NOW AT THIS PREVIEW NIGHT, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A COUPLE OF INTERVIEWS, PRESENTATIONS, AND PERFORMANCES, ALL BACK-TO-BACK.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PERFORMANCE THAT IS FOLLOWED UP BY AN INTERVIEW OF AN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC STUDENT.

THAT INTERVIEW IS GOING TO BE HOSTED BY A JIMMY FALLON-ESQUE STUDENT HELD BY YOURS TRULY.

[LAUGHTER] WE'RE JUST GOING TO BE ASKING THE STUDENTS A LOT ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES IN COSA, THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH THE ARTS, HOW MUCH THEY LOVE THEIR TEACHERS.

IT'S JUST GOING TO BE A REALLY GOOD TIME TO SHOW OFF HOW AMAZING SOME OF OUR ARTISTS ARE.

WE WANT TO TRY TO REACH A REALLY LARGE AUDIENCE WITH THIS.

WE'RE GOING TO TRY TO ADVERTISE AND PUBLICIZE THIS AS MUCH AS WE CAN TO REACH NOT JUST IN THE ISLAND BUT OUTSIDE THE ISLAND AS WELL.

COSA COUNCIL HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT THAT A LOT.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A DANCE PERFORMANCE, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A MUSICAL THEATER AND DRAMA PERFORMANCE.

AGAIN, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE SOME STUDENT INTERVIEWS, AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN INTERVIEW WITH MS. MELLINA AS WELL AT SOME POINT DURING THAT.

WE'RE ALSO GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE COSA FOUNDATION AS WELL, SEEING IF THERE ARE ANY PROSPECTIVE PARENTS OUT THERE JUST TO LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A COSA PARENT IN ORDER TO SERVE ON THE FOUNDATION BOARD.

WE'RE JUST REALLY TRYING TO HIGHLIGHT THESE AMAZING STUDENTS.

BUT I DO JUST WANT TO SAY, THIS IS A TRANSITION YEAR FOR COSA, OBVIOUSLY AFTER MR. SCHMEICHEL WAS HERE, RUNNING COSA FOR MANY YEARS.

WE ARE IN A TRANSITION TIME.

I HAVE VERY HAPPILY TAKEN OVER THIS ROLE ALONG WITH MR. KUSSEROW, WHO IS RUNNING THE DIRECTOR POSITION FOR THE FOUNDATION SIDE OF COSA.

WE DECIDED WITH COSA COUNCIL AND WITH THE COSA TEACHERS TO REBRAND THIS EVENT TO MAKE IT MORE OF AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A FREE SHOWCASE OF WHAT COSA ACTUALLY IS SO THAT THE COMMUNITY CAN COME, PEOPLE OVER THE BRIDGE CAN COME TO ACTUALLY SEE AND HIGHLIGHT THE ARTS.

WE'RE EXCITED. WE CHANGED IT FROM A PREVIEW NIGHT TO A SHOWCASE NIGHT.

IT'S JUST GOING TO BE, AGAIN, LIKE HAYSOM SAID, LIKE A TONIGHT SHOW VIBE WITH YOURS TRULY AS THE HOST, WHICH WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT.

IT WILL GIVE FAMILIES, COMMUNITY MEMBERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO COME AND SEE WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND SPREAD THE WORD TO OTHER PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF CORONADO.

I'VE SENT THIS OFF TO CITY COUNCIL, TO PEOPLE AROUND THE COMMUNITY TO INVITE THEM TO COME.

AS HAYSOM SAID, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A STUDENT AT CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL TO BE INVOLVED TO MAKE A DONATION OR TO GET INVOLVED IN THE COSA FOUNDATION.

WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR INTERESTED PEOPLE TO JOIN THE COSA FOUNDATION BOARD.

WE WANT PEOPLE OF EXPERIENCE.

A LOT OF TIMES PARENTS DO IT OUT OF THE GOODNESS OF THEIR HEART, BUT THEY DON'T REALLY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY'RE DOING SERVING ON THE BOARD, SO WE WOULD LOVE PEOPLE THAT HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE AND WHO ARE INTERESTED IN DOING THAT.

WE KNOW THAT OUR PRESIDENT BOARD MEMBER HERE IS ON THE BOARD AS WELL, AND WE'RE GRATEFUL FOR THAT, BUT WE'RE LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERSHIP, SOME NEW ENERGY IN THAT SPACE.

WE'RE EXCITED TO HAVE THIS SHOWCASE ON DECEMBER 9TH, SO PLEASE COME AND SEE WHAT THESE STUDENTS IN COSA HAVE BEEN UP TO.

AS PROFESSIONAL EDUCATORS, THE MEMBERS OF ACT ARE DEEPLY COMMITTED TO THE SUCCESS OF EVERY STUDENT.

STUDENTS ARE THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING WE DO AND WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT HAS A CARING, QUALIFIED, COMMITTED EDUCATOR.

ALTHOUGH THE WE'RE TEACHERS IN OUR NAME, WE ARE ALSO SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS, SOMETIMES CALLED SLPS, SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS, COUNSELORS, AND NURSES.

THE PURPOSE OF THESE PRESENTATIONS EACH MONTH IS TO HELP EVERYONE GET TO KNOW OUR MEMBERS A BIT BETTER.

PERHAPS SOMETHING THAT YOU LEARN WILL HELP TO BE A CONVERSATION STARTER AS YOU VISIT YOUR WORKPLACES BECAUSE WE REALLY WANT EVERYBODY ON THE DAIS TO VISIT OUR WORK SPACES.

THIS MONTH, I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT TK.

TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN HAS UNDERGONE SOME CHANGES THIS YEAR.

MOST NOTICEABLE, THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THREE AND FOUR-YEAR-OLDS TO JOIN THE CLASS.

OUR MEMBERS HAVE MADE CHANGES IN THEIR CLASSROOMS TO ACCOMMODATE THESE YOUNGER LEARNERS.

I ASKED OUR TK MEMBERS THIS QUESTION THAT'S ON THE SCREEN.

HOW HAVE TK CLASSROOMS CHANGED THIS SCHOOL YEAR FOR OUR YOUNGER STUDENTS? I DON'T HAVE THE LIST OF WHO IT IS OKAY TO PHOTOGRAPH.

THAT'S WHY YOU'RE GOING TO SEE A LOT OF HAPPY FACES TONIGHT.

THEY LET ME KNOW THAT IN TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN, STUDENTS ARE PRESENTED WITH PURPOSEFUL PLAY OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY.

TEACHERS HAVE CAREFULLY AND SPECIFICALLY USED PURPOSEFUL PLAY AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT SKILLS SUCH AS FINE MOTOR PRACTICE, COUNTING AND SORTING, EXPERIMENTING WITH COLORS AND SHAPES, AND MULTISENSORY OPPORTUNITIES.

STUDENTS CAN OFTEN BE SEEN USING PLATO, SOME OF WHICH I'VE LEARNED IS HOMEMADE BY THE TEACHERS THEMSELVES, KINETIC SAND, STICKERS, TWEEZERS, POM-POMS, MAGNETIC TILES, AND WHITEBOARD MARKERS, AGAIN, GETTING THAT DEXTERITY GOING.

PURPOSEFUL PLAY OFFERS STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO REPEAT SKILLS OF THEIR PREFERENCE FOR AN EXTENDED TIME TO GAIN THOSE LIFELONG SKILLS AS LEARNERS PREPARING FOR KINDERGARTEN AND ELEMENTARY GRADES AHEAD.

THIS YEAR, TK CLASSES ARE CAPPED AT 24 STUDENTS AND MUST HAVE THREE ADULTS IN THEM IF THERE ARE MORE THAN 20 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE CLASS.

PLEASE KNOW THE STUDENT TO TEACHER RATIO IS NOT BASED UPON WHO IS PRESENT IN THE CLASS THAT DAY, BUT WHO IS ENROLLED IN THE CLASS.

IF A STUDENT REQUIRES A ONE ON ONE AID, THAT ADULT IS NOT PART OF THE RATIO.

THOSE RATIOS MUST BE MAINTAINED DURING ANY MINUTE THAT IS COUNTED AS PART OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL DAY.

WITH THE DECREASE IN STUDENT-TEACHER RATIOS, STUDENTS IN TK HAVE A GREATER OPPORTUNITY TO WORK IN SMALL GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

STUDENTS CAN OFTEN BE SEEN DOING ART PROJECTS, FINE MOTOR WORK, AND FACILITATED PLAY.

STUDENTS IN TK WORKING IN SMALL GROUPS ARE ABLE TO PRACTICE SKILLS SUCH AS PROBLEM-SOLVING, COMMUNICATION, AND SOMETHING THAT'S HARD FOR US ADULTS STILL: TURN-TAKING.

SMALL GROUPS OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY FOR TEACHERS AND ASSISTANTS TO OFFER IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK AND GUIDANCE WHILE INCREASING STUDENT PARTICIPATION AND COMFORT.

WHEN ASKED WHAT THEIR FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING TK WAS, MRS. BEVILACQUA SAYS TK IS A YEAR OF GROWTH.

SHE LOVES WATCHING STUDENTS GAIN CONFIDENCE, NOT ONLY WITH ACADEMICS, BUT ALSO WITH SOCIAL INTERACTIONS, PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS, AND A LOVE FOR LEARNING THAT WILL FOLLOW THEM TO KINDERGARTEN.

THEIR LITTLE SMILES MAKE A WHOLE DAY.

MS DOHERTY SAYS, TEACHING TK IS A TRULY MAGICAL EXPERIENCE.

SHE LOVES SPENDING THE DAY WITH THIS AGE GROUP.

THEIR ENTHUSIASM FOR LEARNING AND THEIR ENJOYMENT OF SCHOOL AND CLASSMATES IS INFECTIOUS.

SHE READS STORIES, PLAYS GAMES, SINGS SONGS, AND THEY LEARN TO TREAT EVERYONE WITH LOVE AND KINDNESS.

EVERY DAY IS AN EXCITING DAY IN TK.

MISS RICHARDSON SAYS SHE LOVES THAT TK IS SUCH A FOUNDATION FOR A CHILD'S JOURNEY.

HELPING STUDENTS DEVELOP EARLY LITERACY, NUMBER SENSE, AND SOCIAL SKILLS WHILE FOSTERING A LOVE OF LEARNING IS INCREDIBLY REWARDING.

MS. MORTALO SAYS, IT'S FUN.

THE KIDS ARE EXCITED TO SOCIALIZE AND LOVE TO COME TO SCHOOL.

SO MUCH LEARNING HAPPENS FROM WEEK TO WEEK.

STUDENTS AND TK ARE WORKING ON COUNTING 230.

AT THE END OF OCTOBER, WE'RE ALREADY TO FIVE.

WE'RE GETTING THERE, WRITING THEIR NAMES INDEPENDENTLY, LETTER NAMES AND SOUNDS, FINE MOTOR SKILLS, AND USING TOOLS TO INCREASE PRECISION.

IF YOU'VE EVER TRIED TO PICK UP A COTTON BALL WITH A SET OF TWEEZERS, IT IS A CHALLENGE. GOOD FOR THEM.

OUR CONCERNS ARE THAT THE STATE FUNDING FOR TK WILL END AS OF RIGHT NOW, WHEN WE BECOME A BASIC AID DISTRICT.

WE HOPE THAT DURING BASIC AID PLANNING SESSIONS, YOU KEEP IN MIND JUST HOW IMPORTANT AND MEANINGFUL TK IS TO THE STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND TEACHERS INVOLVED AND DO EVERYTHING WITHIN YOUR POWER TO CONTINUE OFFERING TK IN THE CORN OUT OF UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND ON MY END, AT THE STATE LEVEL, THE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION COMMITTEE I BELIEVE YOU ME, OUR LEGISLATIVE LIAISON KEEPS HEARING FROM ME, ANY NEWS, HOW ARE WE DOING BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE TK OFFERED TO OUR KIDS, AND ALONG WITH THAT PUSH, I'M ALSO PUSHING FOR WHAT CAN WE DO, EVEN THOUGH OUR FUNDING IS CHANGING? IS THERE ANYTHING THAT THE STATE CAN DO TO ENTICE BASIC A DISTRICTS TO STILL OFFER TK AS THEY ARE ENTICING DISTRICTS RIGHT NOW WITH AN EXTRA OR TOTAL, I FORGET WHICH MR. SALAMANCA WOULD KNOW.

SORRY, A 3,500 PER TK KID WE GET, WHICH IS WAY ABOVE AND BEYOND THE ADA THAT WE GET FOR OUR REGULAR KIDDOS.

AT VILLAGE, WE STRIVE TO CREATE STUDENT OWNERSHIP OF THEIR LEARNING AND INTRINSIC MOTIVATION FOR THEIR GROWTH.

I HAVE A SON WHO'S NOW IN TK AND IT'S BEEN REALLY TRANSFORMATIONAL FORUM, AND I CAN'T EMPHASIZE HOW IMPORTANT THAT PROGRAM IS FOR SOME OF OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS, ACCLIMATING THEM TO THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT, AND WHEN THEY HAVE A TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN YEAR, THEY ARE VERY SUCCESSFUL IN KINDERGARTEN.

I JUST WANT TO PUT A PLUG THERE. KINDERGARTEN AS WELL, WE ACTUALLY SAW A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN OUR NUMBER OF KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS.

FOR OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS, WE HAD TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FLEXIBILITY IN HOW WE BEST SUPPORT THEM ON A CLASSROOM AND TEACHER BASIS BUT JUST WORTHY OF NOTING HOW THIS COHORT CONTINUES TO MOVE OVER THE COURSE OF THEIR TIME HERE.

OUR TOTAL ENROLLMENT ALSO DECLINED PRETTY SIGNIFICANTLY FROM 822 TO 759.

FOR STUDENT AND STAFF STATISTICS AS WELL, OBVIOUSLY, THE DECLINE IN ENROLLMENT WILL ALSO RESULT IN A DECLINE IN CERTIFICATED STAFF JUST IN ORDER TO HAVE THOSE CLASSROOM.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE MAINTAIN THOSE RATIOS FOR OUR TEACHERS.

THEN ALSO FOR CLASSIFIED STAFF AS WELL, IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION OF, HEY, IF WE HAVE LESS STUDENTS, WE HAVE AN INCREASE IN CLASSIFIED STAFF, A LOT OF THAT IS BECAUSE OF OUR TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN THAT RATIO MOVING FROM ONE AID TO TWO AIDS IN THE CLASSROOM.

BUT I DO WANT TO REINFORCE THAT EVERY STAFF MEMBER AT VILLAGE ELEMENTARY PLAYS A REALLY CRITICAL ROLE IN THE SUCCESS OF OUR SCHOOL DAY AND SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND WHEN THOSE STAFF MEMBERS ARE REARRANGED OR MOVED AROUND, WE DO START TO SEE SOME GAPS IN SUPERVISION AND SUPPORT.

IT'S MY JOB NOT ONLY TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS ARE SAFE AND SUPPORTED IN SCHOOL, BUT THEN ALSO TO ADVOCATE AS WELL.

IF WE DO NEED STAFF TO HELP PLUG SOME OF THOSE HOLES, I'LL BE REACHING OUT FOR THAT AS WELL BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT'S DIFFICULT AS AN ADMINISTRATOR WHEN YOU'RE COMING IN TO FILL A HOLE THAT YOU CAN'T FILL EVERY DAY.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS HAVE THAT LEVEL OF SUPPORT THAT THEY NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY MOVE THROUGHOUT THE DAY SUCCESSFULLY.

ALSO, JUST LAST DATA POINT FOR FREE AND REDUCED MEAL PROGRAMS, DID HAVE A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN OUR STUDENTS QUALIFYING FOR THAT.

STARTING OFF WITH SOME STRENGTHS.

IN TERMS OF OUR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATHEMATICS, WE CONTINUE TO BE STRONG IN BOTH ELA AND MATH.

SOME EFFECTIVE PRACTICES THAT I'VE SEEN OVER THE COURSE OF NOT ONLY THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR, BUT SINCE WE'VE BEEN HERE, IS EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATIONS OF OUR CURRICULUM, INCLUDING THE FOS SCIENCE CURRICULUM THAT WAS OUR YEAR 1 LAST YEAR.

THE USE OF DIAGNOSTIC AND BENCHMARK ASSESSMENTS SUCH AS DUPLES AND STAR TO INFORM AND DRIVE INSTRUCTION, AND THEN ADJUSTMENTS TO READING AND MATH INTERVENTION, AS WELL.

MATH INTERVENTION IS NOW A PUSH IN SERVICE.

IN ADDITION TO READING INTERVENTION, WE REALLY ARE TRYING TO BE FLEXIBLE TO HAVE MORE KIDS QUALIFY INTO READING INTERVENTION AND WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.

HAVING READING INTERVENTION REALLY IS A SERVICE OF NOT FOR KIDS TO BE THERE IN PERPETUITY, BUT TO EITHER MOVE UP THE LEVELS OF SUPPORT OR IDEALLY MOVE BACK DOWN TO WHERE THE CLASSROOM TEACHER CAN SUPPORT THOSE STUDENTS.

TEACHERS ARE REALLY INVESTED IN THIS CURRICULUM.

I THINK THAT WILL DRIVE SOME MORE ARTICULATED AND STRONG PHONICS INSTRUCTION AS WE CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD.

THE STUDENT CLASSROOM GOAL SETTING.

THROUGH LEADER IN ME, THAT'S A WIG PROCESS.

I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE WORKING ON NOW IS FOR STUDENTS THEMSELVES TO REALLY TAKE A LOOK AT THEIR OWN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND START TO ENGAGE IN THE GOAL SETTING PROCESS AND THE WORK THAT IT TAKES TO ACHIEVE THOSE GOALS.

THEN ALSO INSTRUCTIONAL USE OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSESSMENT BLOCKS FOR INSTRUCTIONAL ALIGNMENT WITH CAST.

IN TERMS OF GRADES THAT ARE TESTED, MAKING SURE THAT THE RIGOR THAT WE'RE DELIVERING IN THE CLASSROOM AND THE CURRICULUMS THAT WE'RE USING ARE ALIGNED TO HOW THE STUDENTS ARE ASSESSED.

IF THERE ARE SOME GAPS THERE, IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US TO BE ABLE TO BE MINDFUL OF THOSE AND HOW DO WE CLOSE THAT? SOME GROWTH AREAS.

IN TERMS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER PROGRESS, OUR GOAL IS ALWAYS FOR 100% OF STUDENTS TO BE MAKING AT LEAST ONE ELPI LEVEL OF PROGRESS EVERY YEAR.

RIGHT NOW, WE'RE ABOUT AT 73%.

THERE'S A QUARTER OF THE STUDENTS WHO AREN'T MAKING THAT YEARLY PROGRESS THAT WE WANT THEM TO MAKE.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING ABOUT IS WE HAVE AN ELD INSTRUCTIONAL AID THAT ASSIST THE TEACHER BY PULLING THOSE STUDENTS EVERY DAY INTO A SMALL GROUP TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE GETTING THAT TARGETED INSTRUCTION.

IT'S NOT JUST ANOTHER CURRICULUM THAT THE TEACHER HAS TO TEACH AND THAT ROLE IS VERY CRITICAL.

IN TERMS OF MONTHLY ATTENDANCE, CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM, WHAT WE LEARNED LAST YEAR WAS COMMUNICATION TO THE COMMUNITY ABOUT ATTENDANCE REALLY DID HELP DRIVE OUR ADA TO BE ABOVE THE 95% THRESHOLD, BUT DIDN'T REALLY MAKE A DENT IN CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM UNTIL LATER IN THE YEAR WHEN WE REALLY STARTED TO TARGET, WHO ARE THE STUDENTS THAT ARE CHRONICALLY ABSENT? HOW DO WE INFORM THOSE PARENTS OF THE DAMAGES OF CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM AND HOW DO WE KEEP REMINDING THEM TO GET TO SCHOOL CONSISTENTLY? WE TRACK THIS DATA EVERY MONTH.

CURRENTLY, WE'RE AT 6%, SO WE DID SEE PRETTY SIGNIFICANT DIP THERE AND WE REALLY HOPE THAT CONTINUES BECAUSE OUR GOAL IS AROUND 5% THERE.

THEN ALSO OUR SUSPENSION RATE CONTINUES TO BE HIGH AND ALL OF THE BEHAVIORS THAT HAVE RESULTED IN SUSPENSION WERE WARRANTED AND AT THE SAME TIME, WE UNDERSTAND THAT IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, IF THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE TO A SUSPENSION THAT IS MORE THERAPEUTIC, WE'LL ALWAYS REMOVE THEM FROM THE CLASSROOM AND WE BELIEVE IN STUDENT ACCOUNTABILITY.

BUT WHAT CAN WE DO TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE MEETING THE NEEDS OF THESE STUDENTS BECAUSE ONE OF THE REASONS WHY THIS IS A GROWTH AREA IS THE STUDENTS THAT ARE GETTING SUSPENDED MORE OFTEN THAN NOT HAVE A DISABILITY AND SO IS THIS A MANIFESTATION OF THE DISABILITY? WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP PROVIDE THOSE SUPPORTS TO WHERE THEY'RE NOT CAUSING A DISRUPTION OR A SAFETY CONCERN IN THE CLASSROOM, BUT WE'RE ALSO NOT JUST SENDING THEM TO THEIR PARENTS EVERY DAY BECAUSE WE NOTICED THAT THAT INTERVENTION, IF DONE CONSISTENTLY OVER TIME, REALLY DOESN'T YIELD THE RESULT THAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR IN A CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR, JUST RESULTS IN MORE SUSPENSIONS.

HOW CAN WE ACTUALLY ADDRESS THE NEED BY MORE THERAPEUTIC IN HOUSE PROGRAMS? RIGHT NOW, WE'RE GOING TO CONVERT A CLASSROOM SPACE INTO THAT TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE SOME OF THOSE SUPPORTS.

PROGRESS TOWARDS SPSA GOALS.

AT VILLAGE ELEMENTARY, WE SET PRETTY HIGH ACADEMIC GOALS FOR ACHIEVEMENTS,

AND THESE GOALS ARE BASED ON THE 100% MINDSET IN THE SENSE THAT WE DON'T WANT TO CREATE A GOAL THAT WOULD LEAVE A STUDENT BEHIND.

WE LOOK AT EACH GRADE LEVEL AND AS A SCHOOL, WE HAVE THREE CATEGORIES OF STUDENTS.

WE HAVE OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, WE HAVE STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS THAT RECEIVE IEP SUPPORT, AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE BASICALLY EVERYBODY ELSE, OUR GENERAL COHORT OF STUDENTS.

OUR GOAL FOR EACH OF THOSE GROUPS IS FOR OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS THAT THEY MAKE ONE YEAR OF PROGRESS EACH YEAR, FOCUSING ON THAT LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT.

FOR OUR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS THAT ARE RECEIVING ACADEMIC SAI INSTRUCTION, THAT THEY MEET THEIR ACADEMIC SAI GOALS.

THE REASON WHY THESE TWO GROUPS OF STUDENTS MAY NOT BE ACHIEVING A GRADE LEVEL IS ONE, THEY'RE EITHER LEARNING ENGLISH OR THEY MAY HAVE A DISABILITY THAT GETS IN THE WAY OF ACHIEVING GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS, WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE.

BUT THEN FOR EVERYBODY ELSE, OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE THEM ACHIEVE ON GRADE LEVEL IN ALL SUBJECTS.

THAT'S WHERE THE GOAL NUMBERS COME FROM AS I LOOK AT EACH COHORT, AND THEN I SET THE GOAL BASED ON THAT NUMBER OF STUDENTS.

THAT WILL FLUCTUATE YEAR OVER YEAR.

THE RESULTS ARE RIGHT HERE.

I THINK AS A SCHOOL, WE'VE SET A GOAL OF LOOKING AT GRADES K-5, WE'RE AT ABOUT 68-70% OF STUDENTS PERFORMING ON GRADE LEVEL AND ELA AND MATH STANDARDS, AND WE HAVE ABOUT 20% OF OUR STUDENTS THAT ARE IDENTIFIED AS EITHER RECEIVING ACADEMIC SAI INSTRUCTION OR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS.

THERE'S ABOUT A 10-12% GAP THAT WE'RE WORKING ON CLOSING.

HOW WE'RE WORKING ON DOING THAT IS ONE, HAVING A MORE CONCERTED EFFORT IN OUR STUDENT SUCCESS TEAM PROCESS.

WE FEEL AS THOUGH OUR FAMILIES IN ADDITION TO BRINGING TO LIGHT, IF THERE ARE AREAS FOR GROWTH.

DR. YOUNG, AS A DOCTOR, YOU UNDERSTAND THAT IF DATA REVEALS THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE SIGNIFICANT INTERVENTION, IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU WAIT ON NECESSARILY.

WE'RE HAVING A MORE CONCERTED EFFORT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE INFORMING PARENTS OF, HEY, IF JOHNNY'S TWO GRADE LEVELS BEHIND, LET'S MAKE SURE WE PUT A PLAN IN PLACE TO CATCH JOHNNY UP AND MAKING SURE THAT WE ALL USE OUR STUDENT SUCCESS TEAM PROCESS TO CREATE SOME INTERVENTIONS THAT WE CAN TRACK OVER TIME TO HELP THOSE STUDENTS BRINGING THESE THINGS TO LIGHT.

IN ADDITION TO A LOT OF THIS IN TERMS OF CAST ALIGNMENT, OUR TEACHERS DO A FANTASTIC JOB OF TEACHING THE CURRICULUM AND REALLY GEARING STUDENTS TO TAKE THESE TESTS.

THESE TESTS CAN BE TRICKY IN THE SENSE THAT SOMETIMES WHAT'S BEING ASKED OF THEM ISN'T NECESSARILY AN ALIGNMENT WITH WHAT IS BEING TAUGHT 100%.

IT MAY ASK A QUESTION DIFFERENTLY, OR IT MAY ASK THEM TO THINK ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL OR ON A DIFFERENT PLANE.

WE ARE HAVING EACH GRADE LEVEL THREE THROUGH FIVE LOOK AT SOME OF THESE PRACTICE MATERIALS AND SAY, HEY, IS IT BEING TAUGHT THIS WAY, OR IS THERE A RIGOR DISCONNECT? WHAT CAN WE DO INSTRUCTIONALLY TO MAYBE HAVE A QUESTION OF THE DAY OR A QUESTION OF THE WEEK, WHERE WE GO AND SEE HEY, IF THIS IS HOW YOU'RE GOING TO BE ASSESSED, AND IF THERE IS A RIGOR MISALIGNMENT, HOW DO WE APPROACH THIS? IN TERMS OF INSTRUCTIONAL THINGS, THAT'S AN AREA THAT WE'RE LOOKING TO DO AS WELL.

IN TERMS OF OUR SCIENCE INSTRUCTION, WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS.

WE DO THINK THAT OUR CONTINUED EMPHASIS ON INVOLVEMENT IN OUR CURRICULUM NOW THAT WE'RE GOING INTO YEAR 2 AND THE TEACHERS FAMILIARITY WITH IT WILL RESULT IN IMPROVEMENTS.

GOAL 3, SUSPENSION RATE DID TALK ABOUT HOW THIS IS PROBABLY OUR BIGGEST GROWTH AREA WITH THAT DISPROPORTIONALITY WITH STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES.

THEY FOLLOW EXPECTATIONS, AND THERE REALLY ISN'T AN AREA OF CONCERN FOR THEM, BUT THERE IS THIS 5-7% THAT DO HAVE CONSISTENT ISSUES THAT WE ARE WORKING AS A SCHOOL TO ADDRESS AND HOW WE CAN SUPPORT THEM BETTER, REALLY BECAUSE HOW WE ADDRESS THAT 5-10% OF SCHOOLS REALLY CAN MAKE OR BREAK A SCHOOL, AND I THINK THAT WE CAN DO THAT A LITTLE BIT MORE EFFECTIVELY.

I REALLY WANT TO SHOUT OUT MISS BRAGA AND MISS KEHAN, WHO HAVE TAKEN ON A LOT OF THIS WORK OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE IN MOST NEED OF SUPPORT, HOW CAN WE DO THINGS TO GET BETTER OUTCOMES? THEN WE ALSO HAVE SOME LEADER IN ME GOALS AS WELL.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT BASED ON THEIR METRICS, THOSE PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR GROWTH, AND THAT IS AROUND COLLECTIVE EFFICACY AND CULTURE AND HOW WE'RE IMPLEMENTING THE LEADER IN ME PROGRAM, AND THEN ALSO OUR BEHAVIOR REFERRALS AS WELL.

THE GOAL IS OBVIOUSLY TO DECREASE THAT NUMBER OF REFERRALS, AND HOW WE'RE DOING THAT IS BY ANALYZING OUR TIER 2 SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT, NOW WE CAN BEST MEET THE NEEDS OF THAT RELATIVELY SMALL SUBGROUP OF STUDENTS.

AM I CORRECT IN THAT ASSUMPTION?

THAT WILL ABSOLUTELY BE A PART OF STAFF PRESENTATION IS TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS, PROTECT OUR STAFF, PRESERVE INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES AND INSTRUCTIONAL TIME, ENCOURAGE STUDENT CONNECTEDNESS DURING NON-INSTRUCTIONAL TIME, BUT ALSO PROTECT THE DISTRICT'S LIABILITY IN SITUATIONS WHERE CELL PHONE USE IS PERMISSIBLE DURING NON-INSTRUCTIONAL TIME.

THIS IS GOING TO BE A LARGE TASK.

I APPRECIATE PRESIDENT PALACIOS-PETERS SAYING THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN OVERNIGHT.

WHAT HE DOES IS HE TAKES AFTER THE GRADUATION, ALL THOSE PLANTS THAT ARE UP IN THE STAGE AND HE PLANTS THEM AROUND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THEY'RE WARRANTIED FOR A YEAR.

WE TALKED ABOUT THE ROLE OF PROJECT BASED LEARNING, THE IMPACT OF HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND RIGOROUS STANDARDS FOR STUDENTS AND HOW TO BECOME A PURPLE STAR DESIGNATED SCHOOL, SOMETHING THAT THEY ARE INTERESTED IN PURSUING THERE.

I KNOW TRUSTEE YOUNGBLOOD AND TRUSTEE LEE BOTH WANTED TO BE THERE AND WERE UNABLE, BUT THANKS TO THE THREE WHO WERE ABLE TO ATTEND.

I REALLY JUST WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CORONADO POLICE DEPARTMENT.

THE CHIEF OF POLICE WAS THERE, CONTRIBUTED TO THAT FORUM AND ALSO TO DANIEL MASK AT SAFE HARBOR AND TO THE PARENTS WHO SUBMITTED QUESTIONS IN ADVANCE AND REALLY FRAMED OUR PRESENTATION, AND ALSO OUR RESPONSES TO THOSE QUESTIONS.

I WAS SO PROUD OF THAT GROUP OF ATHLETES.

THIS IS A STATE MANDATE TO PROVIDE THESE SERVICES, AND YET THE ROUGHLY 10% OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA THAT RECEIVE BASIC AID FUNDING DO NOT RECEIVE ADDITIONAL OR FUNDS FOR THAT PROGRAM.

I'M VERY HOPEFUL AND AGAIN, THAT'S SOMETHING PERHAPS THAT WE CAN ADVOCATE FOR AT THE STATE LEVEL.
