SHE WAS AN AMAZING, KIND, CARING PERSON WHO REALLY HELPED MENTOR ME IN RUNNING FOR OFFICE AND IN BEING ABLE TO SIT IN A SEAT UP HERE.

BUT SHE WAS A FORCE FOR OUR DISTRICT, FOR OUR COMMUNITY, FOR YOUR FAMILY, AND IT'S A BIG HOLE FOR US, AND SHE WILL BE MISSED.

I FIRST MET HER IN PERSON WHEN RUNNING FOR OFFICE HERE FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD.

SHE WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT EDUCATION AS EVIDENCED BY A PHD IN EDUCATION.

I WOULD ALWAYS SEE HER AROUND TOWN, FOR SOME REASON, WE HAVE THE SAME SHOPPING SCHEDULE AT SMART AND FINAL AND WE SEE A RENDEZVOUS IN THE DAIRY SECTION FOR SOME REASON.

I SAW HER ALL THE TIME, AND SHE WILL BE SORELY MISSED.

SHE WAS ALWAYS GRACIOUS AND KIND AND SO PERSONABLE, AND I APPRECIATED ALL OF HER SERVICE FOR THE COMMUNITY, AND IT'S A GREAT LOSS TO LOSE HER.

>> I DIDN'T KNOW DR. ANDERSON CRUZ VERY WELL, BUT IN THE BRIEF TIME I DID SPEND WITH HER.

IT WAS IMMEDIATELY CLEAR HOW EXTRAORDINARY SHE WAS, NOT ONLY IN HER ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS, BUT YOU ALL I HAVE ALREADY TOUCHED UPON, BUT IN THE WAY SHE POURED ALL OF THAT BACK INTO CORONADO.

HER SERVICE ON THE BOARD AND HER DEDICATED WORK ON EDUCATION STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITY IN MANY WAYS PEOPLE WILL NEVER FULLY SEE, BUT ALL OF US WILL BENEFIT FROM.

DEVIN, I WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK TO YOU DIRECTLY.

YOU ARE YOUR MOTHER'S LIVING LEGACY.

THE CLEAREST EXPRESSION OF THE VALUES SHE LIVED BY AND THE IMPACT SHE HOPED TO LEAVE ON THE WORLD THROUGH EDUCATION.

SHE WAS ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT HER PROFESSION, ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT HER FAMILY, AND ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT HER COMMUNITY.

WHEN YOU RAN INTO HER ON THE STREET, SHE WAS ALWAYS SMILING AND SHE ALWAYS HAS SOME INCREDIBLY FUNNY STORY TO TELL YOU ABOUT, AND SHE HAD A WONDERFUL WAY OF TALKING TO PEOPLE.

ON THE DAYS, I WATCHED AS SHE LISTENED TO HER FELLOW TRUSTEES AND SHE REALLY STROVE FOR UNDERSTANDING AMONG EVERYONE ON THE BOARD.

HER WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY TO FOSTER DISCUSSIONS POSITIVELY IMPACTED THE DECISIONS THAT WERE MADE UP HERE.

OUR SCHOOLS IN OUR DISTRICT ARE BETTER BECAUSE OF HER CONTRIBUTIONS.

SHE WILL BE MISSED, BUT VERY FONDLY REMEMBERED.

>> I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING WITH DR. ANDERSON CRUZ AND HER ROLE AS TRUSTEE.

BUT SHE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST MEETINGS THAT I HAD 10 YEARS AGO WHEN I STARTED IN THIS ROLE.

SHE SHOWED UP AS A PROFESSOR REPRESENTING INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS AND STUDENT TEACHER PLACEMENTS AS A UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR FOR CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND WAS VERY THOUGHTFUL IN ENSURING THAT IF SHE ALLOWED HER STUDENT TEACHERS TO SERVE IN OUR DISTRICT, THAT WE WOULD PLACE THEM WITH EDUCATORS WHO WOULD MOLD THEM IN THE SHAPE THAT THEY WERE CAPABLE OF.

DURING HER TIME ON THE BOARD, I HAVE SO MANY FOND MEMORIES OF DR. HELEN.

I WOULD MEET WITH HER EVERY WEEK.

WE WOULD DISCUSS THE DISTRICT.

WE WOULD DISCUSS PUBLIC EDUCATION, WE WOULD DISCUSS LIFE.

BUT I THINK A HIGHLIGHT FOR ME WAS A TRIP TO PHILADELPHIA, TWO TRUSTEES AND MYSELF WENT TO PHILADELPHIA TO TOUR ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOLS TO LOOK AT BELL SCHEDULES AND TO STUDY THE IMPACT OF ALTERNATIVE BELL SCHEDULES AND WHAT THEY COULD MEAN FOR CUSD.

SHE WAS OBSERVANT.

SHE HAD A CRITICAL EYE.

SHE ASKED QUESTIONS THAT THE PRINCIPALS OF THE SCHOOLS WEREN'T SURE HOW TO ANSWER.

BUT DURING THAT TRIP, WE HAD A BREAK BETWEEN CONFERENCES AND IT WAS RAINING, AND WE DECIDED TO GO ON A WALK THROUGH PHILADELPHIA.

THERE WAS HELEN IN THE RAIN WALKING UP THE ROCKY STAIRS.

IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO HER THAT SHE MADE IT ALL THE WAY UP THOSE STAIRS.

SHE WAS A FIERCE ADVOCATE FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLIC EDUCATORS.

SHE ALWAYS BROUGHT THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE CLASSROOM TEACHER INTO CONVERSATIONS THAT WE HAD.

FOR THAT, I'LL BE GRATEFUL.

HELEN WAS PATIENT AND GRACEFUL, AND KIND.

I'LL ALWAYS CHERISH MY TIME WITH HER.

WE'LL ALWAYS THINK OF BUTTERFLIES AND PELICANS IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

AS REMINDERS OF THE IMPACT THAT HELEN HAD ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, BUT ON ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL.

I'D LIKE TO THANK YOUR FAMILY, DEVIN, AUDREY, TROY, I SEE YOU HERE FOR SHARING HER WITH US.

THE LOVE THAT SHE HAD FOR HER FAMILY WAS ALWAYS WORN ON HER SLEEVE.

HAVE COMFORTED ME IN WAYS THAT I DIDN'T KNOW THAT I NEEDED.

SHE WAS A FORCE AND THE VOID SHE LEFT IS HUGE, AND I FEEL IT EVERY DAY.

BUT I'M JUST SO GRATEFUL FOR EVERYONE THAT'S REACHED OUT TO US AND THAT LOVED MY MOM AND THAT HAS LOVED US THROUGH THIS.

I'M GRATEFUL FOR THIS WONDERFUL TRIBUTE FOR EVERYTHING YOU GUYS SAID.

SHE WAS A FORCE FOR SURE.

BUT SHE WAS ALSO THE MOST LOVING HUMAN BEING I'VE EVER MET BEFORE IN MY LIFE.

MORE THAN THAT, WE FELT THE SUPPORT EVERY STEP OF THE WAY BY THE CORONADO COMMUNITY.

OUR FAMILIES, FRIENDS, CLASSMATES, TEACHERS, AND SUPPORTERS WHO CAME OUT TO GAMES, CHEERED US ON AND BELIEVED IN US.

AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, THE PROPERTY LOCATED HERE ON 1996 STREET AS CURRENTLY LEASED BY THE US NAVY, IN ADDITION TO ANOTHER ENTITY, KINDER CHAMPION, WHICH IS IN A JOINT USE AGREEMENT WITH CORONADO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.

TOGETHER, BOTH OF THOSE ENTITIES CONTRIBUTE CLOSE TO $900,000 IN ANNUAL REVENUES TO SUPPORT THE DISTRICT'S INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMMING, AND ALSO OUR FACILITIES INITIATIVE, WHICH ALLOWED US TO TAKE A $12 MILLION LOAN OUT IN 2020.

WE'RE EXCITED THAT THE NAVY HAS OPTED TO JOIN US FOR ANOTHER 10-YEAR LEASE, WHICH HAPPENS TO COINCIDE WITH THE 15-YEAR TERM OF THE DEBT THAT WE TOOK OUT IN 2020.

IT'S $12 MILLION OVER 15 YEARS AND LEASE REVENUE IS SUFFICIENT TO MEET THE DEBT SERVICE PAYMENT OVER THE SAME TERM.

JUST A FEW OTHER HIGHLIGHTS THAT THE COMMITTEE SHARED.

THEY REALLY APPRECIATED THE FORETHOUGHT THAT WENT INTO THE NEGOTIATIONS OF THE NAVY LEASE, BUT ALSO THE ADDITIONAL CLASSROOMS THAT WERE SPARED FOR THE KINDERCARE CHAMPIONS PROGRAM.

THEY CURRENTLY JUST IN THE ITEM.

I SHARE THAT THERE IS A 488-CHILD WAIT LIST FOR THE NAVY PROGRAM AND A 17-STUDENT WAIT LIST FOR THE KINDERGARTEN CHAMPIONS PORTION.

MUCH-NEEDED RESOURCE FOR THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE, AND VERY FORTUNATE THAT 12 CHILDREN OF CUSD EMPLOYEES ARE BENEFITING FROM THIS PROGRAM AS WELL.

YOU'LL SEE ADDITIONAL EXPENDITURES OF ABOUT $1.4 MILLION IN CERTIFICATED SALARIES.

AS YOU KNOW, WE RECENTLY NEGOTIATED A TWO YEAR SETTLEMENT, SALARY SETTLEMENT WITH THE ASSOCIATION OF CORONADO TEACHERS, INCLUDED IN THAT 1.4 IS A 2% RETROACTIVE INCREASE TO CERTIFICATED TEACHERS HERE IN OUR DISTRICT, AND THE REMAINING PORTION OF THAT 1.4 IS A ONE TIME BONUS.

ONE OF THE OTHER ITEMS THAT WE NEGOTIATED AND SETTLED ON WAS A $750 ONE-TIME STIPEND RELATED TO STARTING THE SCHOOL YEAR EARLIER THIS YEAR.

CLASSIFIED SALARIES DECREASE OR PROJECTED TO DECREASE BY ABOUT $300,000, ONE FTE WAS RECLASSIFIED FROM A CLASSIFIED POSITION TO A CERTIFICATED POSITION,

THE CLASSIFICATIONS HAVE TO DO WITH THE INDIVIDUAL'S CREDENTIALING.

WE HAD A GRANT FUNDED POSITION FORMERLY HELD BY SOMEONE WITHOUT A TEACHING CREDENTIAL AND NOW HELD BY SOMEONE WITH A TEACHING CREDENTIAL.

WE MOVE FROM THE CLASSIFIED SALARIES UP TO CERTIFICATED.

THE OTHER REASON FOR THE DIFFERENCE IS, GIVEN OUR TIMING FOR HIRING THIS YEAR, WE ENDED UP IN A SHORTAGE FOR ONE OF OUR KEY POSITIONS.

WE WERE ABLE TO CONTRACT THAT OUT TO AN OUTSIDE CONTRACTOR.

AGAIN, IT MOVES FROM THE 2,000 OBJECT CODE CLASSIFIED SALARIES TO SERVICES AND OTHER OPERATING.

IT MOVES WITHIN THE BUDGET.

FOR EMPLOYEE BENEFITS, WE SEE INCREASE OF ABOUT $400,000 ANYTIME YOU SPEND MORE MONEY IN SALARIES.

THERE'S ALL OF THE STATUTORY BENEFITS THAT ARE RELATED TO THOSE, THAT'S THE REASON FOR THAT INCREASE.

THEN BOOKS AND SUPPLIES, SERVICES AND OTHER OPERATING.

YOU'RE SEEING SOME SHIFTS INTENTIONAL TO ENSURE OUR BRIDGE TO BASIC AID.

WE WERE ABLE TO REDUCE SOME OF OUR EXPENDITURES IN THOSE BUDGET CATEGORIES THAT ARE AWAY FROM EMPLOYEE SALARIES AND MORE THINGS THAT WE CAN DELAY SPENDING FOR A YEAR OR TWO, IF NECESSARY.

IF IT DOES NOT FILL THE BUCKET OR DOES NOT MEET THE MINIMUM LEVEL OF FUNDING THAT'S REQUIRED BY THE STATE, THE STATE BACK FILLS IT, REPRESENTED BY THE GREEN PORTION.

BASIC AID SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN CONTRAST FILL UP THE BUCKET AS MUCH AS THEY CAN UP TO THAT MINIMUM LEVEL OF FUNDING THAT THE STATE HAS IDENTIFIED, AND THEY ALSO GET TO KEEP THE EXCESS PROPERTY TAXES.

CUSD WHEN THEY TRANSITION TO A BASIC AID SCHOOL DISTRICT, WILL GET TO KEEP THE ADDITIONAL PROPERTY TAXES CURRENTLY ESTIMATED AT $8-$10 MILLION, ADDITIONAL ABOVE AND BEYOND THE LCFF.

UNDER A BASIC AID FUNDED SCHOOL DISTRICT, WE RECEIVE TWO PAYCHECKS FOR THE YEAR, ALIGNING WITH PROPERTY TAX COLLECTIONS HERE IN THE CITY.

TYPICALLY DECEMBER AND APRIL ARE WHEN A LARGE BULK OF THOSE COLLECTIONS HAPPEN.

TO YOUR POINT, THE DISTRICT IN ITS BP 3050, HAS INDICATED THAT WE NEED TO BUILD BACK OUR RESERVES AS FAST AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO MEET OUR CASH FLOW NEEDS.

WE HAVE TO MAKE PAYROLL PAYMENTS EVERY MONTH.

WE HAVE TO PAY OUR VENDORS EVERY MONTH.

WAITING SIX MONTHS TO GET A LARGE CHUNK OF CASH IS UNTENABLE.

WE HAVE TO HAVE RESERVES IN THE BANK, 17% IS TYPICALLY WHAT'S RECOMMENDED BY STATE OFFICIALS, AND THAT'S SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO FUND YOUR MONTHLY OBLIGATIONS AS THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

WE JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR HAVING US HERE AS WELL.

IT'S JUST LIKE AN AMAZING ARRAY OF TALENT IN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT, JUST TO BE ABLE TO SEE KIDS IN THE ROBOTICS PROGRAMS THAT WE EVALUATE AND THE MUSICIANS.

IT'S JUST A PLEASURE TO BE HERE, SO THANK YOU FOR THAT.

WE HAVE MULTIPLE GRANTS E^3 IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE LONGEST-RUNNING GRANTS THAT YOU HAVE SOME ITERATION OF IT.

IT IS A MATH GRANT, FOCUSED ON ALL KIDS IN K-3, BUT ALSO MILITARY-CONNECTED KIDS SPECIFICALLY.

MATH PROFICIENCY CONTINUES TO IMPROVE FOR MILITARY-CONNECTED KIDS IN GRADES 3-5.

GRADE 5 SAW THE STRONGEST GAINS, RISING TO 84% OF STUDENTS WHO ARE PROFICIENT IN MATH THIS YEAR.

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE 24, 25 SCHOOL YEARS.

WE'VE ALSO SPENT SOME TIME IN CLASSROOMS THIS PAST YEAR DOING LEARNING WALKS, WATCHING NUMBER CORNERS, JUST PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE WAY THAT TEACHERS ARE DELIVERING THE CURRICULUM AND HELPING KIDS BUILD THEIR NUMERACY SKILLS, ESPECIALLY IN THE EARLY GRADES.

IT GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY IN A LOW-RISK ENVIRONMENT TO BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT MATHEMATICS WITH EACH OTHER.

THEN, BASED ON A RECOMMENDATION FROM LAST YEAR, WE DID TAKE SOME TIME TO LOOK AT HOW STUDENTS WHO HAVE MULTIPLE YEARS, THREE YEARS OR MORE OF INSTRUCTION IN MATHEMATICS IN CORONADO, HOW THEY PERFORM COMPARED TO STUDENTS THAT ONLY GET A YEAR.

THERE IS AN ADDED BENEFIT OF MORE TIME IN THE DISTRICT WITH THE CURRICULUM AND WITH THE TEACHERS THAT CAME OUT IN OUR ANALYSIS.

I FEEL LIKE THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE WOULD WANT TO ENCOURAGE, IS MORE TIME HERE IN MATH, YOU'RE GOING TO GET BETTER RESULTS.

JUST GETTING TO THE TREND OVER TIME,

AS DR. BATTLE MENTIONED, I'VE ACTUALLY BEEN EVALUATING THIS GRANT SINCE 2008, SO IT'S BEEN ALMOST 17 YEARS NOW.

OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS OR SO, WE'VE HAD THE SAME MEASURE ON A COMMON CORE ALIGNED ASSESSMENT AND YOU CAN SEE THE RESULTS THERE FROM A STATE LEVEL, RESULTS FOR STATE-WIDE, WE'VE INCREASED ABOUT 4% OVER THIS TIME, FROM 2015-2025.

IN CORONADO, YOU CAN SEE FOR MILITARY-CONNECTED STUDENTS, WHAT THAT CHANGE HAS BEEN, 14% INCREASE OVER THAT SAME TIME PERIOD, AND FOR ALL STUDENTS, IT HAS BEEN A 6%.

MILITARY-CONNECTED KIDS HERE ARE GROWING THREE TIMES THE RATE OF WHAT OTHER KIDS AROUND THE STATE ARE.

I FEEL LIKE AGAIN, IN TERMS OF THE WORK THAT WE DO AND THE IMPACT THAT WE LOOK AT, THERE'S BEEN A TREMENDOUS CHANGE OVER THE TIME THAT YOU'VE HAD THESE GRANTS.

PROJECT SALE IS REALLY FOCUSED ON SCIENCE AND STEM.

YOU SAW IMPORTANT GAINS IN GRADES 5 AND 11 THERE, 72% OF KIDS AND 79% OF KIDS MEETING PROFICIENCY.

WE SAW THE ROBOTICS PROGRAM IN ACTION TONIGHT.

NOT MUCH NEEDS TO BE SAID ABOUT THAT.

YOU SAW WHAT THESE KIDS ARE DOING.

THERE'S A LOT OF IN GSS, THE NATIONAL SCIENCE STANDARDS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING THAT ARE GOING ON K-12, PLUS A LOT OF PARTNERSHIPS THAT ARE BEING DEVELOPED AROUND STEM CAREERS, PARTNERSHIPS, FIELD EXPERIENCES, THINGS THAT ALLOW US TO APPLY THE GRANT.

THEN WE JUST COMPLETED THE COMPUTER SCIENCE GRANT PLANNING YEAR.

THAT'S BASICALLY AN OPPORTUNITY THAT WE TAKE TO BUILD THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THINGS, ESPECIALLY ON THE DATA SIDE, THE EVALUATION SIDE, JUST LOOKING AT THE THINGS THAT ARE ACCOMPLISHED WITH THE GRANT, MEASURING THOSE THINGS OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

THERE'S PROFESSIONAL LEARNING HAS BEEN GOING ON RIGHT NOW THAT WERE DEVELOPED LAST YEAR.

THE PLAN WAS DEVELOPED AND PUT INTO PLACE AND TEACHERS ARE CORRECTED [INAUDIBLE] THERE'S EXPLORATIONS OF PARTNERSHIPS, INTERNSHIPS, ESPORTS, CS GUEST SPEAKERS, THINGS LIKE THAT ARE GOING TO BE VALID.

I'LL TURN IT OVER TO MY COLLEAGUE, KIRSTEN AND SHE'LL SPEAK TO THE WORLD LANGUAGE SIDE.

WE HAVE A REAL INCREASE THIS YEAR IN OUR MILITARY CONNECTED STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE CL ACHIEVING THE SL.

THAT'S 30% OF OUR ELIGIBLE THE 13% LAST YEAR, BUT 18% HUGE AND IT IS COMPARABLE TO OUR RATE FOR ALL STUDENTS ACROSS THE DISTRICT.

THE SIMILAR FOR THE NEXT POINT ABOUT THE MILITARY CONNECTED STUDENTS LANGUAGE PATHWAY.

THIS IS ALSO COMPARABLE TO ALL STUDENTS ACROSS THIS WAY 35% FACILITY, 9% INCREASE FROM LAST YEAR.

WE CONTINUE TO HAVE REALLY STRONG INTEREST IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS LANGUAGE PATHWAY, BUT INCREASE IN THEIR INTEREST IN CONTINUING LANGUAGE.

JUST WEREN'T SEEING AS MUCH LAST YEAR, AND WE'RE SEEING IT MORE THIS YEAR INCREASE IN THAT INTEREST, WHICH IS TO SEE THAT THOSE STUDENTS

WILL BE ENTERING INTO CURRENT LEVELS OF WORLD LANGUAGE STUDY IN HIGH SCHOOL.

THE HIGH SCHOOL LANGUAGE PARTICIPATION INCREASE ACTUALLY LAST YEAR SO 24/25, THAT WAS A CHANGE FROM SEASON MORE HIGH SCHOOLERS TOOK WORLD LANGUAGE CLASSES LAST YEAR.

PART OF THAT WAS THIS AP SPANISH ACCOUNT.

ALL OF THE DIFFERENT LEVELS, SPANISH FRENCH, SPANISH TWO HUGE BUMP THERE.

THEN LASTLY, I JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE ALL THE WORK THAT THE WORLD LANGUAGE.

THE SECONDARY FAMILY SPECIFICALLY ARE AWARE OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES, AND THEY ALSO HAVE A REALLY HIGH INTEREST LEVEL FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

FOR BOTH OF THOSE AROUND 84%.

BUT SEEING WHAT WE'RE GETTING, THESE GRANTS ARE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN PROBABLY $810 MILLION TOTAL, I THINK BETWEEN THE FOUR IS WE MIGHT HAVE ACTIVE RIGHT NOW.

IT'S GREAT TO SEE AND I'M SURE SHOW THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THAT THE MONEY IS WELL SPENT, THAT WE'VE CREATED THIS PATHWAY, AND OUR JOB NOW WILL BE TO MAINTAIN THIS WORLD LANGUAGE PLUS PATHWAY WITHOUT THE FEDERAL FUNDING.

I THINK PART OF IT IS THIS HOPE IN THIS PATHWAY, OF THE LONG GAME OF THIS WORLD LANGUAGE PATHWAY THAT'S NOW AVAILABLE ALSO IN THE CONSISTENT FOCUS.

I TRUST THE COMMUNITY AND THE BOARD HAVE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW MY REPORT.

I WILL JUST PROVIDE A VERY BRIEF SUMMARY.

AT OUR LAST BOARD MEETING, TRUSTEES ASKED FOR A LIST OR INITIATIVES THAT WOULD ADDRESS A SAFETY RESET WITH OUR STUDENTS AND A DISCIPLINE RESET.

I REACHED OUT TO OUR FOUR ADMINISTRATORS AT OUR CABINET MEETING AND ASKED THEM TO PROVIDE ME WITH STRATEGIES THAT THEY WOULD USE WITH THEIR STUDENTS IN JANUARY TO RESET POST-WINTER BREAK.

WHAT YOU SEE BEFORE YOU IS A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF THOSE INITIATIVES.

AS YOU SEE BY GRADE LEVEL, THERE ARE VARYING APPROACHES TO THIS, BUT A LOT OF ALIGNMENT AND REINFORCEMENT OF THE DISCIPLINE ACTION GUIDE.

BECAUSE IT'S SOMEWHAT TIED TO THIS REPORT, WE MENTIONED AT OUR LAST OR WE DISCUSSED AT OUR LAST BOARD MEETING OUR EXISTING CELL PHONE POLICY AND BETWEEN OUR NOVEMBER BOARD MEETING AND TODAY, I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE VILLAGE PTO MEETING, AND THAT WAS A TOPIC OF DISCUSSION.

I'VE ALSO HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO DISCUSS EXISTING CELL PHONE POLICY WITH OUR SUPERINTENDENT STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL MEMBERS AND HAVE MET WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM YONDR ON TWO OCCASIONS.

MS. MAGELEKA AND I ARE GOING TO SEND AN INVITATION TO A SMALL GROUP OF PARENTS WHO HAVE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN JOINING A LITTLE SUBCOMMITTEE TO DISCUSS A PARENT FORUM.

WE ARE PLANNING A PARENT FORUM TO DISCUSS OUR EXISTING CELL PHONE POLICY AND POTENTIAL CHANGES WITH PARENTS, AND CURRENTLY WE'RE TARGETING A LATE JANUARY EARLY FEBRUARY TIMELINE FOR THAT FORUM.

AS DISCUSSED AT OUR LAST MEETING, IT IS OUR GOAL TO BRING FORWARD TO THE GOVERNING BOARD A REVISED BOARD POLICY FOR IMPLEMENTATION IN FALL OF 26.

THIS IS SOMETHING, AS YOU'RE ALL AWARE, AND I'LL MENTION DURING MY SUPERINTENDENT COMMENTS, WE HAVE MADE A REAL CONCERTED EFFORT TO REACH OUT TO OUR CONSTITUENTS.

I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY PRIOR TO THANKSGIVING BREAK TO TRAVEL TO ALL FOUR SCHOOL SITES AND HOST WHAT I'M CALLING AN AMA TOUR, ASK ME ANYTHING, AND FIELDED A LOT OF QUESTIONS FROM OUR STAFF.

THIS WAS A TOPIC OF DISCUSSION IN THAT SETTING, AND AFTER THE VILLAGE PTO MEETING FELT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE WILL BEGIN ENGAGING IN DIALOGUE WITH MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY WHENEVER AND WHEREVER POSSIBLE.

VERY POSITIVE AND ENCOURAGING AS FAR AS SUPPORT TO TAKE A CRITICAL LOOK AT THIS ISSUE, BUT SOME STRONG OPINIONS ON BOTH SIDES.

I THINK HAVING A COMMUNITY FORUM TO DISCUSS THIS TOPIC WILL BE HELPFUL FOR US PRIOR TO BRINGING INFORMATION BACK TO THE GOVERNING BOARD.

AGAIN, I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE TIMELINE IS TOO AMBITIOUS FOR US TO DEVELOP A NEW POLICY ROLLING FORWARD FOR SCHOOL YEAR 26/27.

THIS YEAR, WHEN WE STARTED TO GET ON OUR FIELDS, WE HAD A PRACTICE.

IT WAS ABOUT 45 MINUTES LONG.

WE GOT OUT THERE, 45 MINUTES IS A VERY SHORT PRACTICE, BUT THAT WAS ALL THAT WAS AVAILABLE.

WE WENT TO PRACTICE, AND THEN WE FOUND OUT THAT THE REASON WE'RE SO LIMITED IN OUR TIME IS

BECAUSE A FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATION HAD TAKEN UP OUR TIME ON THAT THURSDAY.

MAJORITY OF OUR TIME HAS BEEN TAKING UP ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS, TAKING BOTH FIELDS FOR OUR PROGRAM ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS, AND THAT HAS FORCED US TO HAVE LIMITED PLAY TIME TO EITHER PRACTICE AT 6:00 AM.

IT IS A CONTACT SPORT, SO WE HAVE TO HAVE SOME THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO GET DONE.

FORTUNATELY WE HAVE LOTS OF GOOD PEOPLE TO HELP US, BUT THAT IS NOT IDEAL.

THE CLASS IS DESIGNED TO REMEDIATE ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH.

OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A PROBLEM.

IT UNDERSCORES MANY ISSUES WITH THE EDUCATION, K THROUGH 12 IN CALIFORNIA AND THE LACK OF STANDARDIZED TESTING AS AN ADMISSION REQUIREMENT TO A COLLEGE.

THERE ARE MANY ISSUES WITH IT, BUT I FOR ONE, WOULD SAY THAT THIS IS AN INEVITABLE CONSEQUENCE OF NOT REQUIRING TESTING OR AT LEAST TESTING THAT MATTERS.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW, THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AND CAL STATE DO NOT REQUIRE STANDARDIZED TESTING, AND THEY ACTUALLY WILL SAY ON THEIR APPLICATION THAT IT'S NOT EVEN OPTIONAL TO SEND IT IN.

I DO HOPE THAT THESE SCHOOL SYSTEMS WILL TAKE THIS AND OTHER INFORMATION INTO CONSIDERATION AND PROBABLY REVISE THEIR ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND REQUIRE AT LEAST THE SUBMISSION AND CONSIDERATION OF STANDARDIZED TESTING BECAUSE IT'S NOT FAIR TO THESE KIDS AND THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS FROM WHERE THEY COME FROM TO BE PUT IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT.
