FOR MANY, MANY YEARS, WHEN I WAS IN THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF LEARNING, WE CREATED AN MOU IN THE 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR WITH CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION, ESPECIALLY FOR THIRD GRADE, BECAUSE THERE'S NO TEXTBOOK BIG ENOUGH IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO PROVIDE LOCAL HISTORY. SO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA REALLY RELIES ON HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS ACROSS THE STATE TO BRING THIRD GRADERS THEIR LOCAL HISTORY, WHICH IS WHAT WE DO, AND WE LOVE IT. SO SALLY'S GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT OUR HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP AND SOMETHING ABOUT COSETTE, AND THEN I'LL WRAP IT UP REAL QUICK ABOUT THE THIRD GRADE PROGRAM.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT THIS EVENING.
I WILL ATTEMPT TO MAKE THIS BRIEF. BUT REALLY, I WANTED TO TELL A LITTLE STORY ABOUT WHERE WE'RE AT TODAY, THE CURRENT STATE OF THE DISTRICT. AND IT CENTERS AROUND A GOAL AND A COMMITMENT THAT WE'VE MADE TO THE STUDENTS IN THIS COMMUNITY FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS.
FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS, WE'VE BEEN DISCUSSING BUILDING THE BRIDGE TO BASIC AID, AND THAT WE NEED TO CREATE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO BECOME WHEN WE REACH BASIC AID, BEFORE WE REACH BASIC AID. CONVERSATIONS THAT I'VE HAD WITH MY SON'S CONVERSATIONS THAT WE HAVE AS EDUCATORS ABOUT OUR STUDENTS IS POSITIONING OUR STUDENTS FOR OPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES WHEN THEY REACH 13TH GRADE.
WHEN THEY WALK ACROSS 650 D AVENUE. THE STAGE AT GRADUATION.
DO THEY HAVE OPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO PURSUE INTERESTS AND PASSIONS EITHER IN POST-SECONDARY, THE JOB FORCE, TRAVEL, WHATEVER IT MAY BE? HOW ARE WE PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO HAVE THOSE OPTIONS AND THOSE OPPORTUNITIES? SO IT'S WITH THAT IN MIND THAT I SHARE THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT.
WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO POSITION OURSELVES THROUGH CREATING THE CONDITIONS WITHIN CUSD PRIOR TO REACHING BASIC AID FOR OUR KIDS TO HAVE OPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES WHEN THEY GRADUATE. I'M GOING TO START WITH WHO WE ARE TODAY.
YOU'LL SEE THE DEMOGRAPHICS LISTED UP HERE. WE SERVE APPROXIMATELY 2700 STUDENTS AGE 2 TO 22.
AND YOU CAN SEE THE DEMOGRAPHICS THAT WE CURRENTLY SERVE ABOVE.
WHERE DO WE RANK? WE'RE VERY PROUD OF OUR STUDENTS ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
AS WE'VE SHARED, WE HAVE ONE OF THE HIGHEST GRADUATION RATES IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY.
AND WHEN WE COMPARE OURSELVES IN STATE STANDARDIZED TESTING TO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTS, WE RANK NUMBER ONE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, NUMBER 2 IN SCIENCE, BUT IN A HUGE UPTICK, EIGHT PERCENTAGE POINTS THIS PAST YEAR, AND NUMBER TWO IN MATH.
OUR FUNDING MODEL IS GOING TO SHIFT. WE'VE MET THE OBJECTIVE AND WE ARE NOW READY TO MOVE FORWARD WITH SOME THINGS THAT WE HAVE PLANNED, SOME THINGS THAT WE HAVE CREATED AS FAR AS VISION DOCUMENTS THAT I WILL GET INTO IN A FEW MOMENTS.
BUT I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING FOR ALL OF US TO JUST TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND ACKNOWLEDGE.
WE'VE BEEN BUILDING THE STRUCTURES AND SUPPORTS FOR OUR KIDDOS ALL ALONG, AND NOW THAT WE'VE REACHED BASIC AID, WE HAVE OPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN FRONT OF US THAT THE FIVE OF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO CONSIDER OVER THE NEXT 16 MONTHS.
I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE BRIDGE.

WHEN SOMEONE CROSSES OVER A BRIDGE, THEY'RE TRANSFORMING OR TRANSITIONING INTO NEW OPPORTUNITIES, NEW POTENTIAL, NEW EXPLORATION. OKAY. THAT'S WHERE WE'RE AT TODAY.

WE'VE APPLIED FOR DODEA GRANTS TO HELP CREATE PROGRAMS FOR OUR STUDENTS THAT WE COULDN'T AFFORD, BUT WE KNEW OUR COMMUNITY WAS INTERESTED IN FOR THEIR STUDENTS.
I USED THE WORD HUSTLE EARLIER, AND I THINK THAT THAT'S AN IMPORTANT ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO OUR STAFF.
WE HAVE TEACHERS, CLASSIFIED STAFF, ADMINISTRATORS, DIRECTORS WHO HAVE DEVOTED HUNDREDS OF HOURS TO WRITE GRANTS TO POSITION OUR DISTRICT, TO OFFER EXPERIENCES TO OUR STUDENTS THAT, QUITE FRANKLY, WE COULDN'T AFFORD.
IN 2024, WE ADOPTED THE PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE THAT WAS OUR OUR OUR FINAL ADOPTION.
AND IN 2025 THE BOARD ADOPTED BP3051. I'M GOING TO GET TO BOTH OF THOSE DOCUMENTS IN A MOMENT.

OUR DODEA GRANTS HAVE PROVIDED AND AFFORDED US OPPORTUNITIES TO MOVE FORWARD AND START ADDING TO OUR COURSE OF STUDY IN AREAS THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE IDENTIFIED AS AREAS OF INTEREST OR INDUSTRY HAS TOLD US THESE ARE THE SKILLS AND THESE ARE THE EXPERIENCES WE WANT YOUR STUDENTS TO HAVE BEFORE THEY GRADUATE FROM OUR DISTRICT. WORLD LANGUAGE.
NOW THAT WE'VE CROSSED THE BRIDGE TO BASIC AID, WHAT ARE SOME OF THOSE NEXT STEPS? WHAT IS THE POTENTIAL TO GROW? ONE OF OUR CHARACTERISTICS IN OUR PORTRAITS.

THE WYLAND FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP HAS AFFORDED OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TO GO INTO A WORKING LAB AND TO LEARN ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES THAT IMPACT US HERE REGIONALLY.
WE'VE DONE SOME VERTICAL ALIGNMENT OF SCIENCE STANDARDS THROUGH OUR PROJECT SAIL-DODEA GRANT.
WE HAVE OUR EMERALD KEEPERS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, AND WE HAVE CLUBS AT CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL.
UNFORTUNATELY, OUR STOP THE SEWAGE CLUB COULDN'T BE HERE THIS EVENING.

AND THAT WAS ALL INTENTIONAL. WHERE CAN WE GO WITH THAT? WE HAVE STUDENTS BEHIND THE CAMERA AND IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA THROUGH KCMS. WE ARE STARTING TO SCRATCH THE SURFACE ON WHAT IS POSSIBLE WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN OUR DISTRICT.
BUT WE HAVE OPPORTUNITIES. WHAT ARE SOME NEXT STEPS AS WE CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO? WHAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE. WE'VE ALREADY STARTED, WE'VE TASKED STAFF WITH DEVELOPING A FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR A LANGUAGE IMMERSION COHORT IN OUR DISTRICT. WE'RE BEING RESPONSIVE TO OUR COMMUNITY VOICE, AND WE'RE BEING RESPONSIVE TO THE SKILLS AND THE EXPERIENCES THAT OUR STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE OPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES WHEN THEY GRADUATE FROM CUSD.
AGAIN, IT'S A VERY EXCITING TIME TO BE IN OUR DISTRICT.
WHAT ARE SOME CRUCIAL ELEMENTS. I MENTIONED EARLIER, THE BLUEPRINT THAT WE HAVE, THE STRATEGIC VISIONING DOCUMENT IN OUR THREE PORTRAITS, BP3050, THAT YOU GUYS CREATED AND PROVIDED TO US, GIVES US THE FINANCIAL PRIORITIES SETTING THAT WE NEEDED.
NOW THAT WE'RE IN BASIC AID, HOW ARE WE GOING TO PRIORITIZE SOME OF THE COMPETING INTERESTS THAT ARE OUT THERE? WE KNOW, BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN DISCUSSING BASIC AID IN THIS COMMUNITY FOR OVER 20 YEARS, THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF PLANS.
EVERYONE HAS AN IDEA OF WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING AND HOW WE SHOULD BE DOING IT.

WE'VE HAD A A DREAM TO LOWER OUR CLASS SIZES, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE SOME DIFFICULT DECISIONS ABOUT INTER-DISTRICT TRANSFERS, AND THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IN THE NEXT 16 MONTHS.

WE BELIEVE IN EDUCATING OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS.
UNFORTUNATELY, FUNDING FOR TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN WON'T BE MADE AVAILABLE THROUGH BASIC AID.
OTHER POSSIBILITIES TO CONSIDER. WHAT ARE SOME OF THOSE COMMUNITY INTEREST ITEMS THAT WE'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT FOR A DECADE? SOLAR PANELS. IN-HOUSE TRANSPORTATION. BRINGING BUSSES BACK TO CUSD.
HVAC SYSTEMS, WHICH WILL REQUIRE EXTENSIVE WORK ON OUR EXISTING FACILITIES.
WHAT WILL THAT LOOK LIKE? WHAT COULD THAT LOOK LIKE? AND WILL WE ALLOCATE OR PRIORITIZE RESOURCES IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE BECOMING A DUAL IMMERSION OR ESTABLISHING A DUAL IMMERSION PATHWAY.

THE HEAT'S ON. OKAY. BUT SINCE WE CAN'T TURN THE SYSTEMS OFF ANYMORE LIKE WE USED TO ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY, WE HAVE DOORS AND WINDOWS OPEN IN ROOMS WHERE THE AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING IS RUNNING FULL FORCE, YOU CAN FEEL IT COMING OUT OF THE VENTS. IT'S BECAUSE THEY CAN'T TURN THE HEAT OFF IN THEIR ROOM.

THE CULTURE ON OUR CAMPUS IS REALLY POSITIVE THIS YEAR.
THIS IS A GREAT GROUP OF STUDENTS. THEY'RE KIND, POLITE, AND FUNNY, BUT THEY'RE ALSO KIDS, MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS. WE HAVE A LOT OF PROGRAMS IN PLACE TO EDUCATE KIDS, POSITIVELY REINFORCE THEM, BUT THE REALITY IS THAT WE HAVE LITTLE HUMANS IN BIGGISH BODIES WHO ARE GOING THROUGH HORMONAL CHANGES THEY HAVE THEIR OWN MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS. THEY HAVE A FRONTAL LOBE THAT IS STILL DEVELOPING, AND KIDS JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHO THEY ARE NOW.
DO THEY MAKE MISTAKES? DO THEY SAY INAPPROPRIATE THINGS?

SO I'M HERE TO TALK ABOUT THEM TODAY.ARE THERE KIDS WHO HAVE ENGAGED IN BULLYING BEHAVIORS? YES. LIKE IN EVERY SCHOOL. I WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO REMIND OUR COMMUNITY THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RUDE BEHAVIOR, MEAN BEHAVIOR, AND BULLYING BEHAVIOR. BUT WE'RE FINDING THAT THE WORD BULLY IS BEING USED ALL TOO FREQUENTLY.
IT'S BEING USED FOR EVERY RUDE REMARK OR EVERY MEAN GESTURE THAT OCCURS.
BELIEVE ME, OUR STUDENTS ARE ALSO AWARE OF THE PERCEPTION THAT'S OUT THERE.
SO I WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO SHOUT OUT MY SIXTH, SEVENTH, AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS BECAUSE THEY ARE RESILIENT, BRILLIANT AND AMAZING HUMANS. THIS CURRENT EIGHTH GRADE CLASS IS ONE OF THE KINDEST, AND YOU DON'T USE THE WORD KIND WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL OFTEN.

I HAVE A FRIEND I GREW UP WITH AND WENT TO SCHOOL WITH.
