SUPPORT THESE STUDENTS IN THE FALL.

THIS IS OUR ASSUMPTION RIGHT NOW THAT THE EXTRA READING SUPPORTS ARE GOING TO FALL ON OUR PLATE.

AS YOU KNOW, THAT PLATE IS ALREADY VERY FULL,

[00:55:03]

WITH THINGS SLIDING OFF OF IT.

WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU WERE AWARE OF THESE CHANGES SO THAT YOU CAN KEEP THEM IN MIND WHEN YOU'RE VIEWING REPORTS, AND SCORES, AND ALL OF THAT IN THE FUTURE.

WE ALSO HOPE THAT PARENTS ARE TOLD THAT THEIR STUDENTS WILL BE RECEIVING LESS SUPPORTS VERY SOON, SO THAT THEY ALSO CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILD AND SUPPLEMENT THIS.

WE DO APPRECIATE THAT THE DISTRICT GRANTED AN EARLY RETIREMENT NOTIFICATION STIPEND TO ONE OF OUR MEMBERS, WHO UPON HEARING THIS DECIDED TO RETIRE, SINCE THEY TOLD HER ABOUT HER JOB BEING CUT AFTER THE RETIREMENT NOTIFICATION DEADLINE, SO WE DO APPRECIATE THAT COURTESY.

WE ALSO ARE FACING SOME MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES WITH SOME NEW PROCEDURES BEING IMPLEMENTED.

WE'RE CHANGING THE WAY THAT WE NOTIFY SOME PEOPLE ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE A JOB IN THE FALL.

I APPRECIATE MS. TRIPI LISTENING TO THOSE CONCERNS AND WORKING WITH PRINCIPALS TO ADDRESS THOSE CONCERNS.

WE'VE ALSO TALKED ABOUT HOW THIS CAN BE ROLLED OUT DIFFERENTLY IN THE FALL.

BUT I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT IF WE ARE GOING TO MAKE A CHANGE TO HOW WE'VE BEEN DOING SOMETHING FOR YEARS AND YEARS, THAT WE GET IN FRONT OF THOSE POSSIBLE OUTCOMES AND NOT BE PLAYING CATCH UP WITH IT.

WE'VE GOT ENOUGH TO WORRY ABOUT WITH OUR KIDDOS EVERY DAY.

WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO FOCUS ON TEACHING AND LEARNING EVERY DAY, AND NOT A MYRIAD OF OTHER THINGS THAT COULD BE PREVENTED IN THE FUTURE.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME TODAY, AND EACH DAY.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT I PRESENTED THIS EVENING?

>> QUESTION.

>> YES.

>> I THINK THERE ARE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM WHO TAUGHT MATT HEINECKE. TEACHER OF THE YEAR?

>> BOB DEMMON WAS ONE OF MY TEACHERS.

>> WOW. AGAIN, IT'S REALLY NEAT THAT YOU TRY TO LEAVE, BUT YOU COME BACK OR YOU JUST DECIDE, WHY EVEN TRY AND YOU JUST STAY.

IT'S LIKE THERE'S A BOOMERANG EFFECT HERE GOING ON.

>> WE'RE GROWING OUR OWN, IT'S FINE.

>> VERY WONDERFUL. THANK YOU FOR RECOGNIZING THAT.

>> THANKS SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU-ALL.

>> ITEM 5.2, STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT. KENZIE.

[5.2 Student Board Member Report: Wyatt Riebe]

>> HELLO. IS THAT LOUD ENOUGH? I'M GOING TO BEGIN TALKING ABOUT SILVER STRAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

AT TOMORROW'S FLAG POLE CEREMONY, THEY WILL BE CELEBRATING MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD.

I STILL HOPE THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE GIVING OUT SOME STENCILS BECAUSE THAT WAS MY FAVORITE PART, I REMEMBER.

THE FIFTH GRADE VOYAGERS WERE ALSO ABLE TO ATTEND THE ELECTIVE ASSEMBLY AT CMS, WHICH HELPED THEM GAIN SOME INSIGHT ABOUT THE CLASS OPTIONS THAT THEY HAVE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL GOING INTO NEXT YEAR, WHICH IS REALLY AWESOME.

VILLAGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BEFORE SPRING BREAK, THEY HOSTED THEIR ANNUAL JOG-A-THON, AND THEY RAISED $85,000.

THAT'S REALLY INCREDIBLE, AND I'M REALLY PROUD OF THEM FOR ALL OF THEIR EFFORTS IN THAT FUNDRAISER.

FOR THE EXPLORERS, IT IS MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD NEXT WEEK, SO THEY WILL BE CELEBRATING THAT.

THEY ALSO HAVE A CULTURAL FAIR ON APRIL 19, AND THEY WILL BE HOLDING THEIR OPEN HOUSE ON APRIL 24 AT 5:00 P.M. AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, THE ASP REPRESENTATIVES OF XCOM AND ME INCLUDED, ARE STARTING INTERVIEWING THE EIGHTH GRADERS FOR THE NEXT YEAR'S FRESHMAN ASP CLASS, WHICH IS REALLY EXCITING AND I LOVE INTERVIEWING THEM, IT'S SUCH A FUN PROCESS.

THEY HAVE SO MUCH ENERGY, IT'S GREAT.

THIS WEEK, APA IS ALSO HOLDING AUDITIONS FOR NEXT YEAR'S APA CLASS.

I WISH THEM LUCK BECAUSE I KNOW THAT WAS A REALLY STRESSFUL PROCESS WHEN I HAD TO GO THROUGH IT.

BOTH THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE HIGH SCHOOL ARE WRAPPING UP CAASPP TESTING.

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, THAT'LL BE ALL FINISHED AND I KNOW THE JUNIORS AT LEAST IN THE HIGH SCHOOL ARE VERY GLAD FOR THAT TO BE OVER.

AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, YESTERDAY, THE GIRLS LACROSSE TEAM WON THEIR SENIOR NIGHT AGAINST SCRIPPS RANCH, SO CONGRATS TO THEM.

TONIGHT IS SENIOR SWIM NIGHT SO THAT IS WHERE PRESIDENT [INAUDIBLE] IS AT, AND I HOPE THEY DO WELL TONIGHT AT ALL THEIR MEETS.

NEXT FRIDAY, ACTUALLY, WE HAVE FACULTY BASKETBALL, IT'S MR. SILVERMAN AGAINST MR. DEAN AND THAT THE THEME IS CIVIL WAR.

THAT'S GOING TO BE A REALLY EXCITING GAME, I'M REALLY PUMPED BECAUSE IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE EVENTS.

WE ALSO HAVE A SPIRIT WEEK NEXT WEEK CELEBRATING THAT, WHICH INCLUDES DAYS LIKE WHITE LIES, WHERE YOU DRESS AS YOUR FAVORITE TEACHER AND A COUPLE MORE.

THAT'LL BE REALLY EXCITING TO GET THE STUDENTS HYPED FOR THE GAME ON FRIDAY.

FOLLOWING FACULTY BASKETBALL, WE HAVE DIRT IN THE PAINT, WHICH THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR WE'VE DONE IN A ROW.

IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS REINTRODUCED TO OUR SCHOOL.

THE SENIOR CLASS SPONSORS THE DANCE AND WE'RE DOING REDWAY AND BLUE PAINT, AND IT'S A REALLY FUN DANCE. I'M EXCITED.

THAT WILL BE RIGHT AFTER THE FACULTY BASKETBALL GAME.

[01:00:02]

COSA PIPPIN ALSO OPENS NEXT FRIDAY SO THAT WILL BE GOING ON FOR TWO WEEKENDS.

THEIR OPENING NIGHT IS NEXT FRIDAY, AND I'M REALLY EXCITED TO SEE THAT WHEN I GET THE CHANCE TO.

IT'S THE LAST OFFICIAL SHOW OF THE YEAR, SO THEY'VE BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD, TECHNIQUE, ALL THE PRACTICES, ALL THAT STUFF.

THE CLASS OF 2026 IS LAUNCHING A DISCOUNT CARD FUNDRAISER THAT INCLUDES THOUSANDS OF NATIONWIDE BUSINESSES, AS WELL AS DOZENS OF LOCAL CORONADO BUSINESSES.

THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME MORE INFORMATION IN MS. [INAUDIBLE] NEWSLETTER FOLLOWING THIS, BUT THIS IS SOMETHING NEW THAT THEY ARE SPONSORING, AND IT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR THE WHOLE COMMUNITY TO PURCHASE.

THEY'RE BASICALLY DISCOUNT CARDS THAT GIVES YOU DISCOUNTS ONLINE FOR CORONADO LOCAL BUSINESSES, AND CAN BE USED ALL AROUND THE WORLD, SO IT'S REALLY COOL.

THIS WEEK, THE ASP SENIORS, AS I HAD SAID, HAVE BEEN CONDUCTING ASP INTERVIEWS FOR THE CURRENT HIGH SCHOOLERS, AND WE ARE GOING OVER APPLICATIONS AND THE FINAL LIST WILL BE OUT NEXT FRIDAY.

THAT IS REALLY EXCITING WRAPPING UP, TRANSITIONING INTO THE NEXT YEAR, AND I'M EXCITED TO SEE WHAT NEXT YEAR HOLDS FOR CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. GREAT JOB.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I'VE GOT A QUICK QUESTION FOR MS. [INAUDIBLE] HERE.

MS. [INAUDIBLE] AND I WERE JUST THINKING, SO WE HAD KENZIE IN FIFTH GRADE, AND THEN ADEN ANDERSON WAS HERE A MINUTE AGO, BOTH OF OUR CLASSES, SO WE'RE SUPER EXCITED.

CAN YOU TELL US WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO SCHOOL AND WHAT SCHOLARSHIPS YOU GOT? TELL A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

>> YES. I'M GOING TO UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY NEXT FALL TO STUDY MOLECULAR AND CELL BIOLOGY.

I'M VERY EXCITED, AND I WILL BE A REGENTS' AND CHANCELLOR'S SCHOLAR NEXT YEAR.

>> WOW, CONGRATULATIONS, THAT'S AMAZING.

>> THANK YOU.

>> ITEM 5.3, LEARNING DEPARTMENT REPORT, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.

[5.3 Learning Department Report: Senior Director of Learning, Dr. Megan Battle]

> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS PETERS.

I UNDERSTAND TRUSTEES IN THE COMMUNITY HAVE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW DR. BATTLE'S REPORT. DR. BATTLE.

>> CONGRATULATIONS, KENZIE.

I REMEMBER WE WERE AT THE PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE COALITION THREE, AND THE NEXT MORNING WAS HER BIG INTERVIEW WITH BERKELEY TO GET THE SCHOLARSHIP, AND SO CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU.

GOOD EVENING, GOVERNING BOARD.

MY REPORT THIS EVENING WAS AN UPDATE AND JUST MORE OF A INFORMATIONAL ITEM ON STEM CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION IN OUR DISTRICT, AND OUR INTENTIONAL ACTIONS TO HELP US ALIGN STEM, NGSS, COMPUTER SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, TEACHING, AND LEARNING K-12.

I DID OUTLINE FOR YOU SOME OF OUR MOST RECENT ACTIVE GRANTS, AND HOW OUR LATEST GRANT, WHICH IS PROJECT CS+ INTENTIONALLY BRINGS TOGETHER FULL CIRCLE ALL OF THESE EFFORTS WITH E3 PROJECT SALE, WHICH IS OUR NEWEST GRANT.

WE'RE IN YEAR ONE, WHICH IS THE PLANNING YEAR.

I KNOW, MS. YUCUTZ WHO IS IN OUR AUDIENCE.

SHE'S PART OF OUR PROJECT SALES TEAM, SUPER EXCITING AND THEN COMPUTER SCIENCE+.

THIS GRAPHIC REALLY HELPS US ALIGN OUR STRATEGIC VISION TO BRING TOGETHER COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS PRACTICES.

IT IS GROUNDED IN RESEARCH, THAT THE PURPOSEFUL ALIGNMENT OF THESE DISCIPLINES WHEN TAUGHT IN THE CLASSROOM, WILL SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN ALL AREAS, INCLUDING READING AND THINGS THAT ARE OUTSIDE OF THESE CIRCLES, SO WE WANTED TO UPDATE YOU ON THAT GRANT.

ON THE NEXT SLIDE, THERE WAS A CHART.

IT WAS TO PROVIDE YOU WITH AN OVERVIEW OF SOME OF OUR ONGOING EFFORTS, SUPPORT RESOURCES THAT ARE HELPING US ESTABLISH, EXPAND, AND IMPROVE UPON OUR STEM, NGSS CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT AT EACH LEVEL, ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL.

THIS WAS A SHORT LIST, 30,000 FOOT VIEW OF THINGS THAT WE'RE WORKING ON.

A LOT OF THESE THINGS REQUIRE ONGOING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING, WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT I DIDN'T EXPLICITLY CALL OUT IN THE REPORT, BUT PROFESSIONAL LEARNING IS ALWAYS A FOUNDATIONAL COMPONENT OF ALL OF THESE INITIATIVES.

WHAT I THINK IS MOST EXCITING, I DID NOT WRITE THIS IN HERE, BUT THE PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE, WE'RE ALMOST TO THE END OF THE YEAR WITHOUT WORK,

[01:05:03]

AND A LOT OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE FINDING COMING OUT OF A YEAR LONG PROCESS WITH THE PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE, DIRECTLY ALIGNED TO THESE PIECES AS WELL IN SCIENCE.

IT'S JUST REALLY EXCITING TO START TO REALLY SEE THE THROUGH LINE OF ALL OF THESE EFFORTS, AND CONNECTING THE DOTS AND IT COMING TOGETHER.

THE LAST PARAGRAPH GAVE YOU A LITTLE SNEAK PEEK OF SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE WROTE INTO OUR NEW COMPUTER SCIENCE+ GRANT.

FINGERS CROSS, WE'LL FIND OUT IN SEPTEMBER.

IT'S NOW THE WAITING GAME TO SEE IF WE GET THE $1.25 MILLION FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE.

BUT YOU LOOK AT THAT LIST, OUR KIDS ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO HAVE AMAZING EXPERIENCES HERE IN CORONADO.

WE ADDED IN DRONES IN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN CERTIFICATIONS BEFORE THEY LEAVE HIGH SCHOOL IN COMMERCIAL AND RECREATIONAL FAA DRONE FLIGHT, SOME REALLY NEW THINGS ON THE HORIZON.

I'M HERE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU HAVE.

>> QUESTIONS?

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I HAVE A COMMENT MORE THAN A QUESTION.

WHAT I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE IS HOW THIS EVENING HAS BEEN QUITE A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN IN STEM.

WE HAD NICOLE BELONG, AP SCIENCE TEACHER, WE HAVE DR. BATTLE, WHO CAME FROM A SCIENCE BACKGROUND AS WELL, NOT ONLY OUR ESTEEMED DIRECTOR OF LEARNING, AND THEN WE HAVE KENZIE, WHO'S GOING ON TO CAL BERKELEY WITH, WHAT IS IT MOLECULAR?

>> IN CELL BIOLOGY.

>> AND CELL BIOLOGY.

[LAUGHTER] WE'VE THE CAST SCORES THAT WERE NOT GREAT.

WE WERE WORRIED. WE'VE BEEN WORRIED ABOUT SCIENCE INSTRUCTION.

WHILE WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN TO LOOK AT THOSE TEST SCORES, WE ACTUALLY ARE REALLY SHOWING OUR STUDENTS WHAT'S POSSIBLE.

I'M SITTING HERE THE PRODUCT OF ONE OF OUR GREATEST SCIENCE TEACHERS OF ALL TIME, MR. SEGER.

WELL, PLEASE BUT NEVER SATISFIED, CERTAINLY APPLIES HERE, BUT WE ARE REALLY STRIVING TO BRING THOSE TEST SCORES UP, BUT WE'RE ALSO SEEING WHERE SOME OF THAT'S PAYING OFF.

I JUST WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE LEARNING DEPARTMENT FOR KEEPING FOCUS ON THAT BECAUSE I KNOW WE ASKED AS A BOARD TO STAY FOCUSED ON SCIENCE, AND I THINK WE'RE REALLY TAKING THAT TO HEART, AND I'M EXCITED TO SEE ALL OF THESE THINGS.

IT'S GOING TO BE AMAZING. THANK YOU.

>> I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS. I JUST WANTED TO CLARIFY OR MAKE SURE THE COMPUTER SCIENCE GRANT PROPOSAL, THAT'S K THROUGH 12 FOR ALL OF THAT AS WELL.

CAN YOU TELL ME MAYBE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN MORE OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LEVEL, THE COMPUTER SCIENCE PIECE? I DON'T KNOW IF WE HAVE ANY OF THAT NOW OR WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE FOR OUR THIRD GRADE OR SOMETHING.

>> WE DID AS PART OF THE DATA THAT WE INCLUDED IN OUR GRANT FOR THE WHY WE'RE APPLYING FOR THIS WAS AN ELEMENTARY SURVEY OF WHAT DOES COMPUTER SCIENCE LOOK LIKE NOW IN ELEMENTARY, LIKE WHAT EXPERIENCES ARE STUDENTS GETTING AND IT'S ALL OVER THE MAP.

WELL, THEY DO A LITTLE CODING DURING OUR CODE, OR IN THE ILAB THEY DO THIS ONE PROJECT OR SOME CLASSROOMS, WE'RE DOING THIS.

THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS HAPPENING, BUT THE STATE HAS A COMPUTER SCIENCE FRAMEWORK AND COMPUTER SCIENCE STANDARDS, K-12.

THE GOAL WITH SPECIFICALLY ELEMENTARY IS TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR KINDERGARTNERS ARE EXPOSED TO THE COMPUTER SCIENCE STANDARDS, WHERE TO LIVE ON A PLATE.

WE'RE NOT LOOKING TO ADD TO A TEACHER'S PLATE.

YOU HEARD ONE OF OUR SPEAKERS MENTION PLATES ARE FULL AND WE'RE WELL AWARE OF THAT.

BUT WE'RE LOOKING AT HOW WE CAN INTEGRATE THOSE COMPONENTS INTO THE ILAB EXPERIENCE SPECIAL.

BUT SOME OF THE COMPUTER SCIENCE STANDARDS AT THE LOWER GRADES ARE, FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH A KEYBOARD, FOR OUR LITTLE LITTLES.

SOME OF THE THINGS WE'RE ALREADY DOING, BUT IT'S REALLY LOOKING AT THE STANDARDS BY GRADE LEVEL AND FIGURING OUT WHERE WE CAN EXPOSE KIDS TO ALL THE STANDARDS AS THEY ARTICULATE UP THE GRADES.

SOME OF THEM LEND THEMSELVES TO INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS, WHICH IS REALLY EXCITING AND PART OF THE GRANT WOULD BE PARTNERING WITH OUR COUNTY OFFICE.

THEY HAVE A COMPUTER SCIENCE COORDINATOR WHO HAS ALREADY CREATED GREAT DOCUMENTS ON ALIGNING THE COMPUTER SCIENCE STANDARDS AND HOW THEY'RE CONNECTED TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS STANDARDS AND ALSO THE MATH STANDARDS.

SOME OF THAT FOUNDATIONAL WORK HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE WITH THOSE STANDARDS, BUT ELEMENTARY, IT'S MAKING SURE ALL KIDS ARE EXPOSED TO THE STANDARDS, AND THEN OFFERING THOSE EXTRACURRICULAR ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES, GUEST SPEAKERS.

[01:10:04]

IS THERE A FIELD TRIP WE CAN TAKE AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

>> GREAT. WITH THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, I SEE THE CTE COMING SOON.

IS THAT LOOKING AT THOSE FAA REMOTE PILOT AND RECREATIONAL DRONE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL, OR WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS?

>> PART OF THE CTE PORTION OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL WOULD BE BUILDING DOWN.

THEY HAVE CTE COURSES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLS, BUT IT'S LOOKING AT WHAT ARE THE SIX PATHWAYS AT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, AND HOW WE CAN START TO INCORPORATE SOME OF THOSE MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES TO REALLY PREPARE OUR KIDS FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL PATHWAYS, AND SO THERE'S FOR EXAMPLE, FOUNDATIONS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE, MIDDLE SCHOOL CTE COURSE.

THE GOAL WOULD BE TO INCREASE ENROLLMENT AND PROVIDE MORE OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AND ELECTIVES AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

BUT ARTICULATING DOWN FROM THE PATHWAYS THAT ALREADY EXIST AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND ENGINEERING IN MEDICINE, THE BIOMEDICAL PATHWAY AND THEN COMPUTER SCIENCE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> ONE OF THE CONCERNS THAT'S BEEN RAISED AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL IS TEACHERS EXPRESSING A LACK OF LITERALLY SPACE FOR LAB TYPE EQUIPMENT, WHETHER IT'S COMPUTER SCIENCE OR OTHER STEM ACTIVITIES.

IS THERE POTENTIAL IN THIS GRANT FOR MAYBE SEPARATE OR ADDITIONAL SPACE OR ADDITIONAL MATERIALS THAT COULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL OF THE ELEMENTARY TEACHERS THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR STEM TYPE CURRICULUM?

>> AS FAR AS A FACILITY SPACE, NO.

NOT IN THE GRANT, BUT MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED IN THE GRANT.

A LOT OF THEM ARE DIGITAL MATERIALS AND THEN THINGS THAT ARE TANGIBLES OR CONSUMABLES.

WE HAVE POD AREAS, SO WE WOULD GET CREATIVE WITH SPACE, BUT A LOT OF THESE LINE ITEMS THAT I LISTED HERE ARE MEANT TO BE SHARED BETWEEN CLASSROOMS BECAUSE THEY'RE PRICEY.

LIKE THE ROBOBLOCKY, LINKBOTS, AND OMNIBOTS AND YEAH, IT'S ANOTHER LANGUAGE.

BUT YEAH, THEY'RE MEANT TO BE SHARED MATERIALS.

>> I'M A LITTLE EMBARRASSED TO ASK THIS QUESTION, BUT I'M GOING TO ANYWAY.

>> I THINK I ALMOST ASKED IT. [LAUGHTER]

>> WHAT ARE ESPORTS? [LAUGHTER].

>> THANK YOU. I'LL DO MY BEST.

I'M STILL LEARNING A LOT ABOUT ESPORTS, BUT IT IS A CIF-SANCTIONED SPORT NOW AND SO IT IS GAMING.

THERE'S SPECIFIC GAMES THAT CIF RECOGNIZES FOR THE COMPETITION.

IF WE THINK ABOUT ROBOTICS AND THE COMPETITIONS THEY GO TO AND THEY BUILD, INSTEAD, THE STUDENTS ARE ON A DEVICE AND THERE'S CERTAIN GAMES THAT THEY LOG INTO.

THERE'S INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIONS, AND THEN THERE'S TEAM COMPETITIONS.

BUT THERE'S ANYWHERE FROM SANCTION GAMES FOR CODING, LIKE SPEED CODING, LIKE HOW FAST CAN YOU CODE SOMETHING GIVEN A PROBLEM, TO DOING FIFA SPORTS IS ANOTHER ONE THAT'S CIF SANCTIONED.

BUT THE MONARCH SCHOOL HERE ACROSS THE BRIDGE IN DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO, THEY STARTED THE ESPORTS PROGRAM AT THEIR SCHOOL AND SO THEY'VE BEEN DOING IT NOW SIX OR SEVEN YEARS.

SOME OF OUR STAFF WENT AND WATCHED ONE OF THEIR COMPETITIONS TO GET MORE FAMILIAR WITH IT.

WE DO HAVE SOME STAFF MEMBERS THAT WANT TO BE THE COACH AND THERE'S A TRAINING THIS SUMMER.

THE COUNTY OFFICE HAS A ESPORTS PERSON THAT'LL HELP US AND IT'S AT COLLEGES NOW.

THERE'S WHOLE FACILITIES THAT SUPPORT ESPORTS.

BUT THERE'S A GREAT GRAPHIC WE FOUND TO INCLUDE, WE ENDED UP NOT INCLUDING IT IN THE GRANT BECAUSE WE HAD TO HAVE ONLY 60 PAGES.

BUT IT DOES SHOW HOW PARTICIPATION IN ESPORTS, HOW IT CONNECTS TO ALL JOBS IN THE INDUSTRY.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT GAMING, BUT THERE'S OTHER WHAT WE LIKE TO CALL SOFT SKILLS INVOLVED, BUT ALSO BEING ABLE TO PROBLEM SOLVE AND STRATEGIZE AND WORK AS A TEAM.

>> KENZIE, YOU'RE GOING INTO SCIENCE STUFF, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON [LAUGHTER] THE SCIENCE PROGRAM HERE, THE CLASSES YOU TOOK OR ESPORTS OR DO YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THE DIRECTION THE DISTRICT IS GOING? YEAH, PUSH REAL HARD.

>> I DID HAVE ONE QUESTION ACTUALLY.

WHEN I WAS LOOKING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, BIOLOGY, THROUGH A NEW CURRICULUM.

DO YOU KNOW, IF YOU KNOW, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE NGSS PER SE AP CHEM OR AP PHYSICS AND HOW DOES THE RIGOR OF THOSE CLASSES, THE EXPERIENCES, DO THOSE GIVE ANY CREDITS PER SE?

[01:15:01]

I WAS JUST CURIOUS. I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THAT CURRICULUM.

ALSO, HOW WOULD YOU EXPECT TEACHERS? I KNOW OUR TEACHERS ALREADY HAVE A LOT ON THEIR PLATE, AND ESPECIALLY THE SCIENCE TEACHERS, A LOT OF THEM THAT I KNOW THEY ALREADY TEACH MAYBE TWO DIFFERENT SCIENCE CLASSES.

HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE THE TRANSITION OF THEM HAVING TO LEARN A NEW CURRICULUM AND TEACH IT THAT WAY? I WAS JUST CURIOUS IF YOU HAD ANY INFORMATION.

[OVERLAPPING]

>> GREAT QUESTION. THE EXPERIENCE, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, BIOLOGY, WE ADOPTED THAT TWO YEARS AGO, SO OUR TEACHERS ARE TRAINED IN THAT.

BUT THE HIGH SCHOOL IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN ELEMENTARY BECAUSE IT WOULD BE MORE THROUGH ELECTIVE CLASSES AND SPECIALIZED CLASSES WHERE WE WOULD SUPPORT EXPANSION OF A CTE PATHWAY.

BUT IN OUR REGULAR SCIENCE PATHWAY CURRICULUM, THIS IS OUR NEW CURRICULUM AND WE BOUGHT NEW CURRICULUM TO BE ALIGNED WITH NGSS STANDARDS.

OUR PRIOR TEXTBOOKS WERE NOT DIRECTLY ALIGNED WITH THE CALIFORNIA STANDARDS.

SO NOW WE'RE CONFIDENT IN THIS NEW CURRICULUM.

OUR AP CURRICULUM, WE HAVE PURCHASED A NUMBER OF NEW AP PROGRAMS AS WELL THAT ARE ALIGNED TO THE AP STANDARDS. YEAH.

>> AWESOME. THANK YOU FOR CLARIFYING.

I JUST WANT TO SAY SOMETHING I'M ACTUALLY IN BIOMEDICAL INNOVATIONS, WHICH IS A CLASS I THINK THEY IMPLEMENTED TWO YEARS AGO.

I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THAT YOU GUYS HAVE PUT INTO THOSE TYPES OF ELECTIVES.

TODAY, WE DISSECTED A PIG IN CLASS.

IN PREVIOUS CLASSES THAT I'VE BEEN IN LIKE HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS, AND EVEN EXPANDING INTO MIDDLE SCHOOL, I REMEMBER THERE WAS LOTS OF DISSECTIONS AND I KNOW THIS FUNDING GOES TOWARDS THINGS LIKE THAT.

I JUST REALLY APPRECIATE YOU GUYS PUTTING FORTH THAT BECAUSE IT'S SOMETHING THAT DEFINITELY SOLIDIFIED MY INTEREST IN GOING INTO SCIENCE.

I THINK FOR A LOT OF STUDENTS, IT MIGHT JUST TAKE THAT ONE LAB FOR THEM TO REALIZE THEY HAVE A PASSION FOR IT.

I DON'T KNOW OF A LOT OF SCHOOLS WHO HAVE THE FUNDING TO BE ABLE TO DO THOSE TYPE OF COOL LABS THAT ESCAPE THE NORMAL NOTE-TAKING SYSTEM OF CLASSES.

I JUST REALLY APPRECIATE THAT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> MY NEXT SITE VISIT, I WANT TO WATCH A DISSECTION.

[LAUGHTER] ANY OTHER THOUGHTS? THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU.

>> ITEM 5.4 DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT UPDATES. DEPUTY SALMANKA.

[5.4 Deputy Superintendent Updates]

>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS PETERS.

I TRUST THE BOARD AND COMMUNITY HAVE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW MY REPORT.

IT DOES CONTAIN SOME OF THE USUAL SUSPECTS LIKE OUR MONTHLY ATTENDANCE UPDATES.

THERE ARE A FEW ITEMS THAT ARE NEW TO THIS.

WELL, WE HAD OUR BUDGET STUDY COMMITTEE MEETING YESTERDAY.

I WANT TO THANK THE 16 PARTICIPANTS THAT JOINED US YESTERDAY.

IT WAS A LIVELY BUNCH, AND I THINK WE COVERED SOME GREAT TOPICS.

WE INCLUDE A LINK TO OUR HISTORICAL SLIDE DECK.

I THINK WE'RE AT 402 SLIDES SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE BUDGET STUDY COMMITTEE.

YOU CAN FIND THOSE LINKS ON THE WEBSITE, AND A NEW RESOURCE THAT WE HAVE ADDED IS TWO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS PAGES.

WE'RE COMMITTED TO OPEN AND TRANSPARENT COMMUNICATION.

THERE IS A BUDGET, FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS DOCUMENT, WHICH I INCLUDED A QR CODE TO THAT AND A LINK IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, AS WELL AS A NEW PAGE ON OUR WEBSITE TO UPDATE THE BOARD AND COMMUNITY ABOUT OUR ONGOING NEGOTIATIONS WITH OUR LABOR GROUPS.

SO WE DID RECENTLY POST AN UPDATE REGARDING CURRENT NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE ASSOCIATION OF CORONADO TEACHERS.

I'M AVAILABLE FOR ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE.

>> DO WE HAVE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON THIS ITEM? TRUSTEES.

>> I DO HAVE A QUESTION, PLEASE.

DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT, WE EARLIER APPROVED A CALENDAR FOR THE 24-25 SCHOOL YEAR THAT INCLUDES A THREE DAY WEEK.

HOW IS THAT GOING TO IMPACT ATTENDANCE?

>> THAT IS A GREAT QUESTION.

LOOKING AT THE ACTIVITIES THAT TYPICALLY HAPPEN THAT WOULD MARK THE END OF THE FIRST SEMESTER.

I KNOW AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, THAT WILL BE FINALS WEEK, SO WE ANTICIPATE THAT ATTENDANCE SHOULD BE VERY HIGH THAT WEEK, AND WE WILL BE LOOKING VERY CLOSELY AT THE IMPACTS OF THAT ON ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL.

>> WE TALK ABOUT ATTENDANCE A LOT AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO OUR BUDGET, OUR BOTTOM LINE, IF THERE'S ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO ENCOURAGE FAMILY TO SAY BECAUSE WITH THAT THREE DAY WEEK, YOU CAN'T DO THE INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACT.

EVEN IF YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE YOUR KIDS OUT TO GO SEE SOMETHING FABULOUS, I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE CHALLENGING, AND I HOPE WE CAN COME UP WITH WAYS TO MAYBE INCENTIVIZE FOLKS TO STAY AND MAKE SURE THEY DON'T MISS FINALS.

BUT ALSO, THAT WOULD BE A LOT OF A LOSS TO OUR BUDGET, SO CONCERNED ABOUT THAT. THANK YOU.

[01:20:05]

>> I'M SORRY. I WAS JUST GOING TO WAIT UNTIL EVERYONE ELSE ASKED THEIR QUESTION.

GOING BACK TO ATTENDANCE, FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING AT THE VERY BOTTOM OUR BUDGET IS BASED ON 96% ATTENDANCE, BUT OUR GOAL IS 97% ATTENDANCE.

A SHOUT OUT TO GRADE 9, THE ONLY GRADE IN THE WHOLE SCHOOL DISTRICT WHO IS ABOVE 96% SO FAR FOR THE YEAR.

JUST TO CLARIFY, WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ATTENDANCE, WE'RE NOT BASING IT ON 100% ATTENDANCE, WE DON'T EXPECT 100% ATTENDANCE.

>> THAT'S CORRECT.

>> SHOOTING FOR 97% IS FAIRLY DOABLE.

THAT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT GETTING SICK AND THINGS THAT HAPPEN.

THAT BEING SAID, BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T REACHED OUR GOAL OF 97%, THAT'S OVER $1 MILLION THAT WE'VE LOST IN REVENUE SO FAR, JUST THIS YEAR.

>> THAT'S CORRECT.

>> IT HASN'T BEEN GETTING ANY BETTER ALL YEAR, SO WHEN WE'RE MAKING OUR PROJECTIONS FOR NEXT YEAR, INSTEAD OF BUILDING OUR BUDGETS ON 96% ATTENDANCE, SHOULD WE DO 95% ATTENDANCE? WHAT WOULD THAT LOOK LIKE?

>> LET ME REITERATE TO MAKE SURE I UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION.

WE, EVERY YEAR, HAVE TO FORECAST WHAT ATTENDANCE WILL BE TO FORECAST HOW MUCH WE AS A DISTRICT CAN EXPECT IN LCFF REVENUES.

BASED OFF OF HISTORICAL NUMBERS, BOTH MOSTLY PRE-PANDEMIC, BECAUSE WE'VE HAD SOME HOLD HARMLESS YEARS IN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, WE HAVE A LONG HISTORY OF 96% OR 96.5% IN TERMS OF ATTENDANCE.

WE'VE HAD A REASONABLE ASSURANCE THAT WE COULD USE THAT NUMBER.

I THINK TO YOUR POINT, WE'RE NOT SEEING THAT HERE IN OUR NUMBERS FOR THIS YEAR.

>> NOT ON ANY GRADE LEVEL EXCEPT GRADE 9.

>> TO TAKE THAT A STEP FURTHER, WE KNOW THAT IF WE HAVE 100% ATTENDANCE, WE'RE ENTITLED TO THE FULL AMOUNT PER STUDENT.

EACH PERCENTAGE DOWN, WE ARE LEAVING MONEY ON THE TABLE AND NOT GETTING THAT FROM THE STATE, SO THE DIFFERENCE REALLY IS, WE'RE BUDGETING FOR 96% OF 24-25, IF THAT PERCENTAGE DOESN'T COME TO FRUITION, THEN WE'RE ACTUALLY FUNDED LESS THAN WHAT WE'RE INCLUDING IN OUR BUDGETED NUMBERS.

>> COULD THAT BE MORE CUTS?

>> THAT COULD POTENTIALLY MEAN MORE CUTS.

WE KNOW THAT WE PRIORITIZE ATTENDANCE.

WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT NEXT YEAR'S ATTENDANCE PROJECTIONS, WE'VE BUILT IN A SLIGHT INCREASE IN ENROLLMENT, AND WE'RE REALLY FOCUSED ON ENSURING ATTENDANCE IN EACH GIVEN YEAR.

WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE THE HIGHEST OF THE CURRENT YEAR OR THE PREVIOUS YEAR, SO WE'RE ESSENTIALLY GAMBLING A LITTLE BIT THAT WE'RE GOING TO HIT AT 96% IN THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR.

TO YOUR POINT, SHOULD WE BE BUDGETING AT 95%, THAT WOULD BE MORE CONSERVATIVE, YES.

THAT'S SOMETHING WE'VE CONSIDERED.

>> THANK YOU, DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT.

ITEM 5.5 SUPERINTENDENT UPDATES.

[5.5 Superintendent Updates]

>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS PETERS.

AS DIRECTED BY THE GOVERNING BOARD, I'M PROVIDING MONTHLY SAFETY UPDATES ON THINGS FROM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO STUDENT EXPERIENCES TO FACILITIES, AND THIS MONTH.

I HIGHLIGHTED THREE INITIATIVES FROM THE PREVIOUS MONTH.

I KNOW THE GOVERNING BOARD IN OUR COMMUNITY HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW MY REPORT, AND I'M AVAILABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE.

>> DO WE HAVE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 5.5?

>> TRUSTEES, I HAVE A QUESTION, PLEASE.

SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER, THE CORONADO POLICE DEPARTMENT INTERDEPARTMENTAL ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING THAT WILL BE COMING UP ON SOME OF OUR CAMPUSES, WILL THAT INCLUDE PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS OR STAFF?

>> THANK YOU FOR THE QUESTION, TRUSTEE ANTRIM.

NO. OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF CORONADO, ANNUALLY WE HOST ON OUR CAMPUSES' INTERDEPARTMENTAL TRAININGS.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND OTHER AGENCIES COME IN AND CONDUCT TRAININGS.

THOSE DO NOT INVOLVE OUR STAFF.

ALTHOUGH OUR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS TEAM WILL BE AVAILABLE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS REGARDING ACCESS TO CERTAIN FACILITIES, BUILDINGS, THEY USE OUR FACILITIES WITH

[01:25:02]

THE INFORMATION THAT THEY HAVE ABOUT THE BLUEPRINTS OF OUR CAMPUSES, AND THEN OFFER SUGGESTIONS TO US ABOUT OUR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PLAN, BUT NO STUDENTS AND NO STAFF ARE INVOLVED.

>> THANK YOU. ITEM 6.1,

[6.1 Revisions to Board Policies, Board Bylaws, Administrative Regulations, and/or Exhibits]

REVISIONS TO BOARD POLICIES, BOARD BY LAWS, ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATIONS, AND OR EXHIBITS.

THIS IS A FIRST READING.

ANY COMMENTS? ARE THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENTS ON ITEM 6.1?

>> JUST MOVE ON.

>> THESE ARE FIRST READS. THESE WILL BE BROUGHT BACK TO TRUSTEES AT OUR MAY BOARD MEETING, ALONG WITH AT LEAST ONE, IF NOT, ADDITIONAL FIRST READS ON OTHER BOARD POLICIES IN MAY.

>> SOUNDS GREAT. OKAY. ITEM SEVEN, THERE WERE NO ITEMS PULLED FROM THE CONSOLIDATED MOTION FOR CONSENT CALENDAR.

ITEM EIGHT, PUBLIC COMMENTS ON NON AGENDIZED ITEMS. ANYONE WISHING TO SPEAK TO A NON AGENDA ITEM OR A CLOSED SESSION ITEM ARE INVITED TO QUEUE BEHIND THE PODIUM AND STATE THEIR NAME AND CITY PRIOR TO SPEAKING.

EACH SPEAKER WILL HAVE THREE MINUTES AND MAY NOT YIELD THEIR TIME.

IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON NON AGENDA ITEMS? ALL RIGHT. ITEM 8.2, BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.

[8.2 Board Member Comments]

WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO START? YOU DON'T MIND IF I COULD INVITE SOME FEEDBACK IF IT BECOMES RELEVANT?

>> YEAH. [INAUDIBLE] I'D LIKE TO START BY THANKING THE STAFF AND MADAM PRESIDENT FOR THIS MEETING.

WE REALLY, OBVIOUSLY FOCUSED ON THE BUSINESS OF THE DISTRICT, BUT CELEBRATING TWO OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN THIS COMMUNITY, OUR MILITARY AND OUR HISTORY AND OUR SHARED CONNECTIONS.

AND SO IT'S JUST BEEN VERY MEANINGFUL AND I REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYONE THAT CAME AND THAT'S PARTICIPATED BECAUSE FROM THE NJRTC STUDENTS TO THE CELEBRATIONS OF THE TEACHERS, I REALLY APPRECIATED THE BALANCE THAT WAS PROVIDED.

I WILL ADD, JUST FOR FUNZIES BECAUSE I CAN, JUST THE FULL CIRCLE OF THE WHOLE THING.

NOT ONLY WAS MATT HEIKE IN MY CLASS, WE CO-STARRED AS THE LEADS IN BYE BYE BIRDIE.

>> WHAT.

>> THAT LINDA COLEMAN DIRECTED AND SHE RECRUITED THE THEN CITY MANAGER TO BE A SHRINER IN THE DANCE SCENE, AND THAT CITY MANAGER AND OTHER ADULTS SWUNG ME BY MY WRISTS AND ANKLES FROM A TABLE DURING A DANCE NUMBER.

SO IF THAT DOESN'T JUST BRING IT ALL TOGETHER, I THINK MR. SEKI REMEMBERS THAT.

AND NOW MS. COLEMAN IS TEACHING MY DAUGHTER.

SO IT'S JUST, YOU KNOW, THE FULL CIRCLE AND EVERYTHING.

BUT YEAH, I HAD TO SHARE THAT BECAUSE EVERYTHING KEPT SEEMING LIKE YOU ALL NEEDED TO KNOW THAT.

>> [INAUDIBLE] PLAY THE VIDEO.

>> AND THAT WAS FORTUNATE MAYBE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT AFTER THE MUSICAL CLOSED, MY FAMILY INFORMED ME THAT I REALLY CAN'T SING.

SO THAT WAS THE HARD TRUTH.

EVERYBODY WHO ATTENDED KNEW.

THAT WAS A TOUGH ONE TO TAKE.

BUT ANYWAY, THAT BEING SAID, MY MONTH HAS BEEN FILLED WITH A LOT OF COMMUNITY CONTACT.

I HAD OFFICE HOURS YESTERDAY, HAD A GREAT CONVERSATION WITH A YOUNG WOMAN WHO IS LOOKING AT A CAREER IN LAW, AND SO THAT WAS REALLY EXCITING TO CONNECT WITH STUDENTS AND WHAT THEIR LEARNING EXPERIENCES ARE LIKE AND HELPING PREPARE FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND WANTING TO GO INTO THE LEGAL FIELD.

I WILL LET MADAM PRESIDENT SHARE ABOUT OUR TRIP TO DC.

WE GOT BACK LAST WEEK.

IT WAS, I THINK, INCREDIBLY PRODUCTIVE AND USEFUL, REALLY GOT A LOT OUT OF IT, AND I THINK WE REPRESENTED OUR DISTRICT VERY WELL, SO PROUD TO BE THERE WITH YOU.

MY NEXT ADVENTURE OUT OF TOWN IS TO SACRAMENTO.

I'LL BE GOING TO THE STATE CAPITOL ON THE MIDDLE OF MAY AS A REPRESENTATIVE TO THE STATE DELEGATE ASSEMBLY FOR CALIFORNIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION.

AND WHILE THERE, I HAVE A PLAN.

I WAS THINKING I WOULD STOP INTO GOVERNOR NEWSOM'S OFFICE WITH WHAT I'M HOPING WILL BE A BIG STACK OF LETTERS FROM OUR COMMUNITY BEGGING HIM TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT OUR SEWAGE PROBLEM.

AS THE TRUSTEES ARE AWARE, I DID DRAFT A LETTER THAT WE'VE ALL AGREED TO NOW TO PUT OUR NAMES ON AND MOVE FORWARD WITH TO PRESIDENT BIDEN AND GOVERNOR NEWSOM.

[01:30:04]

AND I'VE ALSO TAKEN THE LIBERTY OF MAKING A VERSION OF THAT LETTER WITH BLANKS FOR FOLKS TO FILL IN ABOUT WHO THEY ARE IN THE CUSD COMMUNITY AND A PLACE TO SIGN AND JOIN OUR PLEASE FOR THEM TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE SEWAGE.

SO, A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC. THANK YOU, MS. COLEMAN.

I WAS HOPING IT MAY BE THE STUDENT CLUBS OR WE COULD GET SOME OF THE TEACHERS.

WE WILL BEAR THE COST OF PRINTING AND PREPARING A BUNCH OF BLANK ONES AND ANYBODY THAT WANTS THEM, WE CAN SEND THEM OUT ELECTRONICALLY, WE CAN BRING STACKS AROUND, WHATEVER WORKS.

I REALLY HOPE THE STUDENTS WILL LEAD ON THIS AND HELP ME GATHER A REALLY EMBARRASSING AMOUNT OF LETTERS TO DROP OFF AT GOVERNOR NEWSOM'S OFFICE WHEN I'M THERE NEXT MONTH.

ANYBODY THAT HAS FEEDBACK DURING YOUR COMMENTS OR THOUGHTS ON THAT, I WELCOME.

AND THANK YOU ALL FOR ANOTHER BUSY MONTH.

>> SURE, THANK YOU.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE SPECIAL BOARD MEETING A FEW WEEKS AGO ON MARCH 26TH FOR OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND THEIR PRESENTATIONS ON HOW THEY CONTRIBUTED TO THE SCHOOL AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND IN PARTICULAR TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO PUT THAT TOGETHER.

SO THANK YOU.

THAT WAS VERY INFORMATIVE, AND IT WAS GREAT TO CELEBRATE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.

BEEN FORTUNATE TO ATTEND A TRACK METER TWO AND TO INCLUDE LAST THURSDAY AT MADISON HIGH SCHOOL.

THE TRACK TEAM FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL DID VERY WELL, AND IT WAS GREAT TO SEE ALL OF THE SPIRIT DECO AND TEAMWORK AND TEAM SPIRIT THAT WAS THERE.

ALSO WAS ABLE TO ATTEND YESTERDAY'S BUDGET STUDY COMMITTEE.

I THINK IT IS VERY SOBERING WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE, I GUESS ALL OF THE FACTORS AND THE CURRENTS OF DECREASING REVENUE OR AT LEAST STATIC REVENUE AND INCREASING COSTS.

AND I DID WANT TO SAY A WORD ABOUT AT LEAST AS A TRUSTEE.

SO I THINK OUR PURPOSE OR OUR MISSION IS TO MAKE SURE THAT THE DISTRICT CONTINUES TO OFFER AND OPERATE THE BEST SCHOOL SYSTEM POSSIBLE FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT'S VIABLE GOING FORWARD.

AND I WILL SAY THAT OVER THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS THAT I THINK, CERTAINLY I IN MY DISCUSSIONS WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT, I CERTAINLY HAVE GIVEN A LOT MORE REVIEW OF VARIOUS ITEMS THAT ARE ON THE BUDGET.

YOU CAN SEE THERE THE PURCHASE ORDERS AND WARRANTS THAT ARE PUBLISHED IN THE BUDGET IN THE BOARD PACKET FOR THE AGENDA.

AND I DO WANT EVERYBODY TO KNOW THAT, AT LEAST IN THE MEETINGS THAT I'VE BEEN IN, WE HAVE GIVEN A LOT MORE SCRUTINY TO VARIOUS LINE ITEMS ABOUT WHY EXACTLY THIS IS BEING SPENT AND SOMETIMES THE ANSWER IS VERY GOOD.

SOMETIMES THE ANSWER IS THAT THERE'S A GRANT THAT PAYS FOR IT AND IT'S GOT SEPARATE FUNDING.

BUT I DO WANT EVERYBODY TO KNOW THAT THERE IS ADDITIONAL SCRUTINY BEING PLACED ON THE BUDGET FROM MY STANDPOINT, AND I THINK CERTAINLY FROM THE ADMINISTRATION THAT WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE MAINTAIN VIABILITY AND MAKE SURE WE DO AND CONCENTRATE ON THE BASICS.

AND THEN FINALLY, A WORD ABOUT THE CALENDAR, I'M GLAD THAT WE ARE FINALLY APPROVING IT.

I CERTAINLY SEE A LOT OF BENEFIT IN WRAPPING UP FINALS BEFORE WINTER BREAK.

I THINK THAT'S VERY COMPELLING.

BUT I'M SURE THERE ARE ARGUMENTS AGAINST THAT.

PROBABLY LIKE THERE'S NO PERFECT BELL SCHEDULE, THERE'S PROBABLY NO PERFECT CALENDAR.

SO I DO THINK AS A BOARD IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE COULD COMMIT TO TRYING TO PUBLISH OUR CALENDAR BEFORE THE END OF THE CALENDAR YEAR FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR.

I THINK THAT WE OWE THAT TO OUR COMMUNITY.

I THINK THAT'S AN ASPIRATION THAT I CERTAINLY CAN GET BEHIND.

WITH THAT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> FIRST, CONGRATS TO ALL OUR TEACHERS OF THE YEAR, IT'S A REALLY WONDERFUL TIME WHEN WE CAN CELEBRATE OUR TEACHERS, AND ALSO CONGRATS TO TRUSTEE PALACIOS PETERS AND HER HUSBAND FOR WINNING THE STOCKDALE AWARD.

I THINK YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN IT IN THE LOCAL PAPERS.

[01:35:03]

IT'S A REALLY BIG DEAL FOR JOSH AND ALEXIA, CONGRATS ON THAT. WELL DONE.

[APPLAUSE] THE OTHER DAY, I ATTENDED THE EMERALD KEEPERS PRESENTATION AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, AND IT WAS FOR THE NINTH AND 10TH GRADERS.

THE FIRST THING THAT STRUCK ME WAS HOW WELL BEHAVED OUR NINTH AND 10TH GRADERS WERE.

IT WAS IN THE THEATER AND THEY FLOWED IN QUIETLY.

THEY ALL WENT UP TO THE FRONT.

I WOULD HAVE GONE TO THE BACK.

THEY WENT TO THE FRONT AND FILLED IN ALL THE ROWS.

NO, OF COURSE, THEY ALL TOOK THEIR PHONES OUT, BUT THEN PRINCIPAL MOLINA GOES UP THERE, WELCOMES THEM AND SAID, PUT YOUR PHONES AWAY, ALL PHONES WENT AWAY, BECAUSE I WAS SITTING IN THE BACK AND I COULD LOOK DOWN AND SEE THAT.

THAT DID HAPPEN. I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED BY THAT. THAT STRUCK ME.

THEN THE EMERALD KEEPERS MEMBERS OF THE HIGH SCHOOL GAVE A PRESENTATION ON HOW TO USE THE RECYCLING AND THE WASTE BINS.

I GUARANTEE YOU NO ONE IN HERE KNOWS EXACTLY HOW TO DO IT BECAUSE IT'S COMPLICATED.

WHERE DOES AN EMPTY PIZZA BOX GO? I'VE BEEN DOING THIS WRONG.

IT GOES IN COMPOST.

I DID NOT KNOW THAT. I'VE BEEN PUTTING IT IN RECYCLING.

THE NEXT DAY ROCKY HERRON CAME AND OF COURSE, I CAN'T READ MY OWN CALENDAR, SO I SHOWED UP AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME, SO I MISSED IT, BUT MY NINTH GRADER WAS THERE AND HE USUALLY DOESN'T COME HOME AND TALK ABOUT ANYTHING OTHER THAN VIDEO GAMES, BUT HE CAME HOME AND STARTED TALKING ESPORTS.

FUNNY THING I VISITED WEST POINT OVER THE SPRING BREAK AND THEY HAVE AN ESPORTS TEAM AT WEST POINT.

I WAS LIKE OKAY.

WHERE'S THE WORLD GOING? HE STARTED TALKING TO ME ABOUT WHAT ROCKY HERRON HAD SAID.

HE TALKED ABOUT SMOKING, VAPING AND MARIJUANA AND HE STARTED TELLING ME SOME OF THE STORIES THAT ROCKY HAD SAID, SO IT RESONATED WITH MY NINTH GRADER, WHICH IS FANTASTIC.

IT MUST HAVE BEEN REALLY GOOD FOR HIM TO SAY SOMETHING.

I ALSO GOT TO VISIT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

IT WAS MY SITE VISIT THIS MONTH AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

I GO IN THERE AND I GO TO THE FRONT DESK AND THERE'S THE STAFF THERE AND THEY ASKED ME, WHO ARE YOU GOING TO VISIT AND I SAID, WELL, MS. [INAUDIBLE].

WE LOOKED AT EACH OTHER AWKWARDLY AND FINALLY FIGURED OUT SHE'S NOT MS. [INAUDIBLE] ANYMORE.

SHE'S MS. FALAR. SHE'S BEEN THERE FOR PROBABLY 10 YEARS, BUT I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS GOING ON.

BUT WE HAD A GREAT TIME.

EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO SHE WAS MS. [INAUDIBLE].

I HAD A GREAT DISCUSSION WITH HER.

AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, THEN THE MS. KRISTEN ERENO SET UP THE SECOND ANNUAL SPECIAL EDUCATION FAMILY RESOURCE NIGHT.

SHE HAD A BUNCH OF PRESENTERS COME, INCLUDING SAN DIEGO REGIONAL CENTER, CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION, EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER AND SEVERAL OTHERS, AND IT WAS FANTASTIC.

I GUESS LAST YEAR THEY DIDN'T HAVE MANY PEOPLE SHOW UP LIKE FIVE.

THIS YEAR, I COUNTED 20.

WE HAVE IN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE IEPS BECAUSE WE WE'RE ABOUT 3,000 STUDENTS, 15% ARE IEPS, THAT'S LIKE 450.

ALMOST 450 PEOPLE IN THE INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAM.

PEOPLE THAT WOULD NEED THESE RESOURCES.

IT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT MEETING.

THE ONLY THING I'LL ASK MS. ERENO TO DO IS MAYBE EXPAND IT TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

I THINK IT WAS ONLY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL FAMILIES, BUT IT WAS REALLY BENEFICIAL AND IT WAS REALLY WELL DONE.

THAT'S ALL I'VE GOT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. FIRST, I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE ALL OF THE EMAILS AND LETTERS THAT I'VE RECEIVED, I KNOW THE OTHER TRUSTEES HAVE RECEIVED ABOUT THE NEED FOR OUR DISTRICT TO DECREASE POSITIONS DUE TO FUNDING ISSUES.

REDUCING OR ELIMINATING POSITIONS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT ANY OF US TAKE LIGHTLY.

I KNOW THAT OUR DISTRICT TAKES EVERY PRECAUTION THEY CAN TO ENSURE THAT THESE REDUCTIONS DON'T HAPPEN.

BUT SOMETIMES, NO MATTER HOW CAREFUL FINANCIAL PLANNING AND PROJECTIONS ARE, IT JUST DOESN'T LINE UP WITH WHAT OUR FINAL FUNDING AMOUNTS ARE.

I UNDERSTAND THE ANXIETY THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE FEELING AND I'M HOPEFUL THAT A POSITIVE OUTCOME IS STILL POSSIBLE WITH THAT.

I HAD SITE VISITS AT SILVER STRAND VILLAGE THIS MONTH AND WHILE THE SCHOOL YEAR IS WINDING DOWN, THEY'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR AND PLANNING AND GETTING READY FOR THAT.

I AGREE WITH TRUSTEE SANDIE, IS THE EMERALD KEEPERS PRESENTATION WAS THE BEST.

I FINALLY KNOW WHERE ALL OF THE STUFF IS SUPPOSED TO GO, AND SO I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE

[01:40:01]

OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT PUT THAT LITTLE VIDEO THAT THEY DID MAYBE ON OUR WEBSITE SO THAT OTHERS CAN SEE IT.

I THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY WELL DONE.

I ATTENDED THE STOP THE SEWAGE CLUBS PROTEST RALLY ON MARCH 28TH, AND IT WAS GREAT TO SEE SO MANY STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND OFFICIALS THERE IN SUPPORT OF OUR STUDENTS IN THAT ISSUE.

I'M REALLY PROUD THAT OUR DISTRICT HAS BEEN PARTNERING WITH ROCKY HERRON FOR SO LONG.

I SAW THE PRESENTATION LAST YEAR THAT HE DID FOR THE PARENTS WHICH WAS REALLY GOOD, BUT YOU'RE RIGHT, THIS YEAR WAS INCREDIBLY IMPACTFUL.

I'M GRATEFUL THAT OUR STUDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR HIS MESSAGE.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I WANT TO GIVE A REALLY BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE ISLANDER TIMES WHO ONCE AGAIN HAVE FOOLED COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO HAVE COME UP TO ME EXTREMELY UPSET THAT WE ARE GETTING RID OF N ROTC AND HAVING A MANDATORY MILITARY READINESS CLASS.

THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS CAME TO ME WITH ALL OF REASONS OF WHY THAT WAS NOT A GOOD IDEA.

CONGRATULATIONS ONCE AGAIN.

>> I'D LIKE TO START WITH THE SEWAGE LETTER.

THANK YOU SO MUCH TRUSTEE ANTRIM FOR TAKING THE LEAD ON THAT AND WRITING IT.

I THINK IT'S A STRONG LETTER AND SHOWS OUR SUPPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY, TO THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES, AND TO OUR STUDENTS WHO HAVE ASKED US TO SUPPORT THEM, AND I LOVE THE IDEA OF THE INDIVIDUAL LETTERS AND TAKING A STACK UP THERE.

I HOPE THAT PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY AND OUR STUDENTS WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT AND REACH OUT TO YOU.

AS MENTIONED, TRUSTEE ANTRIM AND I WENT TO WASHINGTON, DC.

WAS THAT LAST WEEK? OH, MY GOSH.

LAST WEEK FOR ADVOCACY CONFERENCE.

I WASN'T SURE WHAT TO EXPECT.

IT WAS MY FIRST YEAR.

WE WERE ABLE TO HEAR SOME PRESENTATIONS ABOUT THE STATE OF EDUCATION ON THE FEDERAL LEVEL, AND WE WERE ABLE TO MEET WITH SCOTT PETERS AND TALK ABOUT SOME BILLS THAT ARE CURRENTLY PENDING.

THERE WERE ABOUT SIX. THE ONES THAT I THINK ARE RELEVANT TO OUR DISTRICT IS FUNDING FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION.

CONGRESS WHEN THEY IMPLEMENTED IDEA, PROMISE 40% FUNDING TO COMMUNITIES AND LOCAL DISTRICTS, AND THAT HAS ACTUALLY NEVER HAPPENED SINCE THAT WAS PASSED.

CALIFORNIA HAS RECEIVED 8% FUNDING LAST YEAR, AND SO WE'RE HAVING TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE FOR THE MANDATES THAT ARE COMING FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

THERE'S A BILL PENDING TO URGE CONGRESS TO GIVE US WHAT HAS BEEN PROMISED AND THAT WOULD HOPEFULLY AT SOME POINT HELP OUR FUNDING.

THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT WE ADVOCATED FOR.

THERE'S ALSO SOME TEACHER RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION, BILLS GOING DEALING WITH SOCIAL SECURITY AND OTHER ADDITIONAL HELP FOR MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS.

WE SPOKE WITH THE STAFF AT CONGRESSMAN PETERS'S OFFICE ABOUT SUPPORTING THAT AND THOSE BILLS AS WELL.

THEN BRIEFLY, I TALKED A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE TRUSTEE ANTRIM REMINDED ME EARLIER IN THE CONFERENCE ABOUT MILITARY SPOUSES AND THEIR ABILITY TO BE CERTIFIED IN CALIFORNIA WHEN THEY COME FROM OUT OF STATE.

WHILE THAT SEEMS TO BE MORE OF A CALIFORNIA ISSUE, PERHAPS THERE'S SOMETHING ON THE MILITARY LEVEL, THAT COULD HAPPEN.

OUT OF EVEN MENTIONING THAT I MET A TRUSTEE FROM SOLANA BEACH WHO SERVES WITH TRUSTEE ANTRIM AT THE DELEGATE ASSEMBLY FOR CSPA.

WE'RE GOING TO MEET AND TALK ABOUT WHAT WE CAN DO ON THE STATE LEVEL WITH REGARDS TO ADVOCACY.

I KNOW TRUSTEE ANTRIM HAS IT ON HER LIST OF THINGS WHEN YOU GO IN MAY AS WELL.

THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT FOR OUR MILITARY SPOUSES WHO ARE COMING IN TO WORK ON THAT.

I ALSO ATTENDED THE STOP THE SEWAGE RALLY AND SPOKE BRIEFLY, AND THEY HAD MEDIA THERE.

WE HAD OUR SOPHOMORE, SEAN WILBUR SPEAK LIVE ON KPBS, I BELIEVE IT WAS.

IT WAS AMAZING THAT YOU HAD STAFFERS FROM CONGRESSMAN PETERS'S OFFICE, FROM TASHA HORVATH'S OFFICE.

YOU HAD ALL THESE POLITICAL ENTITIES THERE.

YOU HAD THE MAYOR OF IB, YOU HAD CORONADO CITY COUNCIL, AND THIS RALLY CAME FROM OUR STUDENTS.

IT WAS OUR STOP THE SEWAGE CLUB THAT PUT THAT ON.

JUST INCREDIBLY PROUD OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND ADVOCATING AND REALLY RAISING THE VOICE BECAUSE MONEY IS STARTING TO BE ALLOCATED FOR THIS BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING IN COLLABORATION WITH OUTSIDE COMMUNITIES AS WELL.

I ATTENDED THE JAGATHON.

SUPER IMPRESSED PRINCIPAL KUHNS RAN THE ENTIRE THING.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR WATCH SAID AT THE END, NINE MILES. I DON'T KNOW.

>> [INAUDIBLE].

>> YEAH. [LAUGHTER] RAN THE ENTIRE THING.

[01:45:02]

THAT WAS IMPRESSIVE SPRINT AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH ONE.

THAT WAS A GREAT TIME.

THE PTO DID AMAZING JOB WITH THAT.

I WAS INVITED TO GO TO MS. CUMMINS CLASSROOM THIS PAST MONTH AND MADE DINOSAUR FOSSILS.

I GOT MY HANDS A LITTLE DIRTY WITH SOME SAND AND COFFEE GROUNDS AND HOT WATER, AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE, BUT THE KIDS GOT TO MAKE SOME FOSSILS, THEY ALL GOT TO BE PALEONTOLOGISTS FOR A LITTLE BIT.

THAT WAS EXCITING AND FUN.

THEN THIS MONTH, MY SITE VISIT WAS AT CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL, MET WITH MS. MELLINA, DID NOT GET TO SEE A DISSECTION, SO WE'LL ADD THAT TO THE LIST FOR NEXT TIME.

BUT WE DID GET TO GO INTO ONE OF THE MATH CLASSROOMS WHERE.

MR. CASTILLO WAS DOING A LESSON WHERE THE STUDENTS WERE ON THEIR COMPUTERS AND THEY WERE GRAPHING PARABOLAS, HYPERBOLES AND OTHER THINGS AND CREATING PICTURES OUT OF THEM.

THEY HAD TO LINE UP, AND IT WAS REALLY NEAT TO SEE THE INTEGRATION OF THE COMPUTER WITH THE MATH WITH SOME ARTISTIC ABILITY.

THAT WAS LOVELY TO SEE.

WE TOURED THE LIBRARY, AND I GOT TO OBSERVE LUNCHTIME, WHICH I NEVER SEE.

A LOT OF VOLLEYBALL HAPPENING.

THANK YOU FOR THAT. THAT WAS A GREAT TIME.

THAT'S IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.

[8.3 Superintendent's Comments]

>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEES FOR YOUR MONTHLY REPORTS.

I'M TRYING TO KEEP UP AND CHECKING THINGS OFF OF MY LIST, SO I'M NOT REPETITIVE.

I DO WANT TO THANK DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT SALAMANCA, AND HELICA PEREREZ FOR PUTTING TOGETHER THE SLIDES FOR THE BUDGET STUDY COMMITTEE.

I KNOW TWO OF OUR TRUSTEES WERE ABLE TO ATTEND.

ALSO REALLY WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WE HAD SIX MEMBERS OF OUR COLLEAGUES WITH THE ASSOCIATION OF CORONADO TEACHERS, THREE WHO ARE SERVING ON THE NEGOTIATIONS TEAM.

ELLEN CODY, BRIAN SCHMEIER CARRIE RAMIREZ CAME TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR BUDGET, BUT WE ALSO HAD THREE STAFF MEMBERS WHO ATTENDED TO ASK QUESTIONS AND LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR BUDGET AND A HANDFUL OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

THANK YOU TO OUR BUSINESS SERVICES DEPARTMENT FOR PUTTING THAT EVENT TOGETHER.

THE WORLD LANGUAGE AWARD CEREMONY.

IN MARCH, WE HELD OUR SECOND ANNUAL WORLD LANGUAGE AWARD CEREMONY, AND IT'S QUICKLY BECOMING ONE OF MY FAVORITES.

WE GET TO HONOR AND CELEBRATE.

I BELIEVE IT IS OUR ONLY K12 AWARD CEREMONY IN CUSD, WHERE WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE EFFORTS OF OUR WORLD LANGUAGE LEARNERS AT GRADE 5, GRADE 8, AND THOSE WHO ARE PURSUING AND HAVE MET ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THEIR STATE SEAL OF BI LITERACY.

I BELIEVE THE COUNT WAS 15 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES WE WERE ABLE TO CELEBRATE THAT EVENING ACROSS OUR DISTRICT WITH AN ENROLLMENT OF ABOUT 2,750 STUDENTS.

THAT'S PRETTY REMARKABLE.

AFTER THE EVENT, THE AWARD CEREMONY, ALL OF OUR GUESTS WERE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN OUT ON THE QUAD, WHERE WE HAD A CULTURAL FAIR WITH MANY OF THE 15 CULTURES THAT WERE REPRESENTED IN THE THEATER.

A MARIACHI BAND, FOOD, AND A LOT OF THE DIFFERENT CULTURAL TABLES HAD TREATS OR LITTLE ARTIFACTS FROM THOSE CULTURES TO CELEBRATE.

I DID JUST HEAR MR. SCHMEICHEL LAUGH IN THE BACKGROUND.

[LAUGHTER] BECAUSE, YES, WE HAD TWO MARIACHI BANDS.

ONE FROM SAN YSIDRO HIGH SCHOOL AND ONE FROM SOUTHWESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

THANK YOU TO OUR MARIACHI FRIENDS FOR COMING AS WELL, AND MY APOLOGIES FOR SAYING A MARIACHI BAND.

I DID WANT TO REPEAT IT, ALTHOUGH TRUSTEE YOUNGBLOOD MADE THE STATEMENT, THE COMMUNITY PARTNERS BOARD WORKSHOP.

UNFORTUNATELY, THAT WAS NOT ONE THAT WE HAD A LOT OF ATTENDANCE FROM OUR COMMUNITY.

THIS WAS A REQUEST THAT CAME FROM OUR GOVERNING BOARD.

BUT YOU HAVE OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS FROM ALL OF OUR PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATIONS, FROM ISF, CSF, EMERALD KEEPERS, SAFE HARBOR, JUST TO HEAR THE SYNERGY IN THE ROOM AND THE EXCITEMENT ABOUT HOW WE AS A COMMUNITY CAN CONTINUE STRENGTHENING THE SERVICES AND EXPERIENCES THROUGH INDIRECT AND DIRECT RESOURCES TO OUR DISTRICT.

THERE WAS A LOT OF ENERGY IN THE ROOM, AND BOY, IF WE COULD FILL OUR BOARD ROOM EVERY MONTH WITH THAT CELEBRATION OF THE COMMUNITY EFFORTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, I THINK OUR COMMUNITY WOULD REALLY BE AMAZED AT HOW MUCH EFFORT, ENERGY AND LOVE COMES INTO COMMUNITY TO MAKE OUR DISTRICT WHAT IT IS TODAY.

WE HAD A CTE LUNCHEON TO CELEBRATE THE TEACHERS OF

[01:50:03]

OUR CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM AT CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL THAT I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND.

OUR ANNUAL NGOTC, I LOVED THAT WE HAD TWO OF OUR SENIOR CADETS HERE.

ANNUALLY, THEY GO THROUGH A PASS AND REVIEW RECOGNITION CEREMONY WHERE THEY DISPLAY A LOT OF THE TACTICAL, LEADERSHIP AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT ARE EMBEDDED WITHIN ISLANDER COMPANY TO ACHIEVE DISTINGUISH UNIT, STATUS AND RECOGNITION.

THANKS TO ISLANDER COMPANY AND TO THE PARENTS IN THE ANCHOR CLUB WHO SUPPORT THOSE EFFORTS.

WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THE EMERALD KEEPERS PRESENTATION TO OUR NINTH AND 10TH GRADERS AND ABOUT THE ROCKY HEROIN PRESENTATION.

TWO AMAZING PARTNERSHIPS.

ROCKY HAS BEEN JOINING OUR DISTRICT ANNUALLY FOR THE PAST EIGHT YEARS.

HE HOSTS OFTEN ALL SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND ALSO PARENT EVENTS.

I WANTED TO BRING THOSE BACK UP BECAUSE THOSE TWO EXPERIENCES WERE COORDINATED BY PRINCIPAL MOLINA AND HER STAFF BECAUSE OUR JUNIORS WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF CASP TESTING.

OUR FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORES HAD A VERY ENGAGING AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE WHILE THEIR PEERS WERE IN TAKING THE CASP ASSESSMENTS.

THANK YOU, PRINCIPAL MOLINA AND PLEASE EXTEND THAT GRATITUDE TO YOUR STAFF FOR COORDINATING MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES FOR OUR KIDS DURING THAT.

WE CELEBRATED PRESIDENT PALACIOS PETERS AND HER HUSBAND RECEIVED THE ADMIRAL STOCKDALE AWARD.

JUST YESTERDAY WE RECEIVED FROM THE COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION PRINCIPAL FALAR.

I KNEW IT WAS PRINCIPAL BEANS AS WELL.

PRINCIPAL FALAR WAS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT ON LEADERSHIP ARTICLE FROM THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION TO HIGHLIGHT HER AND HER STAFF'S WORK AROUND PBIS AND COMMUNITY AND CULTURE BUILDING AT CORONADO MIDDLE SCHOOL.

CONGRATULATIONS, PRINCIPAL FALAR.

THANK YOU TO YOU AND TO ALL OF THE TRITONS FOR REPRESENTING US SO WELL ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS, BUT ALSO NOW AT THE COUNTY LEVEL.

SPEAKING OF SCIENCE, THIS MORNING I GOT TO HOLD A LITTLE BABY CHICKEN IN THE FIRST GRADE POD AT VILLAGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

THEY'RE DOING THEIR ANNUAL UNIT WHERE THEY INCUBATE EGGS, AND TO SEE THE EXCITEMENT FROM THE STAFF AND THE STUDENTS AS THOSE EGGS WERE HATCHING, PRETTY EXCITING.

ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT FOR ME THIS PAST MONTH, WAS THE ASB AT CMS HOSTS A MARCH MADNESS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT WHERE THE T3 ADVISORY CLASSES COMPETE AGAINST ONE ANOTHER.

TALK ABOUT AN EXCITING AFTERNOON OUT ON THE QUAD, I WAS ABLE TO WATCH, I BELIEVE THE SEVENTH AND THE EIGHTH GRADE T3 TEAMS IN THEIR COMPETITION GAME.

BUT WHAT A GREAT WAY TO CELEBRATE EACH OTHER AND TO BUILD COMMUNITY, AND SOME REALLY GREAT BASKETBALL WAS HAPPENING AS WELL.

I WANT TO JUST END ON THE THEME OF CONNECTIONS AND COMMUNITY.

I KNOW WE'VE DISCUSSED A LOT OF THAT THROUGH THE PRESENTATIONS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MEETING.

BUT THIS TRULY IS A SPECIAL COMMUNITY.

ALL FOUR OF OUR TEACHERS OF THE YEAR THIS YEAR HAVE CONNECTIONS TO THIS DISTRICT BEYOND TEACHING HERE.

WHETHER THEY ATTENDED HERE OR THEIR CHILDREN CURRENTLY OR HAVE ATTENDED HERE.

ALL FOUR OF OUR TEACHERS OF THE YEAR HAVE BEEN OR CURRENT CUSD PARENTS.

REALLY JUST PROUD OF THE RECOGNITION.
