[3. RECONVENE TO OPEN SESSION ]
THE TIME IS NOW FOUR O'CLOCK, AND WE ARE BACK FROM A CLOSED SESSION.ON ITEM 2.1, STUDENT MATTERS, ACTION WAS TAKEN BY THE BOARD, FIVE, ZERO.
ON ITEMS 2.2 AND 2.3, NO ACTION WAS TAKEN.
IF YOU COULD PLEASE STAND FOR THE PLEDGE TO THE AMERICAN FLAG. READY TO BEGIN.
ITEM 3.3, APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA.
ARE THERE ANY CHANGES TO THE AGENDA AT THIS TIME? IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AGENDA?
>> THANK YOU. I'M STILL CONNECTING. CALL FOR THE VOTE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR. AYE. ANY OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES FIVE, ZERO.
THERE I AM. ITEM 3.4 IS THE NOTIFICATION OF PUBLIC COMMENT PROTOCOLS.
YOU MAY QUEUE UP ON ANY ITEM WHEN IT IS CALLED AND NON-AGENDIZED PUBLIC COMMENTS WILL BE TAKEN TOWARDS THE END OF OUR BOARD MEETING UNDER ITEM 10.
ITEM 3.5. SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION, CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
IT'S A PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE AN OLD FRIEND FROM THE CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION AND FORMER DIRECTOR OF LEARNING, MS. CLAUDIA GALLANT. [APPLAUSE]
[LAUGHTER] GOOD AFTERNOON, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS, AND BOARD MEMBERS, AND ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, SUPERINTENDENT, MS MCELLIGOTT.
SO WONDERFUL TO SEE YOU ALL, BE BACK HERE.
I'M HERE REPRESENTING CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION WITH MY COLLEAGUE, SALLY PERLEY, WHO THIS YEAR IS THE CHAIR OF OUR EDUCATION COMMITTEE, AND SHE IS A BOARD MEMBER FOR CHA.
IT'S GREAT TO UPDATE OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT.
WE HAVE AN AMAZING PARTNERSHIP, CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION, WITH ALL CORONADO SCHOOLS AND WE'VE HAD THIS FOR AT LEAST 14 YEARS.
WHAT WE DO ARE A COUPLE OF SPECIAL PROGRAMS THAT WE'RE GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT THIS EVENING.
SALLY'S GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT ONE AND I'M GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE FIRST ONE.
WE HAVE, FOR A LONG TIME NOW, HAD A GREAT PARTNERSHIP, ESPECIALLY WITH OUR THIRD GRADERS.
THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA'S CURRICULUM FOR THIRD GRADE IS LOCAL HISTORY.
THERE IS NO WAY IN CALIFORNIA YOU COULD HAVE A LOCAL HISTORY TEXTBOOK, SO THE STATE ACTUALLY REALLY RELIES ON LOCAL HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS IN EACH AREA OF CALIFORNIA TO PARTNER WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO PROVIDE THAT LEARNING FOR OUR THIRD GRADERS.
WE'VE BEEN DOING THIS REALLY WELL FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS.
NOW, I'M HAPPY TO SAY, IT'S A DOCENT-BASED PROGRAM.
OUR DOCENTS ARE MOSTLY, I THINK ALL OF US, FORMER TEACHERS.
WE PROVIDE FOUR HOURS OF CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION IN THE SPRING TO EACH THIRD-GRADE CLASSROOM, AS WELL AS THE THIRD-GRADERS AT SACRED HEART AND CHRIST CHURCH.
WE HAVE NINE CLASSROOMS, USUALLY.
WE GO IN AND PROVIDE FOUR HOURS OF INSTRUCTION ON CORONADO HISTORY STARTING FROM THE KUMEYAAY ALL THE WAY UP TO THE PRESENT, AND WE INCLUDE SOME CIVICS STANDARDS AS WELL.
IT'S A REALLY WONDERFUL PROGRAM.
IT'S VERY HANDS-ON FOR OUR KIDS.
THEN WE FOLLOW UP WITH A WALKING FIELD TRIP WHERE KIDS COME UP TO OUR CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION MUSEUM.
WE HAVE INTERACTIVE HANDS-ON WHERE THEY GET TO TOUCH AND SEE REAL THINGS FROM OUR CORONADO PAST AND A TOUR OF THE HOTEL DEL BY THEIR HISTORIAN.
IT'S REALLY EXCITING. THIS YEAR, WE WILL HAVE VILLAGE SCHOOLS PROGRAM IN MARCH AND SILVER STRAND'S IN MAY.
SALLY'S GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT OUR CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM.
>> YES. OUR HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP OR INTERNS ARE GOING TO BE HELD THIS SPRING.
WE USUALLY DO IN THE FALL, BUT THIS SPRING, WE'RE DOING IT, AND WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING THE ISLAND ICONS.
THAT STARTED BACK IN PANDEMIC TIMES.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE STUDENTS RESEARCH AND CONDUCT ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEWS, WRITE ARTICLES FOR THE MAGAZINE, AND THEN DO A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION AT A RECEPTION FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS,
[00:05:03]
AND SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, AND TEACHERS, AND ANYONE THAT'S INTERESTED IN COMING.THIS IS A REALLY GREAT PROGRAM MOSTLY BECAUSE YOU ARE GETTING THOSE REAL-LIFE LESSONS, BUT ALSO IT'S AN INTERGENERATIONAL CONNECTIONS THAT ARE IMPORTANT AND THE CELEBRATING OF THAT SHARED SENSE OF PLACING COMMUNITY.
>> PEOPLE IDENTIFY ISLAND ICONS AND NOMINATE THEM TO CHA, AND THEN THOSE STUDENTS WILL BE PAIRED UP WITH AN INDIVIDUAL IN OUR COMMUNITY.
WE GET TO WRITE THAT ARTICLE AND IT'LL BE IN THE PAPER, SO IT'S REALLY REAL-LIFE LEARNING.
WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THESE PROGRAMS, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
COME SEE US AT CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION AND HAVE A GREAT 2025. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. [APPLAUSE]
>> ITEM 3.6, STATE OF THE DISTRICT, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
GOOD EVENING, TRUSTEES, MR. MADER, MR. SALAMANCA, MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY, AND STAFF.
IT'S AN HONOR TO PRESENT THE ANNUAL STATE OF THE DISTRICT ADDRESS.
I'M GOING TO ATTEMPT TO KEEP THIS BRIEF.
AS MANY OF YOU ARE AWARE, WHEN I GET GOING TALKING ABOUT OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, I CAN REALLY GET GOING. OUR DISTRICT PROFILE.
I'M GOING TO TOUCH ON SOME ITEMS THAT HAVE BEEN ALREADY PRESENTED IN VARIOUS REPORTS, BUT I DID FEEL IT WOULD BE IMPORTANT TO AT LEAST START WITH WHERE WE'RE AT WITH OUR ENROLLMENT AND DEMOGRAPHICS, 02,700 STUDENTS, APPROXIMATELY 40% MILITARY CONNECTED.
YOU SEE THE DEMOGRAPHIC BREAKDOWN THERE.
SOME NOTABLE CHANGES PRETTY STABLE OVER THE YEARS WITH TWO SHIFTS.
CLEARLY, WE, ALONGSIDE OTHER DISTRICTS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, HAVE EXPERIENCED DECLINING ENROLLMENT.
WHERE WE WERE AVERAGING CLOSE TO 3,100 STUDENTS PRIOR TO 2020, WE'RE NOW AT 2,740, AND OUR PERCENTAGE OF INTERDISTRICT TRANSFER STUDENTS OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS, HAS RANGED BETWEEN 12-19%.
OUR DISTRICT PROFILE IN ACADEMICS, WE'RE VERY PROUD.
WE HAVE A 98% GRADUATION RATE.
WE HAVE 12 STEM AND VISUAL AND PERFORMING ART PATHWAYS IN OUR DISTRICT, AND I'M GOING TO TOUCH ON OUR PATHWAYS A LITTLE BIT LATER IN THE PRESENTATION.
ONCE AGAIN, COMPARED WITH OTHER SAN DIEGO COUNTY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTS USING THE CAASPP TEST SCORES AS A MEASURE.
WE RANK NUMBER 1 IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, NUMBER 2 IN SCIENCE, AND NUMBER 2 IN MATH.
I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT PATHWAYS.
WE'RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT OUR FOCUS TO BUILDING PATHWAYS IN CUSD.
FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT REMEMBER, NINE YEARS AGO WHEN WE PRESENTED THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT, WE TALKED ABOUT OUR MISSION WAS TO CREATE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WE WANTED TO BECOME IN BASIC AID TODAY.
HOW CAN WE START TO BUILD AND STRENGTHEN EXPERIENCES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS STARTING IN ELEMENTARY ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND ALIGN EXPERIENCES WITH PURPOSE IN THE AREAS OF WORLD LANGUAGE, STEM, VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS? I'M PROUD TO SHARE. WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO DO JUST THAT.
SOME ITEMS OF NOTE LEARNED RECENTLY THAT OUR ENGINEERING PATHWAY AT CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL IS ADDING AN AEROSPACE ENGINEERING COURSE.
WE'RE ADDING A CAPSTONE COURSE FOR THE PATHWAYS OF ENGINEERING, ROBOTICS, AND SPORTS MEDICINE.
THOSE EXPERIENCES, IN GREAT DEAL, HAVE BEEN AFFORDED TO OUR STUDENTS THROUGH CREATIVE FINANCING AND PARTNERSHIPS.
WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO WHAT WE'RE DOING TODAY WITHOUT OUR [INAUDIBLE] GRANTS, WITHOUT OUR PARTNERS AT THE CORONADO SCHOOLS FOUNDATION, AND WITHOUT REALLY MANAGING OUR BUDGET AND STRATEGICALLY SPENDING DOWN OUR RESERVE TO ENSURE WE'RE NOT GOING TO PLACE PAUSE ON WHAT WE BELIEVE IS RIGHT FOR STUDENTS UNTIL WE REACH BASIC AID.
THAT'S GOING TO BE A THEME THROUGHOUT THE EVENING WITH THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT.
WHAT IS THE STATE OF OUR DISTRICT? YOU HAVE HEARD FROM OUR LEARNING DEPARTMENT ABOUT OUR ASSESSMENT SCORES.
YOU'VE LEARNED FROM DEPUTY SALAMANCA ABOUT OUR BUDGET.
YOU HEAR FROM OUR PRINCIPALS ABOUT SOME OF THE MICRO DATA THAT'S HAPPENING AT OUR VARIOUS SCHOOL SITES.
THIS EVENING, WE'LL HEAR FROM PRINCIPAL MOORE, DATES FROM SILVER STRAND.
THIS EVENING IS ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE, HOW WE'RE CONNECTING ALL OF THESE DOTS.
COMMUNITY-FUNDED BASIC AID IS NOW OUR REALITY.
[00:10:03]
WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO REALLY SAY THAT, BUT THIS YEAR'S BUDGET CYCLE INCLUDES YEAR 3, AND THAT'S BASIC AID.I'M GOING TO TOUCH ON THAT IN A FEW MOMENTS.
FOR THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, AGAIN, WE'VE BEEN DELIBERATELY BUILDING FOUNDATIONS FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WE WANT TO BECOME WHEN WE'RE IN BASIC AID.
I'M PROUD TO SAY THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF, OUR CERTIFICATED STAFF, AND OUR ADMINISTRATION, WE HAVE NOT WAVERED ON THAT.
THE BOARD'S COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENCES FOR OUR STUDENTS HAVE NOT BEEN PLACED ON HOLD.
WE'RE ENTERING INTO A NEW REALITY.
THE REALITY OF BASIC AID CAN BE A GAME CHANGER, BUT WE NEED TO PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
THE FIVE OF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO, OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS, LOOK CRITICALLY AT DECISIONS THAT YOU'RE MAKING WITH A FOOT IN EACH WORLD.
HOW ARE WE PRIORITIZING PROGRAMS FOR OUR STUDENTS TODAY? WITH AN UNDERSTANDING THAT THE RULES FOR HOW WE'RE GOING TO BE FUNDED WILL CHANGE SIGNIFICANTLY IN 2027.
IT'S AN EXCITING TIME, BUT IT PRESENTS SOME UNIQUE CHALLENGES AND A LOT OF COMPETING INTERESTS.
THE FIVE OF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BE PURPOSEFUL IN YOUR PLANNING AS YOU GUIDE US THROUGH THIS TRANSITION.
THERE'S A SAYING THAT MR. SALAMANCA USES WITHIN HIS DEPARTMENTS.
WE CAN DO ANYTHING, BUT WE CAN'T DO EVERYTHING.
I THINK THAT THERE ARE EXPECTATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN BUILT UP ABOUT BASIC AID.
WHEN WE REACH BASIC AID, WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO EVERYTHING.
WE NEED TO START TO TEMPER SOME OF THOSE EXPECTATIONS AND BE VERY DELIBERATE AND HOW WE'RE PRIORITIZING OUR RESOURCES AND WHERE THEY FIT WITHIN INITIATIVES THAT GUIDE OUR WORK TODAY AS THEY WILL CONTINUE TO GUIDE OUR WORK WHEN WE REACH COMMUNITY-FUNDED OR BASIC AID STATUS.
THIS IS NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST.
WE HAVE A LOT OF VISION DOCUMENTS.
WE HAVE A LOT OF NORTH STARS THAT WE USE.
IN ALL OF OUR DEPARTMENTS, IN OUR CLASSROOMS, WE HAVE NORTH STARS.
I PULLED OUT FOUR FOR THIS EVENING.
WE HAVE OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH SCHOOL SAFETY OPERATIONS.
THE BOARD DIRECTED THE SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF TO GET AN INDEPENDENT AUDIT OF OUR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND OUR SCHOOL SAFETY OPERATIONS PLAN DOES JUST THAT.
THAT DOCUMENT GUIDES OUR DECISIONS AS WE LOOK CRITICALLY AT EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PROCEDURES IN OUR DISTRICT, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE AREA OF SAFETY, AND IN FACILITIES UPGRADES.
OUR NCUST REALLY GUIDES OUR INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES WITHIN THE CLASSROOM.
AGAIN, AN INDEPENDENT GROUP CAME IN.
EDUCATORS FROM SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY, EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELDS CAME IN AND AUDITED OUR INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES AND PROVIDED US WITH A BLUEPRINT ON HOW WE CAN STRATEGICALLY MOVE FORWARD IN THE NINE AREAS THAT THEY ASSESSED.
WE RECENTLY COMPLETED A PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE PROGRAM.
THAT'S A VERY COMPREHENSIVE AND LENGTHY PROCESS.
MANY OF YOU WERE INVOLVED IN THAT.
MANY OF THE PEOPLE BEHIND ME WERE INVOLVED IN THAT.
THAT'S GOING TO SET VISION IN THREE AREAS, A PORTRAIT OF OUR GRADUATE, A PORTRAIT OF THE ADULTS WITHIN OUR ORGANIZATION, AND A PORTRAIT OF OUR SYSTEMS. WHERE ARE WE HEADED? WHERE DO WE WANT TO GO? WHAT DO WE WANT TO BECOME? THAT'S THE PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE.
OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, OUR BUDGET PHILOSOPHY HAS BEEN THE BRIDGE TO BASIC AID.
HOW WILL WE REACH BASIC AID WITH ENOUGH IN OUR RESERVES TO MEET THE MANDATORY 3%? FORTUNATELY, BY THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH, I BELIEVE WE'RE GOING TO GET THERE.
IT'S TIME FOR US TO CREATE A NEW FINANCIAL DECISION-MAKING DOCUMENT THAT WILL GUIDE OUR WORK, THAT WILL PROVIDE THAT NORTH STARS THAT WE NEED AS YOU LOOK THROUGH DECISIONS THAT COME TO YOU, HOW DOES THIS FIT WITHIN THE GREATER DIRECTION AND OBJECTIVES OF THE GOVERNING BOARD, AND HOW IS IT ALIGNED WITH THESE INITIATIVES THAT WE'VE PUT IN PLACE TO BUILD THE DISTRICT THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE DESERVING OF.
PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE, I WANT TO TOUCH ON THIS BRIEFLY.
IT'S A BLUEPRINT FOR OUR FUTURE.
IT TOOK OVER A YEAR FOR US TO CREATE.
WE'RE CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF IDENTIFYING A TEAM OF EDUCATORS TO SERVE ON A STRATEGIC PLANNING TEAM TO START TO IMPLEMENT A LOT OF THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OUTLINED IN THE PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE WORK, BUT I THINK IT'S FAIR TO SAY, OUR COMMUNITY HAD NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE.
WE RECEIVED OVER 60,000 DATA POINTS IN THE CREATION OF THESE THREE PORTRAITS, EDUCATOR OR ADULT SYSTEM AND STUDENT.
[00:15:02]
THE THREE PORTRAITS ARE REPRESENTED UP HERE.I'M NOT GOING TO READ ALL OF THESE, BUT EACH PORTRAIT HAS A LIST OF TANGIBLE GOALS THAT WE WILL BEGIN STRIVING TOWARDS.
SOME, WE ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE AND WE JUST NEED TO STRENGTHEN AND BE MORE PURPOSEFUL IN OUR EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE THE VISION THAT WAS SET THROUGH THIS PROCESS.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO MANAGE OUR BUDGET AS WE TRANSITION TO A COMMUNITY-FUNDED OR A BASIC AID DISTRICT? AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, THIS BUDGET CYCLE IS THE FIRST ONE THAT INCLUDES YEAR 1 OF BASIC AID.
WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. WE HAVE A PROJECTED OR ANTICIPATED INCREASE IN REVENUE TO THE TUNE OF $8-$10 MILLION, BUT BUDGETING WITHIN BASIC AID IS VASTLY DIFFERENT THAN LCFF.
WE RECEIVE FUNDING TWICE, AND WE NEED TO BE VERY INTENTIONAL IN ACKNOWLEDGING, WE'RE GOING TO LAND IN BASIC AID.
OUR BRIDGE IS GOING TO GET US TO BASIC AID WITH THE 3% IN OUR RESERVES THAT WE NEED.
WE WILL NEED MORE OF THAT TO COVER AT MINIMUM TWO MONTHS, BUT UP TO SIX MONTHS OF REVENUE IN OUR OPERATING BUDGET BASED OFF OF THE FUNDING THAT WE WILL RECEIVE IN THIS NEW MODEL.
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT WE NEED TO START FOCUSING ON? HOW ARE WE STILL ALLOCATING OUR CURRENT RESOURCES TO MAINTAIN QUALITY EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS TODAY? WE NEED TO STILL PRIORITIZE OUR CURRENT THIRD-GRADE STUDENTS AND NOT SAY, WE'RE GOING TO SUSPEND EVERYTHING THAT WE'RE DOING UNTIL WE REACH BASIC AID.
WE NEED TO START TO MANAGE STAFF AND COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONS ABOUT THIS PERIOD OF TRANSITION.
WE NEED TO CONTINUE SPENDING DOWN OUR RESERVES AS PART OF OUR BUDGET PHILOSOPHY WRITTEN ON THE BACK WALL TO ENSURE THAT WE REACH BASIC AID WITH THE MINIMUM, AND THEN WE NEED TO MAKE STRATEGIC DECISIONS TODAY.
WHEN WE START GOING THROUGH OUR RESOURCES, WHERE DO THEY FALL WITHIN OUR VISION? ARE THEY IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE DIRECTION THAT THE FIVE OF YOU HAVE SET AND THAT WE'VE INVESTED TIME AND RESOURCES IN CREATING?
>> WE HAD A LIVING FINANCIAL DOCUMENT IN BOARD POLICY.
BOARD POLICY 3050, FOR DECADES, WAS A GUIDING DOCUMENT IN WHICH BOARD-LEVEL FINANCIAL DECISIONS WERE REACHED.
IT WAS UPDATED ORIGINALLY IN 2013 IN THE WAKE OF THE GREAT RECESSION TO REALLY SET OUR PRIORITIES FOR EXPENDITURES IN OUR DISTRICT.
AS OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES EVOLVED, SO DID THE BOARD POLICY.
THAT POLICY IS GOING TO HAVE TO EVOLVE AGAIN.
IT'S GOING TO HAVE TO BE UPDATED TO REFLECT OUR NEW REALITY.
WHAT IS THIS? IT WILL SERVE AS A GUIDING DOCUMENT.
THIS WILL BE OUR NORTH STAR AND HOW WE'RE SPENDING DOWN OUR CURRENT REVENUE AND OUR CURRENT RESERVES IN ORDER TO REACH BASIC AID WITHOUT SACRIFICING PROGRAMS FOR OUR STUDENTS.
BUT AS WE REACH BASIC AID, WE STILL NEED TO FILTER DECISIONS THROUGH TO ENSURE THAT THEY'RE STRATEGIC, THEY'RE PURPOSEFUL, AND THAT THEY'RE IN ALIGNMENT WITH SOME OF THE INTERESTS THAT WE'VE IDENTIFIED AS CRITICAL FOR OUR STUDENTS AND FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
THERE ARE COMPETING INTERESTS.
IF YOU ASK YOUR NEIGHBORS, WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IN BASIC AID, WE HEAR EVERYTHING FROM AIR CONDITIONING IN EVERY CLASSROOM, SOLAR PANELING ON OUR ROOFS, WE'LL BE THE HIGHEST-PAID STAFF IN THE COUNTY, WE'LL HAVE GUARD DOGS AND METAL DETECTORS.
BUT WE CAN DO ANYTHING, BUT WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S DONE WITH INTENT AND PURPOSE.
WE HAVE SO MUCH TO BE PROUD OF, WE HAVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS TO EXCEL.
WE HAVE A COURSE OF STUDY WHERE OUR STUDENTS WHEN THEY GRADUATE FROM CUSD CAN POSITION THEMSELVES TO COMPETE AGAINST THE ELITE SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, TO PURSUE THEIR PASSIONS IN THEIR INTERESTS BEYOND THE WALLS OF 650D AVENUE.
WE NEED TO CONTINUE THAT FOCUS.
STARTING IN KINDERGARTEN, HOW ARE WE ENGAGING OUR STUDENTS IN THE AREAS OF ENGINEERING? IN WORLD LANGUAGE, HOW ARE WE EXPOSING THEM TO CULTURE? HOW ARE WE BUILDING A COURSE OF STUDY THROUGH OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, INTO OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL, SO WHEN THEY GET TO THE HIGH SCHOOL, THEY HAVE A MENU OF OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL PROPEL THEM FOR THEIR FUTURE? WE'VE DONE A DARN GOOD JOB WITH THAT.
FOR A SCHOOL OUR SIZE, THE AP COURSE OF STUDY THAT WE HAVE, THE PATHWAY PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE.
WE HAVE AN AWARD-WINNING CORONADO SCHOOL OF THE ARTS.
WE HAVE STRENGTHENED OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH SOUTHWESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, AND WE'RE OFFERING MORE AND MORE DUAL-CREDIT COURSES FOR OUR STUDENTS TO TAKE.
WE HAVE INTERNSHIP PARTNERSHIPS WITH PEOPLE ON THE ISLAND AND OFF THE ISLAND.
[00:20:02]
MS. GALA JUST SPOKE ABOUT THE CORONADO HISTORICAL FOUNDATION.WE HAVE INTERNS LEARNING REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE IN INTERNSHIPS AND WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMS, ALL PART OF OUR VISION TO ENSURE THAT WHEN STUDENTS WALK ACROSS THAT STAGE, THEY AT LEAST ARE MAKING PURPOSEFUL DECISIONS ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT TO DO AND HOW THEY WANT TO APPROACH THEIR FUTURE.
WHEN I THINK ABOUT OUR DISTRICT AND WHERE WE'RE AT TODAY, IT'S SO EXCITING.
BUT I DON'T WANT THAT TO DIMINISH THE WORK THAT WE'VE DONE TO GET HERE.
THE DIFFICULT DECISIONS THAT THIS BOARD HAS HAD TO MAKE REGARDING OUR BUDGET.
THE NEGOTIATIONS WITH OUR FACULTY ASSOCIATIONS AND THEN REPAIRING SOME OF THOSE RELATIONSHIPS THAT BECAME CONTENTIOUS, REPAIRING THAT.
EVERYONE THAT WORKS IN THIS DISTRICT IS PROUD TO BE HERE, THEY'RE COMMITTED TO OUR STUDENTS, AND THEY WANT TO FOLLOW OUR MISSION AND OUR VISION STATEMENT, TO INSPIRE, INNOVATE, AND CREATE LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES TO THRIVE.
IF YOU WANT TO BE A WOODWORKER, IF YOU WANT TO GO INTO THE MILITARY, IF YOU WANT TO GO DIRECTLY INTO THE WORKFORCE, OR YOU WANT TO ATTEND ONE OF THE MOST ELITE PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITIES IN OUR NATION, WE HAVE A HOME FOR YOU AND WE HAVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU.
WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO CREATE THESE EXPERIENCES, AND WE'RE AT THE FINISH LINE WHERE WE CAN REALLY EXPAND, STRENGTHEN, AND JUST TAKE WHAT WE'VE ALREADY DONE.
WE HAVE OUR GUIDING DOCUMENTS.
WE KNOW THE VISION, WE NEED TO EXECUTE IT AT THIS POINT.
THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT IS SOUND.
I'M PROUD TO REPRESENT CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE STAFF AND STUDENTS THAT CALL OUR COMMUNITY HOME.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME.
>> THANK YOU, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT?
>> SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER, THAT IT'S OUTSTANDING WITH THE WORK THAT YOU AND THE TEAM HAVE DONE.
I WOULD JUST LIKE TO EMPHASIZE, AGAIN, FOR EVERYONE'S REFERENCE, THE EXPECTATION SETTING.
THIS COMMUNITY HAS NEVER SEEN FUNDING LIKE THIS AT LEAST SINCE 1985, AND MAYBE NOT EVEN THEN.
IT'S GOING TO BE IMPORTANT TO BE STRATEGICALLY ALIGNED, WE'RE ALREADY LOOKING AT THAT, AND TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE'VE BEEN ROUGHLY DEFICIT-SPENDING IN THE TUNE OF AROUND $6 MILLION A YEAR ANYWAY.
WHEN YOU LOOK AT 10, 10 BECOMES FOUR, THAT'S STILL SUBSTANTIAL, BUT ALIGNING THOSE TO STRATEGICALLY ALIGN IT, AND THEN HAVING TO BUILD UP THE RESERVES.
IF YOU'RE USED TO GETTING A PAYCHECK EVERY TWO WEEKS, THAT'S ONE WAY TO BUDGET.
BUT WHEN YOU GET ONE TWICE A YEAR, THAT'S ANOTHER WAY THAT YOU HAVE TO BUDGET AND THE CASH RESERVES YOU HAVE TO DO.
THERE ARE GOING TO BE SOME AMAZING AND EXCITING TIMES.
BUT WE'RE GOING TO EASE OUR WAY INTO IT.
THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME VERY IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER THERE.
I JUST HAD A QUESTION REAL QUICKLY ON THE PATHWAYS, AND I'M SORRY FOR NOT ASKING THIS EARLIER.
FOR THE HIGH SCHOOLERS, THEY CAN DRIVE A STEM PATHWAY.
ARE THESE BUILT-IN CURRICULUM THAT THEY COULD FOLLOW ALMOST LIKE IF YOU WERE IN COLLEGE AND YOU'RE GOING TO BE AN ENGINEER AND YOU WENT THAT WAY.
IS THAT THE INTENT, AND IS THERE A WAY FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE MAYBE MORE LIBERAL ARTS THAT WANT TO TRY? YOU'RE NOT CERTAINLY COMMITTED, ARE YOU, OR JUST DESIGN PATHWAY?
>> THE WAY OUR PATHWAYS ARE ORGANIZED, AND I KNOW PRINCIPAL MELLINA HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO CELEBRATE PATHWAYS IN NOVEMBER, THEY ARE A SEQUENCE OF COURSES THAT BUILD UPON EACH OTHER.
BUT WE DO HAVE STUDENTS THAT TAKE SOME OF OUR PATHWAY COURSES IN AN A LA CARTE FASHION.
>> OKAY. BUT IT IS SIMILAR TO WHAT YOU WOULD DO THEN IN COLLEGE.
IF YOU KNOW I KNOW I WANT TO BE THIS AND HERE'S THE BEST WAY TO GET YOU THERE TO PREPARE YOU FOR THE MOST COMPETITIVE ENGINEERING OR JUILLIARD SCHOOL OF MUSIC OR WHEREVER YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO?
[4. CONSOLIDATED MOTION FOR CONSENT CALENDAR]
>> ITEM 4, CONSOLIDATED MOTION FOR CONSENT CALENDAR.
IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 4 AT THIS TIME? BOARD, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON ITEM 4? IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSOLIDATED MOTION?
>> CALL FOR THE VOTE. DID YOU GET A? OKAY. [LAUGHTER]
>> IF YOU HAVE BEEN NEWLY ELECTED, YOU DON'T HAVE TO. [LAUGHTER]
>> IT'S CALLED HAZING. [LAUGHTER] MOTION PASSES.
[5.1 Public Hearing on the Association of Coronado Teachers (ACT) Initial Proposals for Negotiations to the Coronado Unified School District (CUSD).]

TRUSTEES, ANY COMMENTS ON ITEM 5.2? ITEM 6.1, APPROVE BUSINESS SERVICES RESOLUTION 25-01-01. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
[6.1 Approve Business Services Resolution 25-01-01 to Increase Statutory School Fees Imposed on New Residential and Commercial/Industrial Development Projects Pursuant to Education Code Section 17620]
>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
I KNOW THE COMMUNITY AND THE BOARD HAVE HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO REVIEW THIS ACTION ITEM.
I'M GOING TO TURN THIS OVER TO DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT SALAMANCA.
>> THANK YOU, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
JUST A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE ITEM.
THE STATE ALLOCATION BOARD SETS AN AMOUNT THAT DISTRICTS ARE ABLE TO LEVY WITH REGARDS TO MITIGATION OR DEVELOPER FEES.
BRIEF HISTORY ON DEVELOPER FEES, THESE ARE THE FEES THAT HOMEOWNERS OR PROPERTY OWNERS LIVING OR OWNING PROPERTY WITHIN THE DISTRICT, IF THEY'RE ADDING LIVABLE SQUARE FOOTAGE OR ADDITIONAL SQUARE FOOTAGE BEYOND WHAT EXISTS TODAY, THERE'S THIS NEXUS BETWEEN STUDENT ENROLLMENT AND ADDITIONAL SQUARE FOOTAGE, AND THESE FEES ARE MEANT TO PROVIDE MONIES TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO EITHER PREPARE FOR A FUTURE EXPANSION OF THEIR SCHOOL DISTRICTS OR PAY FOR PAST EXPANSION IN ANTICIPATION OF THE ADDITIONAL STUDENTS.
A JUSTIFICATION STUDY IS REQUIRED TO BE CONDUCTED AT LEAST EVERY FIVE YEARS IN ORDER FOR US TO BE ABLE TO LEVY THE MAXIMUM ELIGIBLE DEVELOPER FEE THAT WE CAN CHARGE IN ACCORDANCE WITH SAB NUMBERS.
THE DEVELOPER FEE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED, AND WE'VE INCLUDED THAT IN THE AGENDA ITEM THIS EVENING.
IN APPROVING THIS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO LEVY THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF DEVELOPER FEES TO SUPPORT CURRENTLY WHAT FUNDS PREVIOUSLY ISSUED DEBT BY WAY OF CERTIFICATES OF PARTICIPATION.
OUR RECOMMENDATION THIS EVENING IS THAT THE BOARD APPROVE THE RESOLUTION AND THE NEW RATES WILL TAKE EFFECT 60 DAYS AFTER THE DATE OF ADOPTION.
>> THANK YOU. IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 6.1 AT THIS TIME? TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON ITEM 6.1?
>> QUICK QUESTION. UNDER NEW FUNDING, ONCE WE MAKE THAT TRANSITION, THIS IS INDEPENDENT OF SAY, BEING ON LCAP FUNDING OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT? THIS WILL CONTINUE. THIS WILL BE A FUNDING STREAM.
>> THIS IS SEPARATE, IT'S APART FROM LCFF OR BASIC AID [OVERLAPPING].
>> I DID READ WITH INTEREST THAT IN THE ESTIMATED COST OF A NEW HIGH SCHOOL, IT WAS $517, SO THAT FAR EXCEEDS WHAT ONE WOULD THINK YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO ALLOCATE WITH BASIC AID MONEY.
THAT'S A AWE-INSPIRING NUMBER RIGHT THERE. THANK YOU.
IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE ITEM 6.1?
>> THANK YOU. CALL FOR THE VOTE.
[6.2 Accept the Annual Audit for the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2024]
ACCEPT THE ANNUAL AUDIT FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30TH, 2024. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
ONCE AGAIN, THIS IS AN ACTION ITEM TO ACCEPT THE ANNUAL AUDIT.
I'M GOING TO TURN THIS BACK OVER TO DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT SALAMANCA.
>> THANK YOU, AGAIN, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
I WILL SHARE OUR AUDITORS REGRETS THAT THEY'RE UNABLE TO ATTEND THE BOARD MEETING THIS EVENING, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE,
[00:30:04]
ALL OF THE STATE AUDIT REPORTS ARE DUE ON DECEMBER 15TH, AND THERE ARE A NUMBER OF DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE THAT ARE PRESENTING THEIR AUDIT REPORTS.I HOPE YOU WILL BEAR WITH ME, AND I WILL SHARE THE INFORMATION AND THE RESULTS OF THEIR REPORT.
AS YOU KNOW, EDUCATION CODE REQUIRES THAT SCHOOL DISTRICTS ENGAGE THE SERVICES OF AN INDEPENDENT EXTERNAL AUDITOR ORGANIZATION.
WE CONTRACT WITH EIDE BAILLY, AND THEY ARE OPINING ON THE DISTRICT'S FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2024.
ESSENTIALLY, IF YOU WANT TO SKIP TO THE END OF THE MOVIE, THE RESULTS OF THE AUDITOR'S FINDINGS CAN BE LOCATED ON PAGE 98 OF THE AUDIT REPORT, WHICH IS INCLUDED IN THE AGENDA ITEM THIS EVENING.
THEY ARE REQUIRED TO ISSUE REPORTS AND OPINIONS IN THREE MAJOR AREAS: THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AS A WHOLE, FEDERAL COMPLIANCE AND STATE-LEVEL COMPLIANCE.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT OPINIONS THAT THEY'RE ABLE TO ISSUE, WITH UNMODIFIED BEING THE BEST POSSIBLE THAT A DISTRICT CAN GET.
I'M PROUD TO SHARE THAT THE AUDITORS OPINED THAT THE DISTRICT'S FINANCIAL STATEMENTS RECEIVED AN UNMODIFIED OPINION, THAT'S THE BEST THAT YOU CAN HAVE.
THERE WERE NO MATERIAL WEAKNESSES OR SIGNIFICANT DEFICIENCIES THAT THEY IDENTIFIED, AND THERE WERE NO AUDIT ADJUSTMENTS IMPACTING OUR FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
ESSENTIALLY, WHAT WE PRESENTED TO YOU ALL IN SEPTEMBER, JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO, TO BE OUR YEAR-ENDING FINANCIALS WERE SUPPORTED AND AFFIRMED BY THE DISTRICT'S EXTERNAL AUDITORS.
THE NEXT OPINION THAT THEY'RE REQUIRED TO SHARE HAS TO DO WITH FEDERAL AWARDS.
AS YOU KNOW, THE DISTRICT RECEIVED SEVERAL FEDERAL GRANTS, EACH WITH DIFFERENT STRINGS AND COMPLIANCE ITEMS TIED TO THEM.
WE ALSO ARE PROUD TO SHARE THAT WE RECEIVED AN UNMODIFIED OPINION AS IT RELATES TO OUR FEDERAL AWARDS, NO FINDINGS, AND WE CONTINUE TO BE CLASSIFIED AS A LOW-RISK AUDITEE.
VERY PROUD OF OUR TEAM FOR THAT ADDITIONAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
THE LAST ITEM THAT THEY OPINE ON IS AS IT RELATES TO STATE COMPLIANCE, THEY DID IDENTIFY A MATERIAL WEAKNESS AS IT RELATES TO STATE COMPLIANCE, AND THEY SHARED, AND I WILL SAY, BUT FOR THAT ONE ITEM, THEY ALSO ISSUED AN UNMODIFIED REPORT.
THE ONE PROGRAM AREA, AND WE KNEW THAT THIS WOULD BE THE CASE, THAT THEY OPINED A FINDING ON HAD TO DO WITH THE EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE AUDIT REPORT, THEY PROVIDE THE RATIONALE AND THE INFORMATION AS IT RELATES TO HOW THE FINDING CAME TO BE AND THE DISTRICT'S RESPONSE.
IN SUMMARY AND IN SHORT, THIS IS A BRANDING PROGRAM THAT SCHOOL DISTRICTS RECEIVED ACROSS THE STATE.
THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF AMBIGUITY AS IT RELATES TO HOW TO GO ABOUT IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM.
OF COURSE, THEY GAVE US THE MONEY, THEY DIDN'T TELL US THE RULES UPFRONT, BUT THERE WERE SIGNIFICANT RISK OF PENALTIES, FINANCIALLY, IF YOU WERE FOUND TO BE OUT OF NON-COMPLIANCE.
AT THE TIME THAT WE ISSUED THESE MONIES, THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE THAT IT WOULD BE AN ONGOING PROGRAM THAT WOULD CONTINUE FUNDING.
AS A DISTRICT, WE MADE THE DECISION NOT TO IMPLEMENT THE PROGRAM.
WE WANTED TO WAIT UNTIL ALL OF THE RULES CAME IN, GIVEN WHERE WE ARE WITH THIS BRIDGE TO BASIC AID, WE DIDN'T WANT TO RISK HAVING TO SEND MORE MONEY THAN WE ACTUALLY RECEIVED IN GRANT FUNDING.
IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT WITH THE EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES GRANT PROGRAM, ELO-P, THIS DOES NOT REPRESENT MONIES THAT WE COULD HAVE USED IN OTHER AREAS OF THE BUDGET, IT'S SPECIFICALLY TO START UP NEW PROGRAMS AND SUPPORT THAT NEW PROGRAM.
IN SENDING THE MONEY BACK, THE STATE GAVE US THE MONEY, WE'RE JUST SENDING IT RIGHT BACK TO THEM.
I'M ALSO ABLE TO SHARE THIS EVENING NOW THAT THIS HAS BEEN FULLY APPROPRIATED ON AN ONGOING BASIS, WE'RE FULLY IN COMPLIANCE WITH THIS NEW PROGRAM BEGINNING IN THE '24-'25 SCHOOL YEAR, AND WE'RE ON TARGET TO CLEAR THIS AUDIT FINDING MOVING FORWARD.
I'M AVAILABLE FOR ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE.
>> THANK YOU. IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 6.2 AT THIS TIME? TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU FOR CLARIFYING THE MATERIAL WEAKNESS.
I DID SEE THAT AND I DID ASK SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER EARLIER TODAY TO CLARIFY THAT.
I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WEREN'T HAVING TO LOSE ANY MONEY.
THANK YOU FOR THAT ROBUST EXPLANATION OF THAT.
>> THANK YOU, DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT, FOR THE REPORT AND ALL THE WORK THAT YOU AND YOUR STAFF HAVE DONE ON THE BUDGET, AND I SEE THIS REPORT AS YET ANOTHER VALIDATION OF THE NUMBERS, WHICH IS WHAT IT'S INTENDED TO BE.
I KNOW OVER THE PAST YEAR THERE'S BEEN SOME QUESTION OR CONTROVERSY,
[00:35:03]
BUT I THINK THAT YOUR PRONOUNCEMENTS AND PREDICTIONS HAVE BEEN ONCE AGAIN VALIDATED.OBVIOUSLY, WHEN YOU GO INTO ANY KIND OF DISAGREEMENT OR NEGOTIATIONS ABOUT HOW WE'RE GOING TO SPEND MONEY, THE FIRST THING THAT WE NEED TO AGREE ON IS HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TO BEGIN WITH, AND THEN PEOPLE CAN START PLACING PRIORITIES AND DECIDING HOW THAT WOULD GET ALLOCATED.
ONCE AGAIN, THIS VALIDATES THE STARTING OFFER, WHICH IS HOW MUCH WE HAVE TO WORK WITH. THANK YOU FOR THAT.
>> IS THERE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THE ANNUAL AUDIT FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2024?
ITEM 6.3, HUMAN RESOURCES RESOLUTION FOR A 180-DAY WAIT PERIOD,
[6.3 Human Resources Resolution for 180-day wait period exception with CalPERS.]
EXCEPTION WITH KEL PER. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER?>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
I KNOW YOU'VE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW THIS ACTION ITEM.
I HAVE ASKED DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES, MISS DONNA TRIPI, TO COME UP AND RESPOND TO ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE AND PRESENT YOU WITH AN OVERVIEW OF ACTION ITEM 6.3.
>> THANK YOU, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
THE DISTRICT WILL LIKE TO HIRE RHONDA GEARHART AS A RETIRED ANNUITANT TO FILL A CRITICAL NEED IN THE DISTRICT FOR SUBSTITUTE INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS.
THE RESOLUTION IS TO HIRE HER PRIOR TO THE 180-DAY WAIT PERIOD NORMALLY REQUIRED BEFORE A RETIREE CAN COMMENCE WORK.
IT'S DIFFICULT FOR THE DISTRICT TO FIND CLASSIFIED SUBSTITUTES TO TAKE ON INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT ROLES, AND WE OFTEN HIRE CERTIFICATED SUBSTITUTES TO FILL THAT NEED.
RHONDA WILL HELP US FILL IT WHEN SHE IS AVAILABLE, AND SO HER WAIT PERIOD IS UP MARCH 26TH, SO THIS WOULD BE HIRING HER TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF THAT.
>> IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 6.3? TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? I JUST LIKE TO THANK MISS GEARHART FOR HER WILLINGNESS TO COME BACK AND HELP US OUT.
IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE ITEM 6.3? CALL FOR THE VOTE, PLEASE.
[6.4 Acknowledge receipt of the Association of Coronado Teachers (ACT) Initial Proposal for Negotiations to the Coronado Unified School District (CUSD).]
ACKNOWLEDGE RECEIPT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF CORONADO TEACHERS' INITIAL PROPOSAL FOR NEGOTIATIONS TO THE CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER?>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
AS THE GOVERNING BOARD UNDERSTANDS, THIS CAME FORWARD AT OUR LAST MEETING.
MISS TRIPI IS AVAILABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE, AND MISS TRIPI, FEEL FREE IF YOU'D LIKE TO PROVIDE FURTHER CONTEXT.
ONCE AGAIN, THIS WAS PRESENTED TO THE BOARD IN DECEMBER.
THIS HAS NOW COME BACK AS AN ACTION ITEM. MISS TRIPI?
>> THEY HAD THREE PROPOSALS TO OPEN THREE ARTICLES: SALARY, DUAL ENROLLMENT, AND LEAVES, AND THEY PRESENTED THAT IN DECEMBER.
TONIGHT WAS THE PUBLIC HEARING TO AFFORD THE PUBLIC AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT ON THOSE PROPOSALS.
THEN TONIGHT, THE ACTION FOR YOU IS TO ACKNOWLEDGE RECEIPT OF THE INITIAL PROPOSALS.
YOU NOTICE TONIGHT, WE MADE OUR INITIAL PROPOSALS IN TWO AREAS, HEALTH AND WELFARE AND CALENDAR.
NEXT MONTH, YOU WILL BE HAVING THE PUBLIC HEARING ON THOSE ARTICLES, AND THEN ACKNOWLEDGING RECEIPT OF THOSE AND ADOPTING THOSE.
>> IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 6.4? TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE ITEM 6.4?
ITEM 6.5, APPOINTMENT OF BOARD REPRESENTATIVE FOR 2X2 COMMITTEE. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER?
[6.5 Appointment of Board Representative for 2X2 Committee]
>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
AS THE TRUSTEES ARE AWARE, AND TO PROVIDE SOME CONTEXT FOR THE COMMUNITY, CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF CORONADO, WE HOST REGULARLY SCHEDULED 2X2 COMMITTEE MEETINGS, WHERE TWO GOVERNING BOARD MEMBERS, TWO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS, THE CITY MANAGER, AND THE SUPERINTENDENT GET TOGETHER TO TALK ABOUT OPPORTUNITIES AND INITIATIVES TO STRENGTHEN THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE DISTRICT.
[00:40:03]
WE ARE BRINGING THIS FORWARD AS AN ACTION ITEM WITH TRUSTEE ANTRIM'S DEPARTURE FROM THE GOVERNING BOARD.WE NEED THE GOVERNING BOARD TO SELECT A MEMBER TO JOIN TRUSTEE YOUNGBLOOD ON THE 2X2 COMMITTEE.
THE NEXT SCHEDULED MEETING IS IN LATE FEBRUARY, AND SO WE BROUGHT THIS FORWARD TO THE BOARD FOR THE BOARD TO DETERMINE WHO WILL REPLACE TRUSTEE ANTRIM ON THE 2X2 COMMITTEE.
>> THANK YOU. IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 6.5? TRUSTEES? HOW'S IT GOING ON THAT COMMITTEE, TRUSTEE YOUNGBLOOD?
>> IT'S GOING WELL. IT'S VERY COLLEGIAL, AND IT'S GOOD THAT WE CAN WORK TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE SOME BENEFIT FOR THE COMMUNITY.
>> HOW OFTEN DO YOU GUYS MEET, TYPICALLY?
>> PROBABLY EVERY TWO OR THREE MONTHS.
>> I WOULD BE WILLING TO NOMINATE NEW TRUSTEE FITZHUGH LEE TO SERVE AS ONE OF THE TRUSTEES ON THE 2X2 COMMITTEE REPRESENTING CUSD.
>> WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT, TRUSTEE LEE?
>> I'LL SECOND IT. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S APPROPRIATE.
>> CAN WE SECOND YOUR NOMINATION?
>> YEAH, I THINK THAT'D BE GREAT. CALL FOR THE VOTE.
>> LET ME STEP IN FOR YOU, MA'AM.
>> WE'VE GOT LOTS OF COMMITTEES GOING.
ITEM 6.6, ADOPT REVISIONS TO BOARD POLICIES,
[6.6 Adopt Revisions to Board Policies, Board Bylaws, Administrative Regulations, and/or Exhibits]
BOARD BY-LAWS, ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATIONS AND/OR EXHIBITS.THIS WAS A FIRST READ LAST MONTH, AND SO THIS IS ADOPTING THOSE BPS AND ARS.
IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 6.6 AT THIS TIME? TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON 6.6? IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE 6.6?
ITEM 7.1, ACT REPORT VICE PRESIDENT LINDA COLEMAN.
[7.1 ACT Report: Vice President Linda Kullmann]
MY NAME IS LINDA COLEMAN, AND TODAY, I'M HERE IN MY ROLE AS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF ACT, THE ASSOCIATION OF CORONADO TEACHERS.
AS PROFESSIONAL EDUCATORS, THE MEMBERS OF ACT ARE DEEPLY COMMITTED TO THE SUCCESS OF EVERY STUDENT.
STUDENTS ARE AT THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING WE DO, AND WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT HAS A CARING, QUALIFIED, COMMITTED EDUCATOR.
ALTHOUGH THE WORD EDUCATOR IS IN OUR NAME, WE ARE ALSO SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS, SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS, COUNSELORS, AND NURSES.
DR. MAYLEN SULLIVAN IS WORKING HARD TO OFFER TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES TO OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
THE WORLD LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT IS SUPPORTING STUDENTS TRAVELING ABROAD AND IS HELPING THEM TO COMPLETE SUMMER STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS WITH THE COUNCIL ON INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL EXCHANGE.
PICTURED IN THIS SLIDE IS TYLER, A CURRENT CHS SOPHOMORE WHO RECENTLY TRAVELED TO FRANCE WITH THE PROGRAM.
DR. SULLIVAN HAS COMPLETED NINE APPLICATIONS SO FAR AND 19 OTHERS OPEN, BUT NOT COMPLETE.
SHE HOPES TO HEAR FROM MORE STUDENTS SOON.
THEY TOO CAN SHARE TRAVEL AND LANGUAGE EXPERIENCES, LIKE CURRENT CHS STUDENT LEAH.
LEAH ALSO TRAVELED TO FRANCE WITH THE PROGRAM.
CLOSER TO HOME, SILVER STRAND KINDERGARTEN TEACHER, LISA KINZEL, WORKED WITH HER STUDENTS TO PRACTICE FOR A PERFORMANCE.
THE KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS HAD A HOLIDAY PERFORMANCE FOR PARENTS AROUND THE FLAGPOLE ON A WEDNESDAY IN DECEMBER.
PARENTS, PEERS, AND GUESTS ALL ENJOYED THE PERFORMANCE, AND THE KINDERGARTNERS HAD FUN MAKING THEIR REINDEER CROWNS.
ANOTHER SILVER STRAND ELEMENTARY TEACHER, LINDSEY CUMMINS, LED HER STUDENTS THROUGH THE CREATION OF GINGERBREAD ITEMS.
[00:45:02]
SHE CREATED A GINGERBREAD THEMATIC UNIT.THE CULMINATING EVENT WAS GINGERBREAD STEAM ROTATIONS THAT INVOLVED ENGINEERING A BRIDGE FOR THE GINGERBREAD TO CROSS THE WATER AND OTHER DESIGN CHALLENGES.
THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE WAS MAKING SIX BATCHES OF GINGERBREAD PLAY DOUGH, NOT ONLY FOR THEIR ROTATION, BUT AS THEIR STUDENT GIFT FROM HER.
THE PLAY DOUGH SMELLED LIKE HOLIDAY SPICES, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, PLAYING WITH PLAY DOUGH HELPS DEVELOP FINE MOTOR SKILLS BY STRENGTHENING THE SMALL MUSCLES IN THE HANDS AND FINGERS.
ACTIVITIES LIKE ROLLING, PINCHING, SQUISHING, AND MOLDING THE DOUGH ENHANCE HAND-EYE COORDINATION, IMPROVE GRIP STRENGTH, AND REFINE DEXTERITY.
THESE SKILLS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR TASKS LIKE WRITING, CUTTING, AND BUTTONING.
ADDITIONALLY, MANIPULATING PLAY DOUGH ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY AND FOCUS, MAKING IT A FUN AND EFFECTIVE WAY TO BUILD FOUNDATIONAL MOTOR SKILLS.
I'D LIKE TO SHARE SOME INFORMATION WITH YOU.
RECENTLY, PRESIDENT BIDEN SIGNED INTO LAW H.R.82.
THIS LAW REMOVES THE PENALTIES IMPOSED ON PUBLIC SERVICE WORKERS, INCLUDING TEACHERS, WHEN IT COMES TO RECEIVING THE SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS THAT THEY PAID INTO WHILE WORKING IN OTHER JOBS AND CAREERS.
THESE PENALTIES WERE THE REASON THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVEN'T CHOSEN TEACHING AS A SECOND CAREER SINCE THEIR RETIREMENT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY, IN SOME CASES, THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS EACH MONTH.
WE ARE HOPING THAT THIS CHANGE WILL BRING MORE QUALIFIED TEACHERS TO OUR DISTRICT.
WE HAVE NOTICED THAT THE DISTRICT IS NOW SENDING OUT TRAFFIC ADVISORIES FOR KNOWN EVENTS THAT WILL NEGATIVELY IMPACT PEOPLE'S TRAVEL TO WORK AND SCHOOL.
ALSO, WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE TEMPERATURE IN OUR CLASSROOMS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE MORNINGS.
WE ARE GETTING TEMPERATURE READINGS SENT OVER IN THE 50S, AND I'M ONE OF THEM.
GRANZER HALL WAS 57 DEGREES ON TUESDAY MORNING AT 7:00 A.M. AFTER MULTIPLE COMMUNICATIONS, HOWEVER, WITH LEADERSHIP, SOME CLASSROOMS HAVE RECEIVED A SPACE HEATER, AND WE ARE HOPING THE DISTRICT CAN BE MORE PROACTIVE WHEN OUR CLASSROOMS ARE BELOW 60 DEGREES SO THAT OUR STUDENTS CAN FOCUS ON LEARNING.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME TODAY AND EACH DAY.
DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT WAS PRESENTED?
>> WHAT IS THAT HR NUMBER AGAIN? I'M SORRY.
[7.2 Student Board Member Report: Dylan Matter]
STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT. MR. MADER?>> ALL RIGHT, EVERYBODY. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A GOOD HOLIDAY SEASON, BUT THEY CAN'T LAST FOREVER, SO WE'RE BACK TO SCHOOL.
WITH THAT, WE HAVE FINALS WEEK STARTING NEXT WEEK AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS SUPER EXCITING, EVERYONE LOVES THAT.
BUT THAT WILL CONCLUDE TERM 1.
ALTHOUGH IT'S A STRESSFUL WEEK, IT'S AN EXCITING TIME.
IT'S A FRESH START FOR MANY, INCLUDING MYSELF.
YOU GET NEW CLASSES, GET TO INTERACT WITH NEW STUDENTS, VERY EXCITING STUFF.
MOVING ON, WE HAVE OUR FUNDING COLLEGE NIGHT LAST NIGHT IN THE MULTIPURPOSE ROOM.
THIS EVENT HOSTED EXPERTS IN FINANCIAL AID WHO PROVIDED A PRESENTATION AND A WORKSHOP TO HELP SENIORS COMPLETE THEIR FAFSA AND DREAM ACT.
THAT STUFF IS REALLY CONFUSING.
SHOUT OUT THEM BECAUSE I NEED MY MOM'S HELP FOR IT.
IT'S TOUGH STUFF. MOVING ON, WINTER DANCE TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE.
THIS IS A DANCE AT THE SOPHOMORES AND ASB ARE PLANNING.
THEY'RE CALLING IT MORP OR PROM BACKWARDS.
IT ORIGINALLY WAS A NON FORMAL DANCE, BUT THEY JUST CHANGED IT TODAY TO FORMAL AFTER STUDENTS SAID THAT THEY ACTUALLY WANT TO DRESS UP. THAT'S PRETTY FUN.
THE THEME IS GOING TO BE SUMMER AND CRUMBLE COOKIES ARE GOING TO BE PROVIDED, WHICH EVERYBODY LOVES.
IT SHOULD BE A FUN TIME AND IT'S AT THE MARRIOTT HERE. TELL EVERYONE ABOUT IT.
THEN WITH THE END OF FINALS, TERM 2 IS STARTING ON JANUARY 27TH.
ON THAT DAY, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE COLLEGE AND CAREER FAIR.
THIS EVENT IS VERY SPECIAL, VERY IMPORTANT.
IT'S GOING TO HAVE THREE ROTATIONS FOR OUR STUDENTS.
THE FIRST ROTATION, NOT IN ANY ORDER, BUT STUDENTS WILL LISTEN TO A COUNSELOR'S PRESENTATION DETAILING THEIR FUTURE COURSE SELECTIONS.
THAT'LL BE IN THE GYM, OR NO, THAT'LL BE IN THE AUDITORIUM.
THEN ANOTHER ROTATION WILL BE A CAREER PANEL OF SPEAKERS IN THE GYM, AND THIS IS MADE UP OF PROFESSIONALS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
THESE PANELISTS WILL DESCRIBE THEIR PROFESSIONS IN DETAIL, ALLOWING ISLANDERS TO LEARN ABOUT INTERESTING CAREER PATHS THEY MAY WANT TO EXPLORE.
LAST YEAR, WE HAD A PANEL OF PAST ISLANDERS,
[00:50:03]
SO A LITTLE BIT OF A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE, BUT IT SHOULD BE VERY EXCITING.THEN FINALLY, THERE WILL BE A COLLEGE AND CAREER FAIR IN THE QUAD.
THIS WILL HAVE MANY UNIVERSITIES, ALL BRANCHES OF THE MILITARY, COMMUNITY COLLEGES, TRADE SCHOOLS, GAP YEAR PROGRAMS, HAS ALL THAT STUFF, AND A WIDE VARIETY OF CAREER PATHS AS WELL.
THEN THIS WILL GIVE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND ALL THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO THEM AFTER GRADUATION.
IT'S SUPER FUN. MY FAVORITE PART WAS YOU GET MERCH FROM ALL THE BOOTHS.
THEY HAND OUT A BUNCH OF FREE STUFF, WHICH IS ALWAYS SWEET TO GET.
YEAH, THAT'S SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO.
THEN FINALLY, COLLEGE APPLICATION SEASON IS PRETTY MUCH OVER, AND STUDENTS ARE STARTING TO HEAR BACK, WHICH IS EXCITING AND SCARY.
I JUST WANT TO GIVE A BIG SHOUT OUT TO A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE CLASS OF 2025 WHO HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED ACCEPTANCES.
THERE'S SOME CRAZY SCHOOLS ALREADY.
WE HAVE DAVIS. COOL SCHOOLS ALREADY.
SOMEONE'S GOING TO, I THINK, ABU DHABI, WHICH IS REALLY COOL.
YEAH, REALLY EXCITING FOR THEM.
MOVING ON WITH CMS. THE SPELLING BEE IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, AS WE'RE HERE.
BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE OVER THERE.
I'M SURE THEY'RE ALL GOING TO DO GREAT.
THEN TRAINS ARE ALSO WORKING HARD TO FINISH THE SEMESTER STRONG.
THEN FINALLY, FOR VILLAGE, THEY'RE CONTINUING EXTENDED ART LESSONS FOR STUDENTS, THUS GIVING TEACHERS VALUABLE PLC AND PLANNING TIME.
THEY'RE ALSO EXCITED TO BRING BACK THE PANCAKE BREAKFAST AT VILLAGE IN COLLABORATION WITH THEIR PTO AND CORONADO ROTARY.
THIS EVENT WILL BE ON JANUARY 25TH.
THEN AS FOR STRAND, MS. MOORE IS HERE TO PRESENT.
I'M GOING TO LEAVE THAT TO HER. THANK YOU. THAT'S ALL I GOT.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> HAVE YOU GOTTEN A SCHOOL YET?
>> NO, I'M HOPING FOR USC, WHICH COMES OUT TOMORROW.
>> GOOD LUCK. CONGRATULATIONS. AT THIS TIME, WE'LL TAKE A QUICK FIVE-MINUTE BREAK AND WE'LL BE BACK.
[7.3 Silver Strand Elementary School Annual Report: Principal, Jennifer Moore (15 min. + Board Discussion)]
SILVER STRAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT.>> [APPLAUSE] NO PRESSURE WHATSOEVER.
[LAUGHTER] GOOD EVENING, TEAMMATES AND TRUSTEES, AND DYLAN, NICE TO MEET YOU.
WELCOME, FITZ. I BELIEVE IT'S SCHOOL BOARD APPRECIATION MONTH, AND I WANT TO APPRECIATE YOU FOR YOUR WILLINGNESS TO SERVE.
BE UP FOR ELECTION, GO THROUGH THAT ENTIRE PROCESS AND CONTINUE TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR SCHOOLS IN THIS CAPACITY.
I KNOW THAT'S A BIG DEAL, AND WE APPRECIATE YOU.
SPEAKING OF PRIVILEGES, WHAT A PRIVILEGE IT IS TO BE UP HERE, SERVING AND REPORTING FROM SILVER STRAND, WHERE I AM PRINCIPAL, WHICH WAS A DREAM I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD [LAUGHTER] WHEN I STARTED MY CAREER HERE WITH THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, AND I JUST HAVE TO ALWAYS WHEN I'M UP HERE, EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TO THIS DISTRICT FOR PROVIDING ME WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK WITH SO MANY DIVERSE PEOPLE AND CONSTITUENTS OF OUR DISTRICT, AND I FEEL LIKE I'M IN A WONDERFUL PLACE THAT I WOULD LOVE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT TONIGHT.
WE START THIS BY TALKING ABOUT WHAT A UNIQUE SCHOOL, SILVER STRAND ELEMENTARY IS NESTLED IN OUR MILITARY HOUSING ON FEDERAL LAND, A WONDERFUL SIZE, SURROUNDED BY BEACH AND BAY AND WHERE WE HAVE A DIVERSE COMMUNITY THAT SERVES OUR RESIDENTS OF MILITARY HOUSING AS WELL AS OUR KS RESIDENTS, AND A HANDFUL OF INTERDISTRICT TRANSFERS LARGELY FROM IMPERIAL BEACH AND LARGELY MILITARY AFFILIATED.
IF YOU NOTICED IN SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER'S REPORT THAT OUR DISTRICT IS 40% MILITARY AFFILIATED WHEN YOU LOOK AT OUR PRETTY CONSISTENT PERCENTAGE OF SILVER STRAND, STUDENTS BEING 75-79% MILITARY AFFILIATED.
WE WE ARE THE ANCHOR SCHOOL FOR OUR MILITARY COMMUNITY, AND IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO SERVE FAMILIES WHO SERVE.
[00:55:03]
WE HAVE SOME UNIQUE TRADITIONS AT SILVER STRAND, BOTH WHICH I HAVE SUSTAINED FROM YEARS THAT PRECEDED ME.THE HALLMARK OF THAT IS THE FRIDAY FLAGPOLE ASSEMBLY.
YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF THAT COMMUNITY GATHERING WHEN WE HAVE A THREE-DAY WEEKEND AND OUR STUDENTS SAY, ARE WE HAVING A THURSDAY FLAGPOLE, MS. MOORE? NOW, WE DON'T DO THURSDAY FLAGPOLES, BUT YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT FROM AN ADULT PERSPECTIVE GATHERING AND STANDING AROUND THE FLAGPOLE MIGHT FEEL LIKE A LITTLE BIT OF A CHORE TO OUR STUDENTS, BUT THEY LOOK FORWARD TO IT EVERY WEEK.
I THINK IT'S BECAUSE WE CAN'T UNDERESTIMATE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO HAVE COMMUNITY GATHERINGS WHERE WE'RE REINFORCING OUR CULTURE AND OUR AGREEMENTS.
WE HAVE A SENSE OF UNITY AND SHARED EXPERIENCE WHEN WE GATHER TOGETHER WEEKLY BECAUSE WE'VE LISTENED TO THE SAME WORDS OR SONGS OR REINFORCEMENTS.
WE HAVE STUDENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT THOSE ASSEMBLIES THAT PUT OUR STUDENTS IN FRONT OF ONE ANOTHER, AND THEY HEAR IMPORTANT MESSAGES ABOUT WHAT IT IS TO BE AN INDIVIDUAL AS WELL AS TO BE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.
WE ALSO HAVE SOME OTHER TRADITIONS, INCLUDING TODAY'S FUN RUN, WHICH THANK YOU TO OUR PTO AND OUR SPECIALS TEAM FOR FACILITATING.
THEY RAN THEIR HEARTS OUT, AND WHAT'S ALWAYS GRATIFYING IS WATCHING STUDENTS HELP ONE ANOTHER.
WE HAVE FRIENDS WHO NEED HELP GETTING AROUND THE TRACK.
WE HAVE FRIENDS WHO FALL DOWN OR WHO ARE DISCOURAGED, AND THE FIRST ONES TO RESPOND ARE ALWAYS FELLOW PEERS.
I THINK I TOOK 12 PICTURES OF STUDENTS HOLDING HANDS AND RUNNING AROUND THE TRACK.
FEELS GOOD TODAY, AND WE RAISE SOME MONEY TOO.
THE OTHER TRADITION I JUST WANT TO CALL ATTENTION TO, WHICH IS COMING UP IS OUR GLOBAL SCHOOL PLAY DAY, WHICH IS COMING UP IN THE FIRST WEEK OF FEBRUARY.
I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU COME VISIT AND OBSERVE WHAT THIS DAY LOOKS LIKE BECAUSE WE DEDICATE THE ENTIRE DAY TO UNSTRUCTURED PLAY.
IF YOU THINK THAT'S NOT A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY, I WILL PROVE YOU WRONG.
[LAUGHTER] TRY NOT TO BE AGGRESSIVE IN MY APPROACH TONIGHT, BUT I WOULD LOVE TO SHOW YOU WHAT STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT EACH OTHER WHEN THEY'RE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SOME ACTIVITIES AND GAMES AND CREATIONS.
WE HAVE SO MUCH INNOVATION AND BUILDING AND CREATIVITY THAT HAPPENS, BUT IT'S LARGELY STRUCTURED BY ADULTS AND PLANNED BY ADULTS.
THEN WHEN STUDENTS ARE IN CHARGE, AND THEY GET TO SHOW OFF WHAT THEIR TALENTS ARE OR WHAT THEIR INTERESTS ARE, AND BRING EACH OTHER INTO THOSE REALLY MAGICAL THINGS HAPPEN, SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.
WE'RE GOING TO GET INTO SOME DATA HERE.
AS FAR AS OUR ENROLLMENT AND DEMOGRAPHICS GO, MUCH IS PRETTY CONSISTENT.
ALTHOUGH, AS WE'VE EXPANDED OUR TK BAND TO ALMOST INCLUDE A FULL YEAR, AS ANTICIPATED, WE HAD MORE THAN A FULL TK CLASS, SO WE HAVE AN ADDITIONAL KINDER TK COMBO.
WE ANTICIPATE CONTINUING TO HAVE PROBABLY FOUR CLASSROOMS OF KINDERGARTEN TK IN SOME RATIO AS WE CONTINUE.
OUR ENROLLMENT RIGHT NOW IS REALLY, I THINK, HEALTHY FOR OUR SCHOOL AT 336, AND WE SENSIBLY HAVE ROOM FOR MORE IN SOME OF OUR GRADE LEVELS WHERE CLASS SIZES ARE A LITTLE BIT LOW.
IT'S A LITTLE BIT HARD TO PREDICT WITH THE COMINGS AND GOINGS OF STUDENTS AND OUR POPULATION CAN FLUCTUATE FROM MONTH TO MONTH, BUT WE'RE LOOKING HEALTHY.
I WOULD JUST CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT BETWEEN LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR, WE DID INCREASE THE NUMBER OF NEW STUDENTS AND CERTAINLY HAVING MORE TK AND KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS MIGHT EXPLAIN SOME OF THAT, BUT WE DID SEE A GREATER REVOLUTION IN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS MOVING IN AND MOVING OUT THAN WE TYPICALLY DO YEAR TO YEAR.
AGAIN, MILITARY DEPENDENT RATIO IS PRETTY CONSISTENT.
POST PANDEMIC, WE WENT BACK OUT AND STARTED REALLY ELICITING THE RESPONSES FROM OUR PARENTS ABOUT ECONOMIC LEVEL BECAUSE IT OPENS UP A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR US IN TERMS OF GRANTS, FREE FIELD TRIPS, AND THEN OF COURSE,
[01:00:01]
OUR TITLE 1 STATUS, WHICH WE'LL DISCUSS IN A MOMENT.WE INCLUDED IN OUR DATA THIS YEAR, THE NUMBER OF STUDENT SUPPORT MEETINGS THAT WE'VE HELD.
THAT'S JUST TO POINT OUT THAT ON A WEEKLY BASIS, WE MEET TO LOOK AT AND DISCUSS THE DATA AND WHO PARTICULAR STUDENTS ARE IN SUPPORT OF THEM WHEN WE SEE THAT EITHER THEIR ACADEMIC DATA OR THEIR BEHAVIOR OR SOCIAL EMOTIONAL PROFILE HAVE CHANGED AND THEY DESERVE A LITTLE MORE EXAMINATION.
SOMETIMES THAT EXTRA ATTENTION AND SOME ADDITIONAL INTERVENTIONS HELP LAUNCH THEM BACK TO A SUCCESSFUL STATUS, AND SOMETIMES THAT LEADS INTO ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS OR MORE FORMAL INTERVENTIONS.
BUT IT'S A CONSTANT PROCESS ALL YEAR LONG.
IF WE'VE HAD 18 SO FAR, WE CAN EXPECT THAT WE WILL HAVE MET WITH ABOUT 10% OF OUR POPULATION BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
AGAIN, OUR SUBGROUP DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION IS ALSO REALLY PRETTY CONSISTENT YEAR TO YEAR, DESPITE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WE SEE COMING AND GOING AT SILVER STRAND.
WE HAVE QUITE A DIVERSE POPULATION.
WE ARE A TITLE 1 PROGRAM ASSISTANT SCHOOL, AND THIS HAS BEEN A LONG TERM DESIGNATION FOR US.
IT COMES WITH ADDITIONAL FUNDS AND THOSE ADDITIONAL FUNDS HAVE HISTORICALLY, TRADITIONALLY AND APPROPRIATELY BEEN DIRECTED TOWARD READING INTERVENTION.
I'M PLEASED THAT WE'VE HAD COMMUNITY SUPPORT TO CONTINUE TO FUND A READING INTERVENTION TEACHER AT OUR SITE.
WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE IS ELLEN CODY, TO PUT A NAME TO THE POSITION.
ELLEN CODY HAS EXPERTISE IN READING.
SHE HAS EVOLVED WITH THE TIMES AND THE CURRICULA AND THE VARIOUS INTERVENTIONS WE'VE INTRODUCED.
SHE'S A LEADER IN THE DISTRICT IN TERMS OF READING STRATEGIES, AND SHE TAKES STUDENTS THAT BY ASSESSMENT INDICATE THAT THEY WILL BENEFIT FROM INTERVENTION AND MEETS WITH EACH GRADE LEVEL, A GROUP OF STUDENTS AND USES EVIDENCE BASED CURRICULUM AND STRATEGIES TO HELP LAUNCH THEIR READING SKILLS.
WHILE SHE'S DOING THAT, OUR ENTIRE GRADE LEVEL IS ALSO FOCUSED ON READING.
IN THE CLASSROOM THAT LOOKS LIKE TEACHERS HOLDING SMALL GROUP, READING ROTATIONS TO ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT, REGARDLESS OF LEVEL IS GETTING TARGETED ASSISTANCE AND ENRICHMENT.
IN ELA, WE ARE GREEN ON THE DASHBOARD, WHICH MEANS THAT WE'RE IN A MAINTENANCE MODE AS FAR AS OUR DATA IS CONCERNED.
YOU CAN SEE THAT WE ARE FOCUS ON OUR HIGHER GRADES.
THAT'S PRETTY CONSISTENT ACROSS OUR DATA THAT WE SEE FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE OFTEN BEING AN AREA FOR INCREASED FOCUS AND WHY WE SOMETIMES ALLOCATE MORE RESOURCES INTO THOSE GRADE LEVELS AS THEY ARE GETTING READY TO ENTER INTO MIDDLE SCHOOL AND NEED US.
MUCH SUPPORT BUILDING SKILLS AND STUDENTS AS POSSIBLE.
WE'RE FOCUSING AS A SITE AND AS AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ON BOTH HOW WE'RE APPROACHING WRITING AND HOW WE'RE APPROACHING PHONICS INSTRUCTION.
WHEN YOU ADOPT AN UMBRELLA CURRICULUM FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, EVEN IF YOU STUDY AND LOOK AT A VARIETY OF CURRICULA, WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO HIT ALL THE READING, THE WRITING, THE PHONICS, AND BALANCE LITERATURE AND INFORMATIONAL TEXT, THERE ARE GOING TO BE SOME PLACES WHERE AN ADOPTED CURRICULUM PERHAPS DOESN'T HAVE EVERYTHING IT NEEDS.
WE'RE GOING THROUGH A DISTRICT DISCUSSION AROUND HOW WE CAN ALIGN OUR WRITING INSTRUCTION AND OUR PHONICS INSTRUCTION TO ENSURE THAT WE'RE SUPPLEMENTING OUR ADOPTED CURRICULUM WITH APPROPRIATE STRATEGIES THAT ARE EVIDENCE BASED.
IN MATH, I THINK WE'RE PROJECTING OUR DATA FOR THREE YEARS.
IT'S TEMPTING TO WANT TO SHOW YOU MORE LONGITUDINAL DATA BECAUSE PRIOR TO THE ADOPTION OF OUR BRIDGES MATH CURRICULUM,
[01:05:02]
I THINK YOU WOULD SEE, AND IF YOU WATCHED OR LOOKED AT OLD BOARD AGENDAS, MATH ACHIEVEMENT WAS AN AREA OF FOCUS FOR QUITE A WHILE IN THIS DISTRICT.IT'S REALLY PLEASING TO SEE HOW MUCH GROWTH HAS OCCURRED, AND HOW MUCH MORE EXCITEMENT, I THINK TEACHERS AND STUDENTS HAVE EXHIBITED AROUND MATH INSTRUCTION AS OUR NEW CURRICULUM HAS BEEN A LITTLE MORE CONCEPTUAL AND HELPING STUDENTS SEE MULTIPLE WAYS OF SOLVING PROBLEMS. WE KNOW THAT FAMILIES SOMETIMES STRUGGLE WITH THIS NEW WAY OF LOOKING AT MATH, BUT IT'S EXCITING TO ACTUALLY LEARN FROM YOUR CHILDREN ALL THE DIFFERENT WAYS THAT THEY CAN SEE MATH NOW AND TALK ABOUT MATH.
TALKING ABOUT MATH IS ANOTHER BIG COMPONENT.
AGAIN, LOOKING AT OUR HIGHER GRADES, WE HAVE TWO MATH INTERVENTION STAFF MEMBERS.
ONE IS FUNDED BY THE DODEA GRANT.
CHRIS TEACH OUT, AND SHE PUSHES IN TO HELP OUR TEACHERS SPECIFICALLY WITH THE WORKPLACES COMPONENT OF OUR CURRICULUM, WHICH IS WHERE STUDENTS GET TO PRACTICE THE SKILLS THEY'VE LEARNED IN A GAME ENVIRONMENT.
THEN WE HAVE A TALENTED STAFF MEMBER WHO'S ALSO A PE COACH ON OUR CAMPUS WHO PROVIDES SUPPORT IN FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE AND DOES A VARIETY OF PUSHING IN AS WELL AS PARALLEL INSTRUCTION, AND WE'VE SEEN RESULTS FROM BOTH OF THOSE PUSH IN SUPPORTS AT SILVER STRAND.
WE KNOW AS A DISTRICT THAT SCIENCE INSTRUCTION AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL HAS BEEN AN AREA OF FOCUS AND THIS CONTINUES.
WE'RE GRATEFUL FOR THE DODEA GRANT AND THE WORK OF THE LEARNING DEPARTMENT IN HELPING MAKE IMPLEMENTATION OF HANDS ON SCIENCE AND NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS MORE ACCESSIBLE BOTH FOR TEACHERS AND FOR STUDENTS.
THE GOAL HERE IS THAT EVERY GRADE LEVEL AND EVERY STUDENT IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WILL HAVE EXPOSURE TO SCIENCE LESSONS AND SCIENCE UNITS FOR EVERY GRADE LEVEL THROUGHOUT THEIR TIME IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
WE EXPECT THAT AS WE INCREASE THAT ALIGNMENT AND THAT IMPLEMENTATION WITH FIDELITY OF ESSENTIAL LESSONS AND UNITS, WE WILL SEE AN INCREASED UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS ACQUISITION IN OUR FIFTH GRADES BECAUSE IT'S CUMULATIVE.
ONLY OUR FIFTH GRADERS ARE ASSESSED, BUT THEY'RE NOT THE ONLY GRADE LEVEL THAT SHOULD BE EXPERIENCING SCIENCE. WE'RE EXCITED.
IT'S BEEN A LOT OF WORK FOR OUR LEARNING DEPARTMENT AND FOR OUR TEACHERS.
HANDS-ON SCIENCE HAS A LOT OF COMPONENTS, PARTICULARLY AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, BUT IT'S REALLY GRATIFYING TO SEE THE EXCITEMENT OF STUDENTS WORKING WITH MATERIALS, DOING INVESTIGATIONS AND SEEING THINGS GROW AND CHANGE, FLY, AND DRIVE, ETC.
THE INNOVATION LAB IS PART OF THAT.
WE'RE LOOKING AT HOW THE INNOVATION LAB AUGMENTS, CREATES REDUNDANCIES IN THE SCIENCE CONCEPTS AND SKILLS WE'RE TEACHING.
WHEN WE LOOK AT WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM ASSESSMENT AND BEST PRACTICES AS I MENTIONED, WE LOOK AT OUR CURRICULUM FOR THE AREAS WHERE THERE MAY BE DEFICITS OR PLACES THAT WE DON'T FEEL ARE AS ROBUST AND WE HAVE IDENTIFIED THAT PHONICS IN THE BENCHMARK PROGRAM CAN BE LACKING IN CERTAIN GRADE LEVELS.
WE'VE BEEN DOING PILOTS AT BOTH SITES WITH VARIOUS PROGRAMS AT SILVER STRAND.
THERE'S BEEN EXCITEMENT OVER THE USE OF FOUNDATIONS, WHICH IS AN INTERVENTION PROGRAM, BUT CAN ALSO BE A TIER 1 SUPPORT IN OUR KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADES.
I KNOW AS A PRINCIPAL FROM OBSERVATION AND FROM WORKING WITH TEACHERS THAT THE MORE CLOSELY ALIGNED AND COLLABORATIVE OUR TEACHING TEAMS ARE AT ANY GRADE LEVEL, WE SEE CORRELATIONS IN OUR TEST SCORES ACROSS CLASSROOMS AND ACROSS GRADE LEVELS, AND SO IT BEHOOVES US TO PROMOTE THAT COLLABORATION, PROVIDE TIME AND SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THAT WORK TOGETHER.
I ALSO JUST WANT TO POINT OUT HOW IMPORTANT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL FOCUS IN THE CLASSROOM IS AS WELL.
STUDENTS COMING IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM INTO RECESS SETTINGS AND OTHER UNSTRUCTURED TIMES BRING BACK CONFLICTS AND DRAMAS AND WHEN A CLASSROOM HAS A HEALTHY FOCUS ON PROBLEM SOLVING AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW WE WORK TOGETHER TO SOLVE PROBLEMS, THE RETURN TO INSTRUCTION AND THE CONFIDENCE WITH WHICH STUDENTS CAN MANAGE EMOTIONS AND PROBLEMS THAT OCCUR ARE JUST SO MUCH GREATER.
>> THOSE ARE ALL IMPORTANT AS WELL.
[01:10:04]
THIS IS A HUGE CELEBRATION FOR SILVER STRAND, AND WE'LL TALK SOME MORE ABOUT SPECIAL EDUCATION.BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, JUST THE TREMENDOUS GROWTH IN OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, MEETING OR EXCEEDING STANDARDS.
I WOULD JUST POINT TO A COUPLE FACTORS.
ONE IS THAT WE HAVE, AS A DISTRICT, PROMOTED AND SUPPORTED THE CO-TEACHING MODEL AND MUCH MORE ROBUSTLY OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
PROVIDING MATERIAL AND TIME SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS.
BECAUSE IT'S NOW JUST A PART OF HOW WE SUPPORT STUDENTS ON OUR CAMPUS, BOTH GEN ED AND SPECIAL EDUCATION, TO BE HONEST, WHEN YOU HAVE TWO TEACHERS IN A CLASSROOM, IT BENEFITS EVERYONE.
THEN YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE GREATER SUCCESS, UNDERSTANDING, SKILLS, ETC.
THERE'S ALSO JUST A SENSE OF SHARED OWNERSHIP OF ALL STUDENTS IN THE CLASS.
I THINK WHEN WE'VE HAD A PULL-OUT MODEL FOR SUPPORT OF STUDENTS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION, THERE CAN BE A SENSE THAT THEY'RE BEING TAKEN CARE OF ELSEWHERE.
I THINK A BIG CHANGE IN CULTURE AND APPROACH IS A SENSE OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS BEING OURS AND ALL OF THEIR SUCCESSES BEING A RESULT OF ALL OF OUR WORK.
THAT'S REALLY EXCITING TO SEE.
I THINK I CAN RELATE HAVING BEEN IN EDUCATION FOR AS LONG AS I HAVE THAT WE ARE INCLUSIVE IN WAYS THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN BEFORE IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
A LOT OF CHALLENGES COME WITH THAT, AND I WILL TOUCH ON SOME OF THOSE AS WELL, BUT IT'S GRATIFYING TO SEE A LOT OF THE SUCCESSES THAT COME WITH GENERAL EDUCATION CO-TEACHING.
I WON'T WALK YOU THROUGH WHAT MY SENSE OF THE HISTORY OF SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM GROWTH AT OUR SITE IS EXCEPT TO SUMMARIZE THAT WHEN I BEGAN AT SILVER STRAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SEVEN YEARS AGO, WE DID NOT HAVE A FULL SPECTRUM PROGRAM.
WE HAVE INCLUDED STUDENTS WITH A RANGE OF DISABILITIES SO THAT STUDENTS CAN ATTEND SCHOOL IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS.
WE KNOW THAT IF WE'RE GOING TO PROVIDE RESOURCES FOR ALL STUDENTS AT THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL, THAT'S GOING TO BE A BIG TASK FOR OUR DISTRICT AS WELL AS OUR SITE AS FAR AS STAFFING AND RESOURCES ARE CONCERNED.
WE CAN ALWAYS DO MORE AND WE'RE CONTINUING TO GROW IN THIS AREA.
I WANT TO SPOTLIGHT AND POINT OUT THAT I THINK ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE AREAS OF GROWTH HAS BEEN INCLUDING BCBAS AND RVTS, BOARD-CERTIFIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSTS, AND OUR REGISTERED BEHAVIOR TECHNICIANS BECAUSE WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO HAVE ACADEMIC NEEDS, WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEHAVIOR NEEDS, AND WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO HAVE BOTH, AND MEETING THE NEEDS OF ALL THOSE STUDENTS REQUIRES PEOPLE WHO TRULY UNDERSTAND BEHAVIOR.
I CAN SAY THAT'S PROBABLY BEEN MY GREATEST AREA OF GROWTH.
COMING TO AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SETTING HAS BEEN LEARNING ABOUT BEHAVIOR AND JUST HOW IT INFLUENCES EVERYTHING.
ADULT BEHAVIOR, CHILDREN'S BEHAVIOR.
THE MORE WE CAN UNDERSTAND ABOUT IT, THE MORE WE UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE USUALLY JUST ADJUSTING OUR OWN ADULT RESPONSES TO THOSE BEHAVIORS AND/OR LEARNING HOW TO BETTER ANTICIPATE AND SCAFFOLD SUPPORTS FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE SUCCESS.
AS WE CONTINUE TO LEARN ABOUT THAT, WE CONTINUE TO MAKE SCHOOL MORE SUCCESSFUL FOR STUDENTS.
WE'RE ALSO INCLUDING STUDENTS WITH A VARIETY OF BEHAVIORS IN CLASSROOMS COMES WITH THE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE SUPPORTING ALL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS WITH THE APPROPRIATE RESOURCES AND TRAINING, AND THAT CONTINUES TO BE AN AREA OF GROWTH FOR US.
JUST TO SUMMARIZE OUR CELEBRATIONS.
WE'RE SO LUCKY AT SILVER STRAND TO HAVE STRONG, PASSIONATE, TALENTED, AND COLLABORATIVE SPECIAL EDUCATORS AND PARAPROFESSIONALS.
I'VE WATCHED THE CAREERS OF PEOPLE WHO TAKE ON A JOB, SUPPORTING INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AND THEN GROW IN THIS IDEA THAT BEHAVIOR SUPPORT CAN BE A CAREER, AND OUR DISTRICT HAS HELPED SUPPORT THAT THROUGH A PATHWAY FROM BEING AN IA TO AN IABHC WITH BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE TO BEING AN RBT AND THEN POTENTIALLY A BCBA.
WE HAVE SOME OF OUR PARAPROFESSIONALS SEEKING TO BECOME SPECIAL EDUCATORS.
THAT'S JUST I THINK I HAVE WORDS FOR THAT.
WHEN YOU EXPOSE SOMEBODY TO A CAREER WORKING WITH CHILDREN WHO
[01:15:03]
HAVE NEEDS AND THEN THEY WANT TO DEDICATE A CAREER TO THAT.THERE'S SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENING THERE.
THEN WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE CONSISTENT AND POSITIVE SUBSTITUTES BECAUSE WE ARE NOT ALWAYS ABLE TO FILL ALL OF OUR POSITIONS THROUGH HIRING BECAUSE SOMETIMES WE'RE LACKING APPLICANTS, BUT WE HAVE A STABLE OF AMAZING PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SHOW UP EVERY DAY FOR US AND OUR STUDENTS.
THEN THE CHALLENGES, I THINK WE ARE OPERATING AN INCLUSION MODEL OF EDUCATION, AND INCLUSION REQUIRES ENSURING THAT OUR CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENTS, OUR TEACHERS, OUR PARAPROFESSIONALS, OUR PRINCIPALS, AND ALL SUPPORT STAFF AND FAMILIES ARE ON BOARD TOGETHER WITH WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE AND THAT WE HAVE EVERYTHING WE NEED TO ENSURE SAFETY AND SUCCESS AND ACCESS TO WHAT INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS NEED, AS WELL AS EVERYONE SUPPORTING THE STUDENTS.
I WOULD JUST SAY WE JUST NEED TO CONTINUE TO TALK ABOUT BEHAVIOR SUPPORT, WHAT BEHAVIOR IS ACROSS GEN ED AND SPED ENVIRONMENTS.
I HEARD A PODCAST THAT SAID, THE MOST DRAMATIC HUMAN BEHAVIORS COME FROM A NEED TO EITHER PROTECT ONESELF OR ONE CLOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE CLOSE TO THEM, THEIR RESOURCES, OR SOCIAL ORDER.
I THINK I WAS PROBABLY EXERCISING AND LISTENING TO THIS PODCAST AND GOING, WELL, THAT'S WHY SO MUCH HAPPENS IN LINEUP BEHAVIOR.
THIS IS WHEN SOCIAL ORDER AND STUDENTS' SENSE OF WHAT'S RIGHT OR WRONG COMES INTO PLAY.
AT A FRIDAY FLAGPOLE WHILE WE WERE REINFORCING THAT SCALE, I DID POINT OUT TO THE ADULTS THAT WE ARE FREQUENTLY IN LINEUP ORDER IN OUR VEHICLES AND NOT ALWAYS SHOWING GREAT RESTRAINT FOR OUR OWN FRUSTRATIONS WITH SOCIAL NORMS. THAT CERTAINLY BUILDS IN ME EMPATHY FOR OUR SHARED CHALLENGES SUPPORTING HUMAN BEHAVIOR.
THEN THE DASHBOARD, WHICH I THINK YOU'VE BEEN INTRODUCED TO.
I JUST WANT TO HIGHLIGHT WHAT HOURS LOOKS LIKE.
PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM, STARTING TO BE SOMETHING THAT PERHAPS IS IMPROVING.
WE ARE NOT IN THE ORANGE AND RED AS WE WERE. THAT'S GOOD.
I THINK WE'VE HAD RENEWED CONVERSATIONS AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF FAMILIES BRINGING STUDENTS TO SCHOOL.
WE DON'T WANT STUDENTS TO COME TO SCHOOL ILL, OF COURSE, BUT WE'RE SEEING GOOD IMPROVEMENT IN THAT AREA.
WE ARE IN THE RED AND OUR SUSPENSION RATE AND LAST YEAR WAS AN OUTLYING YEAR FOR US, I THINK, AS FAR AS SUSPENSIONS GO.
I THINK I'M JUST GOING TO SAY THAT WE HAD PHYSICALLY HARMFUL BEHAVIORS AND WE HAD HARASSING BEHAVIORS THAT WERE NOT ALWAYS RESPONSIVE TO CONSEQUENCES AND INTERVENTIONS, AND SO SUSPENSION WAS A RESPONSE THAT IS IN OUR ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLKIT.
IT'S NOT A PREFERRED ONE, AND WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO KEEP STUDENTS IN SCHOOL AND HELP THEM LEARN AND IMPROVE WITHOUT THAT MEASURE.
I THINK THIS YEAR IS PROMISING TO BE A BETTER YEAR, ALTHOUGH WE'RE STILL ADDRESSING SIMILAR BEHAVIORS.
THAT GOES BACK TO WE'LL TALK ABOUT SEL AND EQUITY MEASURES AS WE MOVE FORWARD.
TO REMAIN IN THE BLUE, WE HAVE TO MAINTAIN OR IMPROVE.
BECAUSE OUR OVERALL ELA SCORE WENT DOWN A LITTLE BIT, WE'RE IN THE GREEN, WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO PROGRESS IN THAT AREA.
JUST A SUMMARY OF I THINK WE HAVE A VERY ROBUST SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND SUPPORT STRUCTURE AT SILVER STRAND THAT INCLUDES HOW WE STRUCTURE OUR RECESS PROGRAMS. WE HAVE CURRICULUM FOR THE CLASSROOMS. WE HAVE CLEARLY STATED AGREEMENTS FOR THE SCHOOL.
WE KNOW ADOPTED THE LEADER AND ME PROGRAM.
WE ARE ALSO LOOKING TO SEE IF THERE AREN'T ANY OTHER PROGRAMS THAT MIGHT OFFER MORE COMPREHENSIVELY WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT.
AGAIN, WE'RE NOT HAVING TO SUPPLEMENT AND POTENTIALLY NOT BE CONSISTENT.
SHARED VOCABULARY FEELS REALLY IMPORTANT.
OUR MTSS COMMITTEE IS DOING THAT RESEARCH.
WE WANT TO HIT ON THE SKILLS OF SHARING RESOURCES, EXPRESSING OURSELVES, UNDERSTANDING OTHERS, AND SOLVING PROBLEMS AS BEING CRITICAL TO GETTING ALONG AND MAXIMIZING LEARNING TIME.
A HIGHLIGHT AT OUR SCHOOL OR STUDENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN FIFTH GRADE,
[01:20:03]
WHICH PROMOTE A SENSE OF PRIDE AS WELL AS EMPATHY FOR OTHERS.CARL WAS VISITING OUR SCHOOL RECENTLY WHEN OUR KINDERGARTNERS WERE MAKING THE LONG JOURNEY FROM OUR EATING AREA TO THEIR RECESS AREA, AND IT IS FAR FOR KINDERGARTNERS.
WE USE OUR FIFTH GRADERS THAT ROTATE IN AND OUT OF THESE ROLES AS WHAT WE CALL KINDER BUDDIES, AND THEY HELP THOSE LINES PROCESS, AND IT'S PRETTY CUTE, AND IT'S PRETTY EFFECTIVE BECAUSE THE KINDERGARTNERS BY AND LARGE, LEARN TO LISTEN TO THE FIFTH GRADERS AFTER SOME TRIAL AND ERROR.
THEN THE FIFTH GRADERS JUST REALLY LOVE HAVING THOSE CONNECTIONS TO YOUNGER STUDENTS ON OUR CAMPUS.
WE ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE A FULL-TIME COUNSELOR.
WE KNOW THAT THAT'S A RESOURCE PRIVILEGE AT A SCHOOL OUR SIZE.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT SOPHIA FROST CLINICAL COUNSELOR ROLE ENCOMPASSES.
SHE, OF COURSE, DOES INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING FOR STUDENTS.
SOME OF THAT IS CRISIS RESPONSE, RISK ASSESSMENTS, STUDENTS WHO NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO.
SOME OF THAT IS STUDENTS WHO HAVE COUNSELING SUPPORTS WRITTEN INTO AN IEP OR A 504 AS PART OF AN SST.
THEN SHE RUNS CYCLES OF SOCIAL GROUPS THAT SELECT STUDENTS WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM WORKING TOGETHER IN A COUNSELING SESSION OR A COUNSELING PLAY SESSION TO ROLE PLAY, TALK ABOUT TIMES WHEN GETTING ALONG TOGETHER IS MORE CHALLENGING.
THEN SHE'S ALSO A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF OUR STUDENT STUDY TEAM, STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM, AND OUR 504 PLAN COORDINATION.
BUSY AND VERY HELPFUL ON OUR CAMPUS TO ME WHEN WE HAVE MULTIPLE STUDENT BEHAVIOR EVENTS HAPPENING.
THAT'S A LITTLE STEP, SOMETIMES OUTSIDE OF HER JOB DESCRIPTION.
BUT SOMETIMES IT'S ALL HANDS ON DECK, AS WE KNOW.
WE ALSO BENEFIT FROM HAVING A MILITARY FAMILY LIFE COUNSELOR WHO HAS A VISIBLE PRESENCE ON OUR CAMPUS FOR OUR STUDENTS AND ALSO HAS FAMILY CONNECTIONS THAT ARE CONFIDENTIAL AND ALLOW OUR MILITARY FAMILIES TO ACCESS SUPPORT THROUGH SOMEBODY RIGHT THERE EMBEDDED IN THE COMMUNITY, AND THAT CAN BE THAT WE HAVE A WALL BETWEEN US SO THAT THE FAMILIES KNOW THAT THEY CAN ACCESS THAT SUPPORT WITHOUT NECESSARILY BEING A SCHOOL-BASED SUPPORT, EVEN THOUGH WE HOUSE IT.
THEN WE'RE GRATEFUL FOR SAFE HARBOR CORONADO FOR BRINGING PROGRAMS IN SUCH AS TURTLE TIME.
AGAIN, ALL THE PROGRAMS ABOUT SELF-REGULATION ARE WELCOME AND THEY PROVIDE SOME REALLY WONDERFUL OUTREACH FOR US.
LET'S CELEBRATE A FEW THINGS IN CONCLUSION.
I THINK I JUST HAVE TO START WITH STAFF AND FAMILY FAMILIES, SOME OF WHICH OVERLAP.
WE DO RECRUIT FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AND THAT'S WONDERFUL.
I THINK SOMETIMES WE HEAR FROM OUR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO BECOME EMPLOYEES THAT THEY HAVE GROWN IN THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHALLENGES OF SCHOOLS AND THE CHALLENGES OF MANAGING MORE THAN ONE OR TWO CHILDREN AT A TIME BECAUSE WE'RE ACCUSTOMED AS PARENTS AS BEING ABLE TO MANAGE A 5-YEAR-OLD AND 24, 5-YEAR-OLDS LOOKS DIFFERENT.
THE MUTUAL EMPATHY AND THE ABILITY TO COLLABORATE GROWS WHEN WE HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS THAT WORK IN OUR SCHOOLS, AND OF COURSE, WE AFFORD THE OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR EMPLOYEES TO BRING THEIR CHILDREN TO OUR SCHOOLS.
THAT'S ALSO SOMETHING THAT WE APPRECIATE.
WE JUST HAVE A STRONG SENSE OF VOYAGER CULTURE.
I WILL HUMBLE BRAG THAT I FEEL LIKE WHEN WE HAVE VISITORS TO OUR CAMPUS.
WE OFTEN HEAR ABOUT THE VIBE OR THE FEEL OF OUR SCHOOL BEING POSITIVE, FRIENDLY, WARM, AND CALM, AND THAT'S GREAT FEEDBACK FOR US.
YOU PROMOTE THROUGH PROBLEM-SOLVING AND LISTENING AND CARING AND OUR STAFF ARE ACCUSTOMED TO TAKING CARE OF ONE ANOTHER.
THAT PRECEDED ME. THERE'S STRONG CULTURES OF JUST WORKING TOGETHER ON OUR LITTLE ISLANDS BECAUSE WE ARE A LITTLE BIT DOWN THERE AND OFTEN WE COOK MEALS THERE BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE RESTAURANTS AROUND THE BLOCK.
THERE'S JUST A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAPPEN, I THINK EMBEDDED ON THE CAMPUS, AND THAT FEELING IS STRONG.
I THINK CONSISTENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IS SOMETHING THAT WE BOTH CELEBRATE AND WANT TO BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN.
WE ARE APPRECIATIVE OF THE ADD-ON ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT SUCH AS OUR BAND AND CHOIR AND SPANISH INNOVATION LAB AND VAPAR,
[01:25:02]
THANKS TO DI DIO AND CORONADO SCHOOLS FOUNDATION.THEN THERE'S JUST A LAUNDRY LIST OF OTHER THINGS THAT WE'VE WATCHED GROW AND IMPROVE OUR SCHOOL OVER TIME.
I THINK WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT SCHOOL CULTURE, AND SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WE'VE HAD WITH RELATIONSHIPS AND INTERACTIONS, JUST THE NEED TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP A CLEAR MESSAGE ABOUT HOW WE ACCEPT AND INCLUDE ALL CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, ALL INDIVIDUALS, RECOGNIZING DIFFERENCE AND DIVERSITY AND BEING ABLE TO BE MORE TRANSPARENT AND INTENTIONAL ABOUT THAT.
WE'VE ENLISTED THE SUPPORT OF THE NATIONAL CONFLICT RESOLUTION CENTER IN SOME TRAININGS THIS YEAR SO THAT WE HAVE SOME COMMON LANGUAGE IN RESPONSE TO STUDENTS AND KNOW HOW TO HELP SUPPORT THEIR RELATIONSHIPS AND UPSTANDARD TRAININGS, ETC.
OUR SALTY SALTWATER, SEA AIR SCHOOL RUSTS EASILY, SO OUR FENCING AND OUR DOORS AND ANYTHING METAL, OUR OUTDOOR TABLES.
ALL THOSE THINGS ARE SUBJECT TO NEEDS FOR REPLACEMENT.
WE'RE HAVING SOME UPCOMING LOOKS AT THAT.
WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE NEW CARPETS IN OUR CLASSROOMS. THOSE ARE ALL THINGS THAT WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO.
THEN AN AREA OF GROWTH AND PART OF OUR SPSA PLAN IS JUST THE OPPORTUNITY TO INCLUDE MORE AND MORE FAMILY MEMBERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN OUR SCHOOL.
NOTWITHSTANDING SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF POLICIES THAT REQUIRES PEOPLE TO HAVE TB TESTS AND FINGERPRINTS, ETC, BUT WE ARE PLANNING PTO MEETINGS THAT INCLUDE TOPICS OF INTEREST FOR FAMILIES TO DRAW THEM IN.
THE LAST MEETING INCLUDED SOME READING ANALYSIS, AND WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING A DISCUSSION ABOUT INCLUSION AND EQUITY PRACTICES.
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOL.
THANK YOU FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF PRESENTING TO YOU, AND I WELCOME ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE.
THANK YOU TO SUPPORTERS WHO ARE HERE TODAY.
>> YES. THANK YOU, SILVER STRAND, AND ALL THE STAFF.
IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 7.3 AT THIS TIME?
>> TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? YES.
>> I'M UP. THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL BRIEF.
I'M ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY LIKES THE VIBE DOWN THERE.
[LAUGHTER] THEY SAY THAT ORGANIZATIONS TEND TO TAKE ON THE PERSONALITY OF THEIR LEADER.
I THINK THAT WONDERFUL VIBE CAN BE CONTRIBUTED DIRECTLY TO YOU.
THANK YOU FOR THAT. YOU HAVE HAD CONTINUED SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE OUT OF YOUR CHILDREN DOWN THERE.
I'D IMAGINE IF YOU RACKED AND STACKED ALL THE TITLE I SCHOOLS IN THE STATE, I THINK SILVER STRAND WOULD BE WAY UP OFF THE CHART AT THE TOP.
ON SLIDE 9, YOU TALKED ABOUT CUSD MATH.
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE BRIDGES MATH CURRICULUM THAT'S IN THE SIXTH YEAR, OR YOU THINK MAYBE YOU WANT TO TRY SOMETHING ELSE BECAUSE YOU MENTIONED SOME CONCERNS ABOUT MATH?
>> I'M NOT CONCERNED WITH THE CURRICULUM PERSONALLY.
I WILL SAY, IN FACT, I THINK THAT THERE ARE SO MANY PARTS OF THIS CURRICULUM THAT OUR TEACHERS DO EXPRESS LIKE YOU CAN'T IMPLEMENT ALL OF IT COMPLETELY.
THAT SAID, THERE'S LOTS TO STILL LEARN, BUT I THINK THAT THIS CURRICULUM IS EXCITING, AND I THINK IT INCLUDES COMPONENTS THAT ARE REALLY IMPORTANT FOR UNDERSTANDING NUMBERS AND MANIPULATING THEM AND BEING ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THEM.
I THINK THAT WE ARE SEEING THE IMPACT OF THAT CURRICULUM.
I THINK I WOULD GO BACK TO THAT PLACE OF COLLABORATION AND ALIGNMENT AND LOOKING AT OUR DATA TO ENSURE THAT WE'RE RESPONSIVE TO THE SKILLS THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SHOWING US THEY STILL NEED WORK ON.
WE DO HAVE THOSE DATA MEETINGS, AND I THINK BEING RESPONSIVE TO THE DATA IS PROBABLY THE NEXT BEST STEP FOR US CONTINUING TO DO THAT BECAUSE WE HAVE THAT PRACTICE EMBEDDED.
>> THANK YOU. MORE OF A NEW GUY QUESTION, PROBABLY.
YOU TALKED ABOUT CHALLENGES AND NEEDS, FIRST QUESTION, I GUESS, FOR CONTINUED DEFINITION OF EVOLUTION OF INCLUSION MODEL,
[01:30:04]
CAN YOU FLESH THAT OUT A LITTLE BIT MORE? THEN AGAIN, THIS IS PART OF THE NEW GUY QUESTION.HOW CAN WE HELP YOU THEN? IF THAT'S A NEED, IS THERE SOMETHING THAT THE BOARD COULD DO BETTER? WE WALKED DOWN THIS PATH TOGETHER A FEW YEARS BACK.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THINGS HAVE CHANGED A BIT.
IF I UNDERSTAND THIS INCLUSION PIECE, IS WHEN YOU HAVE FOLKS THAT ARE ON IEPS, INCLUDING THEM IN THE GENERAL CLASS POPULATION, SO THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT AND IT'S A STRUGGLE. CAN YOU FLUSH THAT OUT?
>> I DON'T LIKE TO BE POLAR ABOUT IT BECAUSE I THINK THERE ARE POLAR ENVIRONMENTS WHERE A STUDENT IS NOT IN A GEN ED ENVIRONMENT AT ALL, AND THEN THERE ARE ENVIRONMENTS WHERE THERE'S MAXIMAL INCLUSION DESPITE THE NATURE OF A STUDENT'S DISABILITY, THEY MAY BE IN A GEN ED ENVIRONMENT ALL DAY LONG.
I AM LOOKING AT THAT POLAR MODEL TO UNDERSTAND WHAT SUPPORTS THAT.
QUESTIONS THAT COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND TEACHERS ARE ASKING ARE WHEN IS IT BENEFICIAL TO THE STUDENT TO BE PART OF THE GEN ED ENVIRONMENT AND WHEN MIGHT IT BE BENEFICIAL FOR A STUDENT TO RECEIVE SUPPORT IN ANOTHER SETTING? THEN I THINK WE'RE ALL ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT WHY ARE THOSE THINGS TRUE AND WHAT DO WE NEED FOR THAT TO BE DIFFERENT? IF WE WANT INCLUSION, WHICH MY HEART AND SOUL SAYS, INCLUDING STUDENTS MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN A COMMUNITY AND IN INDIVIDUALS LIVES.
BUT IF WE ARE DEFINING OUR PROGRAM AS SUCH, I THINK THERE ARE SPECIFIC SUPPORTS AND RESOURCES THAT NEED TO BE PART OF THAT.
I THINK WE'RE ON A JOURNEY TO MATCH THOSE THINGS.
>> AGAIN, STILL A FEW YEARS OUT, BUT AS WE LOOK AND THOSE ARE THE STAFFING THINGS AND I THINK THAT THINGS THAT WE COULD LOOK AT AND AS YOU BALANCE THAT IT'S A TOUGH BALANCE.
LIKE I SAID, WE FLIP THROUGH IT AND YOU KNOW HOW FAR CAN YOU GO WITHOUT DETRACTING.
IF I LOOK BACK, LOOK LIKE YOUR SPECIAL ED SCORES WERE PRETTY GOOD ON SOME OF THOSE TESTS.
>> WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THAT. A LOT OF COLLABORATION IN WORK THAT'S HAPPENING.
I WOULD JUST SAY I KNOW THERE'S A NEED FOR US TO CONTINUE HAVING TOUGH DISCUSSIONS AROUND HOW WE BEST SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS AND WHAT IT TAKES TO DO SO.
>> I LOOK FORWARD ON THAT JOURNEY WITH YOU AND HEAR HOW IT FLUSHES OUT THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. I HAD A QUESTION ABOUT THE READING INTERVENTION WITH ELLEN CODY.
SHE STARTS AT TK OR KINDERGARTEN?
>> KINDERGARTEN. HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED BECAUSE THAT'S A PULL OUT PROGRAM.
STUDENTS LEAVE THE CLASSROOM TO GO TO HER ROOM FOR THAT.
HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED? ARE THEY THE LOWEST PERFORMING STUDENTS IN THE GRADE OR IF THEY'RE STUDENTS WHO ARE RECEIVING SPECIAL ED SERVICES, DO THEY STAY IN THE CLASSROOM WITH THE SPECIAL ED TEACHER?
>> OUR CO-TEACH MODEL RIGHT NOW IS PRIMARILY FOR MATH, ALTHOUGH WE CO-TEACH IN WRITING FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS.
I THINK WE HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT MAYBE SPED TEACHERS COULD PUSH INTO RUN READING GROUPS IN THE GEN ED ENVIRONMENT TOO.
ONE REASON WE PULL OUT IS JUST IT'S QUIETER TO PROVIDE THAT.
IF YOU IMAGINE THAT EVERYONE REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY'RE GEN ED OR SPED OR HAVING SMALL GROUP SUPPORT, THE STUDENTS WITH AN IEP ARE GETTING THAT SMALL GROUP READING SUPPORT WITH AN ED SPECIALIST.
THE GEN ED STUDENTS WHOSE SKILLS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS MATCHING THE INTERVENTION THAT ELLEN OFFERS, GO TO ELLEN.
BUT WE DO THOSE SCREENERS MULTIPLE TIMES PER YEAR, SO THERE'S RECALIBRATION OF THOSE GROUPS, AND I THINK WE ALSO DISCUSSED AT OUR READING PRESENTATION LAST WEEK FOR PARENTS THAT A GIVEN GRADE LEVELS OVERALL ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL MAY BE HIGH ENOUGH THAT THE STUDENTS GOING TO ELLEN ARE NOT ACTUALLY VERY FAR BELOW GRADE LEVEL, BUT THERE'S JUST THE CAPACITY TO SERVE A GROUP OF STUDENTS USING ELLEN TO SUPPORT THEIR SKILLS WHILE THE TEACHER IS MEETING WITH OTHER GROUPS IN HER OWN CLASSROOM.
WE UTILIZE THAT RESOURCE FOR THE STUDENTS MOST IN NEED AT THE GRADE LEVEL, SOME OF WHOM HAVE CRITICAL NEEDS AND SOME OF WHOM DON'T.
>> NOTE THAT THERE WAS A REDUCTION IN THE READING INTERVENTION SUPPORTS FOR THIS YEAR.
[01:35:06]
HOW HAS THAT IMPACTED THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS YOU'VE BEEN ABLE TO SERVE?>> IT HAS IMPACTED THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO SERVE BECAUSE WE ESSENTIALLY HAD 1.7 READING SPECIALISTS LAST YEAR AND WE ONLY HAVE ONE NOW.
I THINK THE IMPACT HAS ALSO BEEN FELT IN THE CLASSROOM IN TERMS OF IF I HAVE 15 STUDENTS I NEED TO MEET WITH IN MY CLASS BECAUSE 10 OF THEM ARE BEING SERVED ELSEWHERE.
I CAN HAVE 20 MINUTE MEETINGS WITH FIVE STUDENTS EACH FOR FIVE DAYS A WEEK.
IF I HAVE MORE THAN THAT, I MAY SHORTEN THE TIME THAT I'M MEETING WITH THOSE STUDENTS AS A GEN ED TEACHER.
IT DOES IMPACT EVEN STUDENTS WHO CAN USE THE PUSHING AT THE TOP.
>> LAST QUESTION. HOW DOES THE PUSH IN MODEL WORK FOR THE SPECIAL ED TEACHER THAT'S COMING IN TO DO DURING MATH TIME? BECAUSE THERE'S ONE SPECIAL ED TEACHER, AND THERE'S HOW MANY CLASSROOMS SHE HAS TO GO INTO?
>> IT IS FOUR OUT OF FIVE DAYS, SOMETIMES FIVE DAYS A WEEK, AND OUR SPECIAL EDUCATORS ARE SCHEDULED TO WORK WITH THE GRADE LEVELS IN THEIR MATH CLASSES SO THAT THERE'S NOT A CONFLICT.
MOST OF OUR SPECIAL EDUCATORS SERVE TWO GRADE LEVELS, SOME SERVE THREE, AND THEY CO-TEACH IN THOSE CLASSROOMS STACKED IN THE DAY.
WHEN THEY GO INTO THOSE CLASSROOMS, THEY MAY PULL STUDENTS WHO ARE IN NEED IN A SMALL GROUP, ONE DAY.
ANOTHER DAY, THERE MAY BE GROUP ROTATIONS SO THAT MAYBE ONE GROUP IS DOING INDEPENDENT WORK OR PRACTICE, ANOTHER GROUP IS WORKING WITH THE CLASSROOM TEACHER, ANOTHER GROUP IS WORKING WITH THE CO-TEACHER AND THEN THEY ROTATE.
THERE'S SEVERAL MODELS AND OUR TEACHER HAS BEEN TRAINED ON THOSE MODELS AND THE CO-TEACHERS MEET TO PLAN WHAT MODEL THEY'RE GOING TO USE FOR WHICH SKILL AND WHAT THE STUDENT'S NEEDS ARE IN A REALLY ORGANIC COOL WAY.
LOTS OF DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES THERE.
>> I'M SORRY, AND I LIED. I DO HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION.
YOU HAVE A NEW MFLC THIS YEAR, AND HOW IS SHE WORKING WITH STUDENTS AND STAFF AND HOW'S THAT?
>> SHE'S THE THIRD NEW MFLC, WE'VE HAD TURNOVER IN THE LAST THREE YEARS.
IN MY VIEW, IN THIS ROLE, HITTING THE RUNNING MEANS BEING VISIBLE AND ACCESSIBLE AND SOMEBODY THE STUDENTS RELATE TO.
ONE THING SHE'S DONE IS OPEN UP OUR CONNECTIONS COUNSELING ROOM DURING RECESS TIMES FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE AN ALTERNATE PLACE TO HANG OUT AND ALSO ACCESS THE SUPPORT OF AN ADULT.
SHE RUNS GROUPS, SHE DOES INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING, AND SHE ALSO HAS MEETINGS WITH PARENTS.
I THINK SHE'S FILLING UP HER DAY SERVING OUR STUDENTS.
>> PRINCIPAL MOORE, THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRESENTATION. IT WAS WONDERFUL.
YOU GUYS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB DOWN AT SILVER STRAND.
THE PERFORMANCE SCORES AND EVERYTHING, ESPECIALLY WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS, IT'S REALLY REMARKABLE.
JUST TO CLARIFY, THE MEET OR EXCEEDED THE STANDARDS, THAT'S FOR ALL STUDENTS IN THE STATE IN THAT GRADE.
IT'S NOT A SPECIAL CATEGORY FOR PEOPLE WITH IEPS OR IT IS ALL STUDENTS?
>> MATTER EXCEEDED AND THAT'S REALLY REMARKABLE.
ONE STAT THAT CAUGHT MY EYE WAS ON THE SCIENCE, AND I THINK WE ACTUALLY TALKED ABOUT THIS ADDRESSING THAT AND THEN HOPEFULLY WITH SOME OF THE DODEA RESOURCES THAT WILL BE ADDRESSED.
THE FINAL THING I'D SAY IS WHEN IT COMES TO THE DASHBOARD REVIEW ON THE SUSPENSION RATE, AT LEAST FROM MY STANDPOINT, AS LONG AS THE DISCIPLINE ACTION GUIDE IS BEING FOLLOWED AND THE DISCIPLINE IS PROGRESSIVE, AND OF COURSE, IT'S APPROPRIATE AND HAVING QUALITY ASSURANCE, I FULLY SUPPORT THE TOUGH DECISIONS THAT NEED TO BE MADE EVEN IF SOMETHING ON THE DASHBOARD IS READ, IT'S UNFORTUNATE, BUT IN MY OPINION, NECESSARY FOR THE SCHOOL. THANK YOU.
ITEM 7.4, DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT UPDATES.
[7.4 Deputy Superintendent Updates (5 min. + Board Discussion)]
[01:40:02]
>> THANK YOU PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
I KNOW THE TRUSTEES AND COMMUNITY HAVE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT SALAMANCA'S REPORT.
HE'S AVAILABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE.
>> NO UPDATES? OKAY. IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON THIS ITEM AT THIS TIME? TRUSTEES, QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? I THINK A BIG ONE IS THE ATTENDANCE.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE GOING TO SAY IT LOOKS TERRIBLE.
>> ARE YOU GOING TO JUMP IN MY ATTENDANCE? [INAUDIBLE] TALK ABOUT ATTENDANCE.
I WANT TO ASK A QUESTION ABOUT IT.
>> I SAW THERE'S TWO PRESENTATIONS.
THERE'S MONTH 3 AND THEN THERE'S MONTH 4, AND IT JUST LOOKS EVEN WORSE.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT 12TH GRADE IS DOING OVER THERE, MR. [INAUDIBLE] [LAUGHTER].
>> SENIOR [INAUDIBLE] IS KICKING IN 94.7% IN MONTH 4 ATTENDANCE, AND THEN MIDDLE SCHOOL, SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE, YELLOW AND RED.
I DON'T KNOW IF WE CAN PULL IT UP, MS. SHE'S WORKING.
OVERALL AT ALL THE SITES, IT'S JUST, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY OTHER THAN LIKE SOLID YELLOW AND RED, VILLAGE ELEMENTARY, SILVER STRAND, CMS. NINTH GRADERS, STAY STRONG. YELLOW, GREEN.
>> I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS ON THAT, MR. SALAMANCA.
IT'S JUST A GENERAL, I GUESS, FOR EVERYBODY, GET YOUR KID TO SCHOOL.
>> APPRECIATE THAT. [LAUGHTER] AT THE RISK OF GETTING AHEAD OF TRUSTEE CAVANAUGH'S PROBABLE COMMENTS, RED, GREEN AND YELLOW, WE TYPICALLY HAVE A BENCHMARK OF WHAT OUR GOAL IS AND WHAT RED, YELLOW AND GREEN ARE.
IN ORDER TO GET INTO A GREEN, YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE IN A 97% ATTENDANCE RATE.
OUR YELLOWS FALL INTO 96% AND RED IS BELOW 96%.
ONE OF THE MANY REASONS WHY ATTENDANCE IS AN AREA OF FOCUS, NOT ONLY JUST HAVING TO DO WITH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND STUDENTS MISSING VALUABLE LEARNING TIME IN FRONT OF OUR INCREDIBLE INSTRUCTORS.
BUT ATTENDANCE, AS LONG AS WE'RE ON THE LCFF IS A MAJOR COMPONENT OF OUR FUNDING.
THE REASON WHY WE HAVE 97% AS OUR GOAL IS BECAUSE WE HAVE HISTORICALLY HIT THAT NUMBER IN THE PAST.
HOWEVER, OUR FUNDING IS PROJECTED TO BE AT A 96%.
ATTENDANCE RATE, WE'RE RIGHT THERE, BUT VERY ASTUTE OBSERVATION THAT IT WENT DOWN FROM MONTH 3 TO MONTH 4, AND WE EXPECT THAT TREND TO CONTINUE.
IT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR. BUT DEFINITELY WE DON'T WANT TO LET UP ON THE GAS.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT BECAUSE FUNDING IS SO VERY CLOSELY TIED TO OUR ATTENDANCE, WE STILL WANT TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO COME.
IF YOU'RE UNABLE TO COME FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER, WE DO HAVE ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES VIA ATTENDANCE RECOVERY IF YOU WANT TO COME TO SATURDAY SCHOOL, OR WHEN WE ROLL OUT VERY SHORTLY, OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TO HAVE ADDITIONAL ENRICHMENT AND ATTENDANCE OPPORTUNITIES DURING THE WEEK OF SPRING BREAK FREE OF CHARGE, AND ALSO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF INDEPENDENT STUDY OPTIONS.
IF YOU PLAN ON BEING OUT, IF YOU KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO BE ABSENT AT LEAST ONE DAY, PLEASE CONTACT OUR FRONT OFFICE OR YOUR STUDENTS TEACHER TO REQUEST AN INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACT.
THAT'S ANOTHER WAY THAT WE'RE ABLE TO INCREASE THIS ATTENDANCE PERCENTAGE AND ENSURE ONGOING FUNDING TO OUR DISTRICT.
>> I DID HAVE A QUESTION. WITH REGARDS TO THE ABSENCES, LOOKING AT IT FROM A CALENDAR STANDPOINT, IS IT THE WEEK BEFORE THE HOLIDAY BREAK? IS IT SOMETHING AROUND THANKSGIVING OR IS IT JUST SCATTERED ALL AROUND AND YOU CAN'T REALLY MAKE AN ASSOCIATION WITH THAT?
>> THERE IS A CORRELATION BETWEEN THREE-DAY WEEKENDS BREAKS.
IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXTEND VACATION.
THERE DEFINITELY IS A CORRELATION WITH INCREASED ABSENCES SURROUNDING THOSE OF THREE OR FOUR-DAY WEEKENDS, BUT ALSO SOME OF THE EXTENDED BREAKS AS WELL.
WE TYPICALLY SEE HIGHER ABSENCE RATES AROUND THOSE TIMES.
OF COURSE, THERE MAY BE OPPORTUNITIES TO ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO COME.
IF A TEACHER IS HOSTING A FINAL AND IT'S NOT AN EXCUSE ABSENCE, THEN THERE ISN'T AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE UP THAT FINAL.
THERE ARE WAYS TO INCENTIVIZE ATTENDANCE EVEN CLOSE TO THOSE HOLIDAY AREAS.
[01:45:04]
>> A FRESHMAN EITHER HAVE A FEAR FACTOR OR A FUN FACTOR.
>> I'M NOT SURE WHAT THAT IS. WE SHOULD LOOK AT THAT.
MY ONLY QUESTION OR CONCERN IS THAT LOOKING AT THE POOL AND WHEN I SEE CRACKS IN CONCRETE SLABS, I'M WONDERING IF THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME BIG EXPENSES COMING UP.
>>> OR I KNOW WE DO OUR BEST TO DO ROUTINE MAINTENANCE TO TRY TO PREVENT ANY OF THAT BUT.
>> YES, POOLS AND OPERATING FACILITIES IN GENERAL, VERY EXPENSIVE.
THIS IS OUR ATTEMPT TO CONTINUE WITH OUR ONGOING MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS, RE PLASTERING, AND DOING SOME OF THOSE MORE MAJOR REPAIRS WOULD BE MORE COSTLY THAN WHAT I THINK THE BUDGET CAN AFFORD AT THIS MOMENT.
BUT WE ARE FOR LACK OF A BETTER DESCRIPTION WORKING ON BAND AID FIXES UNTIL WE'RE ABLE TO THINK A LITTLE BIT MORE LONG TERM, ESPECIALLY WITH BASIC AID.
>> JUST GOING BACK REAL QUICKLY TO THAT ATTENDANCE.
DOES ANY OF THAT DATA REFLECT THAT'S JUST THE RAW DATA AND THEN IT WOULD CHANGE PRESUMABLY GOING UP PEOPLE MAKING UP SOME OF THOSE ABSENCES?
>> YES. WE HAVE HAD OPPORTUNITIES BOTH AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE HIGH SCHOOL FOR SATURDAY ATTENDANCE RECOVERY.
THOSE ARE REFLECTED IF THEY'VE ALREADY OCCURRED.
WE KNOW THAT ESPECIALLY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, THERE TEND TO BE QUITE A FEW MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THESE SATURDAY ATTENDANCE RECOVERY AND STUDY SESSIONS, ESPECIALLY WITH OUR EDUCATORS THAT PROVIDE ADDITIONAL STUDY SESSIONS, ESPECIALLY LEADING UP TO AP TESTING AND OTHER TESTINGS.
WE EXPECT TO HAVE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES INCREASE AND POTENTIALLY INCREASING THE PERCENTAGES IN THE COMING MONTHS.
>> BUT AS WE LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS, THAT'S THE BEST DATA WE HAVE, THAT INCLUDES RECOVERY.
>> I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T UNDERSELL YOURSELF.
I SELL ALL THE GREAT WORK ON THE SWIMMING POOL.
A LOT HAS BEEN DONE AT THE VILLAGE ELEMENTARY MULTIPURPOSE ROOM COOL ZONE.
WERE YOU GOING TO BRIEF THAT WHEN IT'S DONE OR?
>> WE WERE PLANNING ON BRIEFING THAT WHEN IT'S DONE.
>> I DON'T WANT TO STEAL YOUR THUNDER.[OVERLAPPING]
>> WE APPRECIATE THAT AND THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD SEGUE FOR SUPERINTENDENTS LONG RANGE PLAN UPDATE, BUT CONSISTENT WITH NEW LAWS AND REGULATIONS AND CONSISTENT WITH OUR INTEREST IN ENSURING OPPORTUNITIES FOR INSTRUCTION TO CONTINUE, WE ARE LOOKING AT THE VARIOUS CAMPUSES ON WAYS THAT WE'RE ABLE TO ADD COOL ZONES OR HVAC ON OUR CAMPUSES.
WE STARTED THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING A COMPREHENSIVE HVAC SYSTEM AT THE VILLAGE MULTIPURPOSE ROOM.
IT'S ALL BUT DONE EXCEPT FOR THE FINISHING TOUCHES AND WE'RE PRETTY HAPPY WITH THE RESULT AT THE VILLAGE MPR.
ALSO SCHEDULED IS THE SILVER STRAND MULTIPURPOSE ROOM, AND WE EXPECT THAT PROJECT TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
[7.5 Superintendent Updates (5 min. + Board Discussion)]
SUPERINTENDENT UPDATES, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
THIS DOCUMENT HAS COME BEFORE THE BOARD.
I BELIEVE THIS IS THE THIRD VIEWING IN AN ONGOING EFFORT TO ALIGN OUR EARLY RELEASE, ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION AROUND HEAT DAYS.
WE HAVE COLLECTED DATA, PRESENTED DATA TO THE BOARD ABOUT HISTORICAL TEMPERATURES IN CUSD.
WE HAVE TAKEN MEASURES TO ALIGN OUR ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION TO NEW OSHA REQUIREMENTS REGARDING COOL ZONES AND TEMPERATURE.
WE FEEL THE TIMING OF THIS FIRST READ IS APPROPRIATE WITH A FEW OTHER DISTRICT INITIATIVES.
DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT MENTIONED SOME OF THE COOL ZONES THAT WE'RE INSTALLING INTO OUR CAMPUSES.
AS MANY OF YOU MAY KNOW, WE'RE ALSO CURRENTLY ENGAGED IN A CALENDAR STUDY.
THERE'S A CALENDAR COMMITTEE LOOKING AT THIS, AND ONE OF THE COMMENTS THAT FREQUENTLY TAKES PLACE IN THOSE SESSIONS IS STARTING EARLIER IN AUGUST, THERE'S CONCERN AROUND AN INCREASE IN THOSE HEAT DAYS.
WE FEEL THE TIMING OF UPDATING THIS POLICY TO REFLECT THE OSHA REQUIREMENTS AND PROVIDING SOME CLARIFICATION AROUND HOW AND WHEN WE WILL CAPTURE ANTICIPATED TEMPERATURES AND HUMIDITY IS REFLECTED IN THIS DOCUMENT.
AGAIN, THE BOARD HAS SEEN THIS, I HAVE NOT PRESENTED IT YET AS A FIRST READ.
THIS WILL COME BACK BEFORE THE BOARD IN FEBRUARY FOR ACTION, AND THE PURPOSE OF INCLUDING IT THIS EVENING IS TO SOLICIT ANY ADDITIONAL FEEDBACK FOR INCLUSION PRIOR TO FEBRUARY.
>> THANK YOU. IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 7.5 AT THIS TIME?
[01:50:04]
TRUSTEES, QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?>> I KNOW THAT THERE'S BEEN A CHALLENGE WITH AIR CONDITIONING AREAS ON CAMPUS THAT ARE REALLY HOT, TRYING TO HAVE COOL ZONES, AND I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS POLICY IS TAKING A STEP IN THAT DIRECTION TO ADDRESS THAT.
IT'S NOT GOING TO FIX EVERYTHING.
WE CAN'T DO EVERYTHING ON DAY ONE WHEN WE GET TO BASIC AID, BUT I'M GLAD TO SEE THAT THE TEMPERATURE HAS COME DOWN AND HOPEFULLY THIS IS LIKE I SAID A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND OTHER CHANGES CAN BE MADE AS NEEDED IN MOVING FORWARD.
>> THANK YOU. MOVING ON TO ITEM EIGHT, FIRST READING,
[8.1 Adoption of Instructional Materials for Freshmen Islander Experience Course]
ADOPTION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS FOR FRESHMAN I LEARNER EXPERIENCE COURSE. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
THIS IS A FIRST READ FOR THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS BEING USED IN OUR FIE COURSE.
AS YOU MAY RECALL, THIS HAS BEEN A LONG TERM VISION OF OUR PRINCIPAL AND OUR DISTRICT TO HAVE A FRESHMAN ORIENTATION TO ORIENT OUR STUDENTS WITH RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO THEM AS THEY LOOK AT THEIR FOUR YEAR JOURNEY IN HIGH SCHOOL.
THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR WE'VE OFFERED FIE.
IT'S A NINE WEEK LONG COURSE, AND DR. BATTLE IS AVAILABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT THIS FIRST READ.
>> THANK YOU, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
GOOD EVENING, GOVERNING BOARD.
I KNOW YOU HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW THE BRIEF REPORT.
THIS LOOKS DIFFERENT THAN OUR USUAL CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS, BEING THAT IT IS A HOME GROWN ELECTIVE COURSE FOR OUR FRESHMAN.
OUR INSTRUCTORS HAVE SPENT TIME CALLING RESOURCES FROM DIFFERENT AREAS TO MEET THE GOALS OF THE COURSE.
I DO WANT TO FIRST, RECOGNIZE OUR INSTRUCTORS, KELLY SAILORS, AND JENNIFER LANDRY.
I KNOW THEY HAVE A STRONG COLLABORATION AND HAS SPENT A LOT OF TIME PULLING TOGETHER RESOURCES BASED ON THE DIFFERENT TOPICS THAT THEY COVER IN CLASS.
I ALSO WANT TO RECOGNIZE OUR COUNSELING DEPARTMENT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, THEY ARE FREQUENTLY DOING COUNSELING PRESENTATIONS IN THE CLASS TO MEET THE GOALS, TO EDUCATE OUR STUDENTS ON COLLEGE AND CAREER OPTIONS.
THEY UTILIZE ZELLO FOR INTEREST SURVEYS THAT ARE PERSONALIZED TO THE STUDENTS, A THROUGH G REQUIREMENTS, CHS GRAD REQUIREMENTS, AND SO FORTH.
OUR COUNSELORS PUSH IN A LOT TO DO THOSE TYPES OF PRESENTATIONS IN ADDITION TO THE OTHER TOPICS LISTED HERE ON THE REPORT.
THE MAIN INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS THAT THEY'RE USING FOR THE COURSE WERE LINKED IN THE REPORT, UTILIZING THE MEDIA LITERACY RESOURCES LISTING FROM THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, AND THEN ALSO COMMON SENSE EDUCATION, WHICH IS A FREE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE FOR SCHOOLS, AND IT HAS GRADE LEVEL APPROPRIATE UNITS ON MANY DIFFERENT TOPICS, ONE BEING DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP AND DIGITAL LITERACY.
THEY'VE UTILIZED THE GRADE NINE COLLECTION FROM THAT SOURCE, AND THEN THE FINANCIAL LITERACY RESOURCES THAT ARE LISTED HERE.
I ALSO WANT TO NOTE IN ADDITION TO WHAT SUPERINTENDENT SHARED ABOUT THE VISION OF THIS COURSE, IT'S BEEN A VISION OF OURS FOR A WHILE.
IT ALSO IS STARTING TO ALIGN WITH OUR PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE AND THE VISION FROM THAT PLANNING THAT WAS THE CULMINATION OF 60,000 DATA POINTS.
IT DID HIGHLIGHT MEDIA LITERACY, DIGITAL LITERACY, AS WELL AS FINANCIAL LITERACY CAME OUT OF THAT.
NOT INCLUDED IN THE REPORT, AND I JUST RECEIVED MORE DATA TODAY FROM OUR COUNSELING DEPARTMENT AT THE END OF EACH NINE WEEKS.
THEY ARE DOING A STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY.
WHAT TOPICS DID YOU FIND MOST INTERESTING, WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST WE INCLUDE JUST GATHERING FEEDBACK, AND IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING GOING THROUGH THE COMMENTS.
THEY'RE ALL OVER THE MAP, BUT STUDENTS, OVERALL, I CAN SAY FOUND IT VALUABLE.
THEY SAID, NOW THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS,
[01:55:03]
THEY KNOW WHAT THEY NEED TO DO FOR UCA THROUGH G. SOME OF THEM REALLY APPRECIATED THE FINANCIAL LESSONS ON WHAT IT REALLY MEANS TO BUY A CAR, SO THEY WENT THROUGH A WHOLE SEARCH FOR ANY CAR ON THE INTERNET.NOW LET'S GO THROUGH AND WHAT WOULD IT REALLY TAKE FOR YOU TO OWN THAT CAR AND SO THEY'RE REALLY APPRECIATING THE APPLICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE THEY'RE LEARNING AND ALSO THE COLLEGE READINESS INFORMATION.
ALSO, LASTLY, THE MATERIAL LIST REALLY THIS WITH LINKS HAS BEEN AVAILABLE AND WILL STAY AVAILABLE UNTIL OUR NEXT BOARD MEETING FOR ANY PUBLIC COMMUNITY MEMBER TO COME AND LEAVE COMMENTS AND REVIEW AND AS OF TODAY, THERE WERE NO COMMENTS.
>> THANK YOU. IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 8.1 AT THIS TIME? TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> I DON'T KNOW IF YOU ASSOCIATE WITH A LOT OF FRESHMEN OR NOT.
MAYBE NOT BUT [LAUGHTER]HAVE YOU HEARD ANYTHING FROM STUDENTS ABOUT THIS CLASS?
>> I HAVEN'T HEARD MUCH, I'VE MORE TALKS WITH MISS MELINA ABOUT IT.
BUT IT SOUNDS REALLY FUN, I WISH I HAD THIS[LAUGHTER] I WAS A SMART GUY WHO BOUGHT A 23-YEAR-OLD CAR, SO I WISH I LEARNED HOW TO BUY A GOOD ONE EARLY, BUT IT SOUNDS REALLY EXCITING, I WISH I HAD THAT WHEN I WAS A FRESHMAN.
>> OKAY. ITEM NINE, THERE WERE NO ITEMS PULLED FROM THE CONSOLIDATED MOTION FOR CONSENT CALENDAR AND WITH THAT, WE WILL TAKE A QUICK FIVE MINUTE BREAK.
HELLO, WE ARE BACK IN SESSION.
[10.1 Public Comments on Non-Agendized Items]
ITEM 10, PUBLIC COMMENTS ON NON AGENDIZED ITEMS. ANYONE WISHING TO SPEAK TO A NON AGENDA ITEM OR A CLOSED SESSION ITEM ARE INVITED TO QUEUE BEHIND THE PODIUM AND STATE THEIR NAME AND CITY PRIOR TO SPEAKING.EACH SPEAKER WILL HAVE THREE MINUTES.
IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON A NON AGENDIZED ITEM AT THIS TIME? COME ON DOWN.
>> THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO LISTEN TO ME.
THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO FOR OUR COMMUNITY. REALLY APPRECIATE IT.
I'M NEW BOARD MEMBER OF THE CORONADO PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE FAMILIAR WITH ORGANIZATION, BUT WE USE YOUR FACILITIES EXTENSIVELY AS SHANE, WE'RE PRETTY HIGH MAINTENANCE WHEN IT COMES TO USING THE FACILITIES.[LAUGHTER] BECAUSE I THINK OUR DIRECTOR TRIES TO PUT ON PRETTY COMPLICATED BUT INTERESTING SHOWS, AND THERE'S A BIG DEMAND ON THE FACILITY BECAUSE OF THAT, AND PLANS DO CHANGE.
WE ARE FAIRLY UNDERSTAFFED WITH A LOT OF NEW PEOPLE LIKE ME ON THE BOARD, SO EVEN THOUGH WE'VE BEEN USING THE FACILITY FOR FOUR YEARS, WE'RE IN A TRANSITION PERIOD RIGHT NOW ON THE BOARD.
I DID WANT TO SAY THAT WE'RE NONPROFIT, AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW, AND WE'VE BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL IN THE CPAC.
OUR LAST FIVE CONCERTS HAVE BEEN SOLD OUT, SO IT'S A GOOD VENUE FOR US AND GOING FORWARD, WE WANT TO MAKE OUR PERMANENT HOME AS A TENANT THAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO USE THE FACILITY AND WE PLAN ON DOING FOUR CONCERTS A YEAR IN THAT FACILITY.
THAT'S OUR GOAL. I'VE SENT AN E MAIL OUT TO DIRECTOR KAVANAGH BECAUSE, WE GLOMMED ON TO HER BECAUSE SHE'S BEEN TO A CONCERT AND SHE'S READ ALL OUR LITERATURE THAT WE SENT OUT ON OUR CONSTANT CONTACT EMAIL LIST.
BUT I ALSO SENT AN EMAIL ALSO TO THE PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS.
JUST EXPRESSING OUR DESIRE AS A GROUP, AND AGAIN, I'M REPRESENTING THE BOARD TO MAYBE GET TOGETHER AND HAVE A MEETING WITH SOME OF THE PRINCIPALS INVOLVED AND REALLY EDUCATE US AS THE BOARD, HOW WE CAN HELP WITH ANY SCHEDULING AND ANY ACCESS ISSUES WITH THE VENUE THAT GOING FORWARD.
WE'RE REALLY IN A POSITION WHERE BECOME HAT IN HAND WE NEED THE FACILITY.
WE UNDERSTAND, WE'RE JUST ONE OF MANY THAT WANT TO USE THAT FACILITY, AND WE WANT TO MAKE IT AS PAINLESS FOR YOU AND FOR SHANE.
SHANE SPENT AN HOUR ON THE PHONE TELLING ME HOW IT WORKS, AND THAT WAS PRETTY GENEROUS AT THIS TIME, SO WE REALLY WANT TO BE HELPFUL AND WE WANT TO REALLY IMPROVE OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU.
SHANE HAS GOT MY POINT OF CONTACT INFORMATION, SO FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT TO ME IF THERE'S EVER AN ISSUE I PLAN ON BEING ON THE BOARD FOR A WHILE, I PLAY IN THE ORCHESTRA, TOO.
IF THERE'S ANY ISSUES GOING FORWARD, I THINK I CAN BE A GOOD POINT IN CONTACT, SO I JUST WANT TO INTEREST MY MYSELF AND EXPLAIN WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE EMAIL. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME.
>> ALWAYS. ITEM 10.2, BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS.
[10.2 Board Member Comments]
[02:00:02]
WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO START? TRUSTEE SANDY. TRUSTEE [INAUDIBLE]. THANK YOU.>> I'LL MAKE THIS REALLY QUICK.
I'VE ENJOYED WORKING ON THE FACILITIES MAINTENANCE COMMITTEE.
THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING IS IMPORTANT AND WE STARTED OUT AS LOOKING AT OUR FACILITIES, KNOWING THAT DEFERRED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN DEFERRED FOR MANY YEARS AND WHERE ARE WE GOING FROM THERE.
THEN A LITTLE BIT OF BREAKS ON THE ISSUE BECAUSE UNTIL WE HAVE SOME GUIDING DOCUMENT TO HELP US DETERMINE, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO ADDRESS FIRST.
LIKE YOU SAID, BASIC AID, I DON'T THINK IS GOING TO SOLVE ALL OF OUR ISSUES, ESPECIALLY ON DAY ONE, SO IT'S GOING TO BE A LONG PROCESS THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AT.
HAVING THE PEOPLE ON THE COMMITTEE WITH SO MUCH EXPERIENCE AND LOOKING AT THIS ISSUE FROM ALL ASPECTS HAS BEEN REALLY GOOD.
I APPRECIATE ALL OF THE WORK AND THE COMMENTS THAT WE HAD YESTERDAY AT OUR WORKSHOP, GOING OVER OUR GOVERNANCE HANDBOOK, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SOME BASKETBALL TOMORROW NIGHT.
I HOPE THAT SOMEONE BRINGS ME SOME CINNAMON PLATO NEXT YEAR WHEN THEY MAKE THAT.[LAUGHTER] I THINK WE NEED THAT UP HERE.
>> SAY MUCH, BUT I'VE ALREADY PROVEN THAT TO BE WRONG.
FIRST OF ALL, IT WAS GREAT TO GO OUT SPEAKING OF BASKETBALL.
TRUSTEE SANDY AND I WENT AND SAW UNFORTUNATELY THAT THE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STREAK WAS BROKEN.
IT WAS VALIANT BUT IT REALLY WASN'T THAT CLOSE FOR THAT PARTICULAR TEAM.
BUT LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING THE FOLKS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
I GOT MY FIRST SCHOOL VISIT COMING UP ON JANUARY 30TH.
I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. THERE WAS ONE SIR, THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS PUBLIC SPEAKER.
AS SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN WATCHING THIS BOARD AND NOT JUST BOARD, BUT THE BOARD PROCEEDINGS FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS PRETTY INTENTLY, ONE THING THAT I DIDN'T REALIZE AS MUCH AND I'M JUST GOING TO SAY THIS FOR THE GENERAL AUDIENCE FOR FOLKS THAT ARE OUT THERE.
WE DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF SPEAKERS COMING FORWARD.
BUT AS A PERSON WATCHING, I WAS ALWAYS SAYING, GOSH, IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THE BOARDS LISTENING OR THEY'RE NOT RESPONDING.
THE FACT IS WE'RE NOT REALLY LOW.
I THINK EVERYONE IN THIS AUDIENCE ALREADY KNOWS THAT.
FOR FOLKS THAT ARE WATCHING THOUGH IN THE FUTURE, DON'T TAKE OUR SILENCE AS NOT LISTENING.
IN FACT, A FEW PARENTS BROUGHT UP AN ISSUE A FEW MONTHS AGO THAT HAS CAUSED ME TO START DOING A DEEP DIVE ON THAT ISSUE.
THIS IS A GREAT BUNCH OF FOLKS.
I'VE ALREADY ENJOYED THE BANTER, AND THEY'RE CONCERNED, THEY'RE THOUGHTFUL.
DON'T TAKE THE SILENCE AS BEING IGNORED.
IT'S JUST THE WAY THE SYSTEM WORKS. THAT'S IT. THANKS.
>> THANK YOU. I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A GREAT BREAK.
I DID MY SCHOOL SITE VISIT WITH THE CORONADO MIDDLE SCHOOL WITH PRINCIPAL POLAR JUST A FEW DAYS AGO, AND WE WERE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THE SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES AND TALK ABOUT THE TRITON 3, THEIR TAKE OWNERSHIP, ACT WITH INTEGRITY, AND SHOW RESPECT.
WE'RE ABLE TO DO SOME TOURS OF THE VARIOUS PARTS OF THE SCHOOL IN THE I LAB.
IT WAS GREAT, AND I THANK HER FOR HER HOSPITALITY.
MOVING ON, I JUST WANTED TO ECHO SOME COMMENTS ABOUT THE FINANCIAL PRESSURES OR CONSTRAINTS THAT THE DISTRICT HAS.
I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO THINK ALSO WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT FACILITIES, TO THINK ABOUT NOT JUST THE DEFICIT THAT WE RUN EVERY YEAR, BUT MAYBE THE DEFICIT OR DEBT THAT WE'VE RUN UP WITH OUR FACILITIES IN TERMS OF DEFERRED MAINTENANCE.
WHEN I THINK ABOUT THE FACILITIES FOR FACILITIES CONTRACT THAT WE WERE ABLE TO WORK OUT AS A DISTRICT, THAT WAS GREAT, BUT IT UNDERSCORES THAT WE NEEDED TO DO THAT TO, AT THAT TIME, TAKE CARE OF FACILITY DEMANDS THAT HAD BEEN UNDERTAKEN THAT WERE DESPERATELY NEEDED.
I BELIEVE WITHIN A YEAR OR TWO,
[02:05:02]
MOST OF THAT MONEY WAS ALREADY SPOKEN FOR BECAUSE IT WAS DEDICATED TO PROJECTS THAT NEEDED TO BE MAINTAINED THAT WERE OF A A CRITICAL NATURE.I THINK THAT THERE'S GOING TO BE PLENTY OF DEMANDS ON ANY ADDITIONAL REVENUES THAT WE SEE.
I WOULD ECHO THOSE COMMENTS MADE.
THEN THE FINAL THING IS GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE HIGH SCHOOLERS AS THEY COME UP ON THEIR EXAM WEEK. THANK YOU.
>> FIRST, I CONGRATULATE OUR UNDEFEATED HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM.
[INAUDIBLE] YES, THEY'RE UNDEFEATED, AND I'M DETERMINED TO GO TO THE NEXT COMPETITION.
>> YES YOU AND ME WERE BAD LUCK [LAUGHTER].
THE GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM RAN INTO A BIT OF A BUZZ SAW WITH LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL.
THEY WERE AN ELITE TEAM, BUT OUR GIRLS PLAYED HARD, SO THEY PLAYED TOUGH.
THE CHEER SQUAD WAS THERE AND THEY STAYED FOR BOTH GAMES, THE GIRLS AND THE BOYS GAME.
MY SITE VISIT WAS WITH GARY HALL.
HE'S OUR OPS AND MAINTENANCE GUY.
THAT'S HOW I KNEW ABOUT THE COOL SPACE OVER AT THE VILLAGE ELEMENTARY.
I GOT A TOUR OF THAT AND GARY IS A VERY DETAILED GUY, HE'S FANTASTIC.
HE ALSO COMMUTES 100 MILES EACH WAY TO WORK FROM RANCHO CUCAMONGA.
THREE, 10-TON AIR CONDITIONERS, ONE, FIVE-TON AIR CONDITIONER, FOUR AIR HANDLERS.
THEY HAD TO TAKE THE ENTIRE CEILING DOWN IN THE MULTIPURPOSE ROOM AT VILLAGE ELEMENTARY TO GET ALL THAT STUFF UP THERE, AND ACTUALLY, THEY HAD TO REMOVE THE OLD STUFF, PUT UP THE NEW STUFF.
IT'S ONGOING, AND I'M SORRY THAT I'VE STOLEN DONNY'S THUNDER.
SORRY. [LAUGHTER] HE ALSO EXPLAINED TO ME HOW THE CUSTODIAL STAFF WORKS. I DIDN'T REALIZE IT.
WE HAVE 16 CUSTODIANS AND MOST ARE ON THE NIGHT SHIFT.
WE HAVE DAY SHIFT, AND THEN WE HAVE THE NIGHT SHIFT ALSO.
THEN HE SPENDS A LOT OF TIME I ASKED HIM ABOUT THIS.
HE DIDN'T BRING IT UP BUT VANDALISM.
OUR KIDS COMMITTING VANDALISM AT OUR SCHOOLS, RIPPING COMMODES OFF, DOING ALL CRAZY STUFF.
A LOT OF TIME, MONEY ENERGY IS SPENT REPAIRING VANDALISM, WHICH I'M SURE DEPUTY SALAMANCA IS WELL AWARE OF AND THE COST OF THAT.
LASTLY, ON A HIGH NOTE THOUGH, I WENT TO THE COSA PERFORMANCE REVEAL IN DECEMBER, AND IT WAS ABSOLUTELY OFF THE CHARTS PHENOMENAL.
I THINK THEY'VE GOT ANOTHER PERFORMANCE COMING UP SOON.
>> PETER AND THE STAR GUESSER. I'M SURE IT WILL BE AMAZING.
>> STAR CATCHER. I'M SURE IT'LL BE AMAZING IF YOU GET THE CHANCE. THAT'S IT. THANK YOU.
>> MINE WILL BE QUICK BECAUSE I DEFINITELY TOOK MY WINTER BREAK OFF.
BACK INTO THE SWING, WE HAD A MILITARY FAMILIES COMMITTEE MEETING.
ON MONDAY, WE GOT SURVEY RESULTS BACK AND DECIDED TO LOOK INTO THOSE AND CAME UP WITH SOME IDEAS AND SOME AREAS THAT WE'RE GOING TO FOCUS ON OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, SEE WHAT WE CAN DO FOR MILITARY FAMILIES.
I WOULD LIKE TO PUT OUT THAT IF SOMEBODY DID NOT GET TO FILL OUT THE SURVEY AND THEY HAVE INFORMATION THAT THEY WANT TO SUBMIT, I'M GOING TO WORK WITH STAFF TO PUT THE MILITARY FAMILIES COMMITTEE ON THE WEBSITE AND THEN JUST MY EMAIL TO SUBMIT ANY INFORMATION DIRECTLY TO ME AND I CAN GET IT TO THE COMMITTEE, AND WE CAN CONTINUE TO LOOK AT WAYS THAT WE CAN HELP OUR MILITARY FAMILIES AS WE JUST SAW 75% AT VILLAGE, 40% OVERALL.
LOOKING AT THAT, AND WE'RE TRYING TO MEET ABOUT MONTHLY RIGHT NOW.
AT THE END OF DECEMBER, I DID JUDGE THE GINGERBREAD COMPETITION IN MISS HARTCHY'S CLASS. LOVE THAT.
THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR THAT SHE'S DONE THAT AND THE KIDS DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB WITH GINGERBREAD AND ICING AND OTHER THINGS, MAKING THE HARRY POTTER HOUSE BLINKING ON RON'S FAMILY'S HOUSE, AND THERE WAS A TREE HOUSE AND JUST SO MANY DIFFERENT BUILDINGS.
THEY WERE SO CREATIVE. THAT WAS GREAT TO SEE.
I JUST WANT TO OFFER OUT TO THE TEACHERS AGAIN.
I WASN'T AS GOOD WITH GOING INTO CLASSROOMS LAST SEMESTER.
MISS CUMMINS, I OWE YOU, AND I'M REALLY SAD I DIDN'T GO FOR GINGERBREAD PLATO BECAUSE THAT STUFF DOES SMELL AMAZING.
BUT I WILL REACH OUT TO YOU. IF ANYBODY WOULD LIKE ME TO READ TO THE CLASSROOM OR INVITE ME OUT, I'D BE HAPPY TO GO INTO CLASSROOMS AND JUST SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING.
THAT IS ALL I HAVE. SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
[10.3 Superintendent's Comments]
I WILL ATTEMPT TO KEEP THIS BRIEF.
ALSO ABLE TO ATTEND THE COSA DANCE PRODUCTION THAT WAS AMAZING AND TO UNDERSTAND THAT A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS CHOREOGRAPHED THEIR OWN PIECES. THAT WAS GREAT.
[02:10:03]
ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OVER THE PAST MONTH FOR ME, I WAS INVITED TO BE A JUDGE FOR THE CREATIVE WRITING CLUB AT CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL.THE PANEL OF JUDGES INCLUDED TEACHERS, STAFF, AND STUDENTS.
ALL OF THEM WERE GREAT, VERY DIFFICULT TO RANK.
THANK YOU TO MR. CHAO FOR COORDINATING THAT OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS WHO JUST HAVE A PASSION FOR CREATIVE WRITING.
I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE A COMMENT MADE BY TRUSTEE CAVANAUGH AROUND THE HEAT RELEASE ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION, AND STATE, WE DON'T FEEL THAT THAT'S A ONE AND DONE.
WE HAVE ONGOING EFFORTS TO ADDRESS CLASSROOM AND OUR LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, TEMPERATURES, BUT WE FEEL THAT THAT'S A SIGNIFICANT STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
WAS ABLE TO ATTEND A FEW TWO CHS BASKETBALL GAMES.
I WATCHED OUR WOMEN COMPETE AGAINST LINCOLN AND OUR MEN COMPETE AGAINST POINT LOMA, WAS ALSO ABLE TO SNEAK OUT AND WATCH OUR WOMEN'S VARSITY SOCCER DEFEAT POINT LOMA.
THAT WAS A BRIGHT SPOT ON LAST FRIDAY NIGHT.
I WANTED TO EXPLAIN DURING THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT, I USED INTERCHANGEABLY THE TERM COMMUNITY FUNDED, BASIC AID.
THE OFFICIAL TERM FOR DISTRICTS THAT FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY IS COMMUNITY FUNDED, AND THAT JUST REALLY REFLECTS ALL OF OUR FUNDING WILL BE CHANNELED TO CUSD DIRECTLY FROM PROPERTY TAXES.
IF YOU HEAR COMMUNITY FUNDED, IF YOU HEAR BASIC AID, MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY, THOSE TWO THINGS ARE THE SAME, AND THEY REALLY JUST ILLUSTRATE THE SHIFT IN FUNDING MODEL THAT WE ARE ABOUT TO EXPERIENCE.
I WANTED TO THANK THE GOVERNING BOARD FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION YESTERDAY TO HAVE TWO BOARD MEETINGS IN 36 HOURS AS A DEMONSTRATION OF YOUR COMMITMENT, BUT THE HOURS OF TIME TO PREPARE FOR BOTH MEETINGS AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT, I THOUGHT THE DISCUSSIONS WERE AUTHENTIC AND IN THAT VENUE IN A WORKSHOP MODEL, WE WERE REALLY ABLE TO LOOK CRITICALLY AT SOME OF OUR EXISTING PROTOCOLS, AND YOUR COMMITMENT TO ADHERE TO THOSE PROTOCOLS REALLY HELPS THIS MEETING RUN NOT ONLY EFFECTIVELY, BUT ALSO UNDERSTAND HOW WE CAN HELP EDUCATE OUR COMMUNITIES.
THANK YOU, TRUSTEE LEE, FOR SHARING THE COMMENTS ABOUT PUBLIC COMMENT.
I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND THE SAFE HARBOR MEETING.
I MET THE NEW POLICE CHIEF, AND THE DISCUSSION REALLY WAS AROUND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS, AND WE WERE USING THE LA FIRES, AND OUR HEARTS GO OUT TO OUR NEIGHBORS UP 5 NORTH, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE, WE ARE HOUSING SOME DISPLACED FAMILIES AND THEIR STUDENTS ARE ATTENDING OUR SCHOOLS WHO HAVE FOUND SPACES TO RENT HERE IN CORONADO.
I ALSO KNOW SOME STAFF MEMBERS ARE HOUSING SOME STUDENTS FROM UCLA WHO HAVE TO ATTEND THEIR COURSES VIRTUALLY, BUT ARE UNABLE TO DO SO IN THEIR RESIDENTS IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA.
REALLY JUST WANTED TO EXPRESS GRATITUDE FOR OUR TEACHERS WHO ARE WELCOMING NEW STUDENTS AND FOR THOSE STAFF MEMBERS WHO ARE OPENING UP THEIR HOMES TO SUPPORT THOSE DISPLACED.
THE LAST TWO THINGS THAT I WANTED TO SHARE AND I WASN'T GOING TO UNTIL PALACIOS-PETERS TALKED ABOUT WINTER BREAK.
I WANT TO COME FULL CIRCLE ON CHRIS MCCLUNG.
I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND CHRISTINE MCCLUNG'S MEMORIAL SERVICE IN OUR THEATER.
A WONDERFUL CELEBRATION OF HER LIFE, BUT REALLY JUST HIT HOME THE ENORMOUS IMPACT AND INFLUENCE SHE HAD OVER ARTS IN CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, QUITE A LEGACY TO LEAD.
ALSO THAT SAME MORNING WAS ARTISANS ALLEY.
THANK YOU TO THE CORONADO BAND AND CHOIR BOOSTERS AND ALL OF OUR PERFORMING ART STUDENTS WERE ON DISPLAY.
HEARD FROM THE CHOIR, HEARD FROM OUR MUSICIANS, BRINGING IT FULL CIRCLE TO OUR PUBLIC COMMENT THIS EVENING.
IT'S GREAT TO SEE FROM OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS TO OUR OLDEST LEARNERS OPPORTUNITIES TO PERFORM.
THE LAST PIECE THAT I'D LIKE TO TOUCH ON IS GRATITUDE TO A GROUP OF EDUCATORS WHO ARE GIVING THEIR TIME TO CUSD IN ORDER TO TAKE A LOOK AT MORALE AND CULTURE.
WE HAVE ONE OF THOSE TEACHERS HERE IN OUR BOARD ROOM WITH US.
BUT REALLY, WE'VE HAD TWO SESSIONS AND IT'S A SAMPLING OF TEACHERS FROM ALL FOUR OF OUR SCHOOL SITES.
THE CONVERSATIONS ARE RAW AND THEY'RE OPEN AND THEY'RE HONEST.
BUT EVERYONE THERE HAS A WILLINGNESS TO TAKE A CRITICAL LOOK AT HOW DO WE STRENGTHEN THE CONCEPT OF FAMILY HERE WITHIN CUSD.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND YOUR COMMITMENT TO MAKING THAT BETTER.
[02:15:05]
THAT WILL CONCLUDE MY COMMENTS BECAUSE I HAVE MORE NOTES, BUT I'M NOT GOING TO KEEP RAMBLING ON.>> THANK YOU, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER.
ITEM 11.1, PROPOSED LIST OF AGENDA ITEMS FOR FUTURE BOARD MEETINGS.
[11.1 Proposed List of Agenda Items for Future Board Meetings]
IS THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEM 11.1 AT THIS TIME? TRUSTEES? THE ONLY ONE I HAD, I BELIEVE WE DISCUSSED IT MAYBE YESTERDAY AT OUR MEETING WAS COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS AND UPDATES.I JUST WANTED TO OFFICIALLY PUT IT ON THE RADAR.
I BELIEVE WE TALKED ABOUT DOING IT AT ANOTHER BOARD WORKSHOP STYLE.
DID WE PICK A MONTH FOR THAT, I THINK, SUPERINTENDENT MUELLER?
>> WE DID NOT DESIGNATE A MONTH, BUT [NOISE] IN PUTTING TOGETHER THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT, THERE WILL BE A FEW OPPORTUNITIES TO HOST ANOTHER WORKSHOP OF TRUSTEES, SPECIFICALLY TO TAKE A LOOK AT OUR PHILOSOPHY REGARDING INTER DISTRICT TRANSFER PLACEMENTS, MOVING INTO THE NEXT TWO YEARS AT CUSD.
WE CAN CERTAINLY ADD THAT AS A SECOND AGENDA ITEM FOR A BOARD WORKSHOP DATE TO BE DETERMINED.
>> I JUST WANTED TO REMIND TRUSTEES, THERE ARE TWO OUTSTANDING.
WE HAVEN'T CALENDARED THESE TWO AGENDA ITEMS YET, AND WE'RE STILL WORKING WITH STAFF ON [NOISE] WHERE THESE TWO WILL FALL, BUT JUST FOR COMMUNITY WHO ARE FOLLOWING, WE DID MAKE A COMMITMENT TO HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT OUR DISTRICT HOMEWORK POLICY.
WE HAVE HAD A FEW QUESTIONS FROM TRUSTEES ABOUT TK-12TH GRADE MATH CURRICULUM.
A MATH REPORT FROM THE LEARNING DEPARTMENT AND A LOOK AT OUR HOMEWORK POLICY WILL OCCUR IN THE SPRING.
WE JUST HAVEN'T PUT THEM ON OUR FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS YET BECAUSE WE'RE WORKING WITH STAFF AS TO WHEN THOSE WOULD MOST APPROPRIATELY FALL.
>> ANYTHING ELSE? OUR NEXT REGULAR BOARD MEETING WILL BE ON THURSDAY,
[11.2 Upcoming Meetings]
FEBRUARY 20TH, 2025 AT 4:00 P.M. IN THIS ROOM.WITH THAT, WE'VE REACHED THE END OF OUR AGENDA, AND WE ARE NOW ADJOURNED.
[NOISE]
